musiciens!

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2009
Specialized Courses:
Soirée Lecture et Conversation: Come explore two of the greatest 20th century French philosophers: JeanPaul Sartre and Albert Camus. Camus, a French philosopher and journalist, won the Nobel Prize for Literature.
Sartre, known as a great philosopher and existentialist, was awarded the same honor, but refused to accept it. In
this course, you will study Sartre’s Le Mur, composed of 5 short stories that make up one of his most famous fictional existentialist works. Camus’ L’étranger, considered one of the most famous novels of the 20th century,
deals with the absurdity of human existence. Class materials: Sartre, Jean-Paul, Le Mur. Camus, Albert, L’étranger., Amazon.com, ISBN 2-07-036002-4 (preferred) or internet download
www.macobo.com/essays/epdf/CAMUS,%20Albert%20-%20The%20Stranger.pdf
Soirée Théâtre: The supreme French master of the farce of “Paris à La Belle Epoque” is back at the Alliance
Française with “Le Dindon” (“An Absolute Turkey”)! This hysterical vaudeville of Georges Feydeau refers to a
fellow named Pontagnac who spends his time romancing wives of others.
Practice your French through the most ludicrous situations; misunderstandings, intrigues, revenge plots, mistaken
identity and ever slamming doors! A must for theatre fans of today’s Paris stage! A must in your life as a student
of French!
Class materials: The text will be photocopied, and sold to you at a reasonable cost at your first class.
Cours Politique: This course offers advanced students an opportunity to discuss foreign policy issues that are
part and parcel of the current news in France, in the United States of America, and around the world. The starting
point of our open discussions will be GREAT DECISIONS 2008, a top notch nonpartisan publication made up of
articles authored by eminent foreign policy experts. Join us for these musings on issues such as Europe, Terrorism, US Defense policy, Philanthropy, and many other global issues. We will emerge from this course with a
heightened awareness, a better understanding, a well-informed opinion on global issues, and a well-honed speaking ability in French..
