Les Planètes Phoniques Lesson 9 : the ‘ai’ sound Links to the KS3 Framework (2009 version) : 1.1 Understanding and responding to the spoken word Identify gist and some detail in face-to-face exchanges, spoken passages, stories and songs. 1.5 Presenting and narrating ii. Activity Teaching sequence Starter activity Ask the pupils if they can think of any French words that have the ‘ai’ sound in. Try to draw out words such as j’ai, le café, dansez, le nez, janvier. Write the words on the board and underline the ‘ai’ part of the word. Resource: Planète ‘ai’ Powerpoint slide 1 Listen to the correct pronunciation of some words with the ‘ai’ sound in Show slide 2 and explain that today we are going to visit ‘la Planète ai’. Show slide 3 and look at some words with the ‘ai’ sound in, and listen to the correct pronunciation. Resource: Planète ‘ai’ Powerpoint slides 2 and 3 Les Planètes Phoniques Activity Teaching sequence Listening activity Ask pupils to practise making the ‘ai’ sound. Ask the pupils to listen to the following rhyme. They should do a tally of the number of times they hear the sound. Trois petits moustiques Trois petits moustiques m'ont piqué Un sur le front Un sur le nez et le troisième au bout du pied Trois petits boutons m'ont poussé Un sur le front Un sur le nez et le troisième au bout du pied Me voilà tout défiguré, c'est l'été... Ask the pupils how many times they heard the ‘ai’ sound. Now show the next slide with the written words as well as the sound and ask the pupils to check if they were correct (the correct answer is 12) Resource: Planète ‘ai’ Powerpoint slides 4 and 5 Speaking practice Pupils read and listen to the well-known song ‘Le fermier dans son pré’ (‘the Farmer’s in his den’) and practise singing it in pairs. This would be a good opportunity to record pupils speaking or video them, and play the recordings back for self and peer assessment (two stars and a wish). Only one of the words has the ‘ai’ sound in. Is it the first or second? Pupils can vote.
