They are studied in the context of French and the French speaking world, but you will be expected to use your own knowledge and experience to develop your understanding and opinions of these topics. Evolution du cinéma – les grandes lignes In addition to the core content you will study one film by a French director. Assessment AS Paper 1: Listening, Reading and Writing 45% of AS. 1 hour 45 minutes written examination of 90 marks What’s assessed? Aspects of French-speaking society: current trends Artistic culture in the French-speaking world Grammar Listening Section Students listen and respond to spoken passages from a range of contexts. Students respond to questions requiring short target-language or nonverbal responses. (35 marks) Reading Section Students read and respond to a variety of texts written for different purposes. Students respond to questions requiring short target-language or non-verbal responses. (45 marks) Writing Section Students will complete a translation into English of a passage of a minimum of 70 words. No access to a dictionary. (10 marks) Paper 2: Writing 25% of AS. 1 hour 30 minutes written examination of 50 marks What’s assessed? A written response to a question about the film studied at AS Level. Grammar Translation Section Students will complete a translation into French (minimum of 70 words) with no access to a dictionary. (15 marks) Essay Section Students will write one essay in French of approximately 250 words in response to a question about the film studied at AS Level. There will be a choice of two questions. No access to a dictionary is permitted. Paper 3: Speaking 30% of AS, 30 minutes speaking test (including 15 minutes preparation) 60 marks What’s assessed? One sub-theme from Aspects of French-speaking society: current trends. One sub-theme from Artistic culture in the French-speaking world. Assessment Candidates have 15 minutes supervised preparation time during which they should prepare the two cards given to them by the examiner. The cards will be based on the two core topics prescribed for AS. There will be questions printed on each card and candidates are also expected to respond to broader issues within the sub-topic area prescribed on the card. During the exam students will spend an equal amount of time (6-7 minutes) discussing each sub-theme. All tests will be marked by an AQA examiner. Aim to learn the list of irregulars. In addition to the above, we expect you to be mature and independent learners, therefore all of the below will also benefit your start to the course: Revise carefully all the vocabulary and grammar requirements for GCSE Higher Level. Keep building your vocabulary! Practise applying previously learned structures and vocabulary in new situations.
