Course description
Thiscourseisthefourthofafour-semesterintroductiontotheFrenchlanguageandtheFrancophoneculturesofthe
world.Itisdesignedtohelpstudents improvetheirknowledgeandunderstandingofFranceandfrancophonecultures
aswellascommunicationskillsinFrench,emphasizing:speaking,listening, reading,andwriting.

Since this is an online course, you will be responsible for a considerable amount of work outside of class. You are

MyFrenchLab (MFL)
TheMFLexercisesareintendedtoprepareyoufortheday’slessoninadvance,toenableyoutoparticipateinclassdiscussion
and activities, and to reinforce yourunderstanding and masteryof the vocabularyandstructures in each chapter. Youare
expectedtokeepupwiththeMFLonadailybasis.Assignmentsare dueatthestartofclassandtherewillbenograceperiod
formissedassignmentsunlessyouhaveprovidedyourinstructorwithdocumentationforanexcused absence.
HowtodohomeworkinMFL:IntheMFLplatform,youhaveanunlimitednumberofattemptstosubmitanexerciseor

Written work and Turnitin
TherearetwotypesofwritingexercisesinF250.Thefirsttypeconsistsinwritingformalcompositions.Youwillchooseatopic
fromthoseprovidedinthebookandwriteacompositionofabout350word(+/-10%).Pleaseindicatethetopicyouhavechosen.
Thesecondtypeofwritingpracticeinvolvesreadingtextsandpreparingyouranswersfordiscussionquestionssothatyoucan
contributetoinclassdiscussions ( “discussionquestions”)tothebestofyourabilities.Aftersubmittingyouranswers,you
willhaveoneweektorecordanonlinediscussioningroupsofthree,respondingtoafewspecificquestions.Foreachquestion,
eachstudentwillcontributewithaninitialresponse,theremainingtwostudentswillthenkeeptheconversationgoing,expressing

Culture presentations
EachstudentwillchoosefromalistoftopicsONEculturalpresentationtopresentinclass.Thegoalofthepresentationsis
toprovideculturalbackground/more detailedinformationtoyourcolleaguesontopicsrelatedtoin-classliteraryand
culturalreadings.PresentationswillbeinFrench,shouldincludevisuals,beengagingandinformative,andshouldlast
between5-7minutes.IncludeaPPTandrecordyourvoiceoverthePPTwhileyouarepresenting.Youmayusetheinternetto
findyourinformation,butyoumustproperlyciteallyour sources!Choosefromthetopicsavailableonthelastpageofthe
syllabus.
YoucanfindanexplanationsheetabouthowtorecordyourvoiceoveraPowerPointpresentationonCanvas,aswellas
furtherelaborationontheassignment.
Chapter exams and final exam
ThechapterexamsaredesignedtoevaluateyourprogressinFrenchintheareasoflistening,reading,writing,speaking,and
culturalknowledge.Theytestwillbecumulativeandtakeplaceduringourlastonlinesession.
Class participation and preparation
Beforeeachclassperiod,itisimportantthatyoustudythematerialassignedforthatday(vocabulary,structures,readings)and
completetheassignedexercises. SpeakingFrenchregularlyisessentialforimprovingyourproficiency,andyoushouldcome
toclasspreparedtospeakandusethevocabularyandstructuresfor theday.Moststudentsfeelnervousorshyspeakinga
foreignlanguage;regularparticipationinclasswillhelpyoubecomemorecomfortablespeakingFrenchand willhelpyou
progressasquicklyaspossibleinthelanguage.Donotworryaboutmakingmistakes–makingmistakesisanormalpartofthe
learningprocess!We willfocusmoreonthemessageyouaretryingtocommunicatethanonanygrammaticalmistakesyou
makewhiletalking.
Youareexpectedtolonginontimeandtoremainconnectedandattentiveuntiltheinstructorendstheclass. Lateconnections
totheclassonlineandearlydisconnectionsfromAdobeConnectwillresultinalowerparticipationscorefortheweek.You
arealsoexpectedtorefrainfromeating,textingonyourcell phone,andindulginginanyothertypeofdisruptivebehavior
(chatting,exploringtheweb,doingyourhomework,etc.),allofwhichmayimpactyourweeklyparticipationgrade.
Amaximumparticipationscoreof10pointscanbeearnedperweekofclass.Yourinstructorwillassignaparticipationgrade

Tardiness and absence

documentationwhenrequired,andtakingtheinitiativeinhandinginormakingupworkinatimelymanner.
Arriving late or leaving early to online sessions
Tardinessaswellasearlydeparturescountagainstoverallparticipation.Threelatearrivalsorearlydepartureswillbe
countedasoneabsence.
Missing class
Ifyoumissclass,youarestillresponsibleforallworkdueonthatday.Youshouldinformyourinstructorofyourabsence
andstillsubmityourhomeworkviaMyFrenchLab.Shouldyoumissanytestforavalid,documentedreason,youwillhave
exactly24hourstocontacttheinstructorandpresentwritten,verifiableproofofanurgentreason.Outoffairnesstoall

Making up work
Ifyourabsenceisexcused,youmaymakeupparticipationpoints,homework,orexams.Examsshouldbemadeupwithina
weekifpossible.Participationpointsmaynotbemadeupforunexcusedabsences.
Excusing an absence
Excusableabsencesincludeillness,tragedy,religiousobservance,participationonateaminuniversity-sponsoredathletic

(except for compositions) must be submitted by Monday and/or Wednesday at 11:59pm.
Note: For the first week only, there will be a grace period. You can submit your MFL homework
by Tuesday, August 30th, midnight, since our first meeting is only Thursday. However, starting
with week 2, please submit the HW as per the deadlines you see on the syllabus and MFL calendar,
since late submissions will not be accepted.
