Ewashko Singers celebrate Christmas with a Twist, featuring Jonathan Estabrooks

The renowned Ewashko Singers mark the holiday season with a Saturday, December 15 benefit
concert that celebrates the glorious music of Christmas. They have prepared an eclectic selection of
songs designed to lift your spirits. Special guest artist and rising star Jonathan Estabrooks comes
home to Ottawa to join the choir and jazz specialists The Pollcats in presenting holiday favourites
from the repertoire of Bing Crosby.
Come in from the cold for an evening of warm feelings and good cheer. The program includes
original works by John Rutter and the hilarious PDQ Bach, traditional French, Austrian and
Ukrainian carols, innovative arrangements of Christmas classics, and a tribute to that most seasonal
of desserts—the fruitcake! Christmas with a Twist is a benefit concert for the youth choral program
at the First Unitarian Congregation.
Celebrate the season on Saturday, December 15, 2012, at 8 p.m. at the First Unitarian
Congregation, 30 Cleary Avenue, Ottawa. Tickets are $25 in advance at The Leading Note
(370 Elgin) or from choir members, or $30 at the door (students and seniors: $20 in advance or
$25 at the door; children under 12 free).
Ewashko Singers: Initially a select group chosen for a live-to-air broadcast celebrating the
50th anniversary of Radio Canada International, the Ewashko Singers have developed into a flexible
vocal ensemble with a core group of 24 singers. Whether singing Rachmaninoff a cappella or Bach
with an orchestra, they skillfully perform a broad range of music.
Jonathan Estabrooks: Hailed by the New York Times as “a robust baritone,” and winner of the
prestigious 35th Oratorio Society of New York Vocal Competition, Ottawa-born baritone
Jonathan Estabrooks continues to make a unique and rich contribution to the performing arts world.
A graduate of The Juilliard School in New York City, he has appeared in recital, concert and opera
in Canada, the United States and abroad.
The Pollcats: Well-known jazz clarinetist Scott Poll and his band The Pollcats will perform holiday
jazz classics and provide swinging accompaniment for the choir and soloists. Considered one of
Ottawa’s finest acoustic jazz groups, The Pollcats deliver some of the most exciting and memorable
songs from the 1930s and 1940s.

Pour vous mettre dans l’esprit du temps des fêtes, les illustres Ewashko Singers vous présentent
une sélection éclectique de musique de Noël dans le cadre d’un concert-bénéfice le samedi
15 décembre. L’étoile montante d’origine ottavienne Jonathan Estabrooks rentre au bercail le
temps de se joindre au chœur et au groupe jazz The Pollcats afin d’interpréter quelques succès
tirés du répertoire de Bing Crosby.
Un Noël jazzé soulignera la période festive grâce à son programme composé de pièces originales
de John Rutter et du très drôle PDQ Bach; de chants traditionnels français, autrichiens et
ukrainiens; d’arrangements innovateurs d’airs connus de Noël; et d’un hommage au dessert
saisonnier par excellence—le gâteau aux fruits! Les profits du spectacle seront versés au
programme de chant choral des jeunes de l’église First Unitarian.

Les Ewashko Singers : Issus d’un groupe de chanteurs triés sur le volet à l’occasion d’une
émission en direct célébrant les 50 ans de Radio-Canada International, les Ewashko Singers sont
aujourd’hui un ensemble vocal polyvalent comptant un noyau principal de 24 chanteurs. Le groupe

Jonathan Estabrooks : « Baryton à la voix robuste » acclamé par le New York Times, ce diplômé
de l’École Juilliard a remporté la 35e édition du concours de chant de l’Oratorio Society of New York.
Originaire d’Ottawa, M. Estabrooks continue de se démarquer brillamment sur la scène des arts en
se produisant dans des récitals, des concerts et des opéras, tant au Canada qu’à l’étranger.
Les Pollcats : En plus d’appuyer le chœur et les solistes d’un accompagnement rythmé, le
clarinettiste jazz de renommée Scott Poll et son ensemble joueront des standards jazz de Noël. Un
des meilleurs ensembles jazz acoustique d’Ottawa, The Pollcats se spécialisent dans le répertoire
remarquable des années 1930 et 1940.
