Early in July, Sanko Steamship filed for Chapter 15 title 11 bankruptcy protection in a last-ditch effort to restructure its USD $1 billion debts. This is the second time in recent
years that the company has been close to the financial precipice. In the early 1980s the company tried to benefit from low shipbuilding costs and ordered over 125 bulk
carriers with the assistance of finance from foreign trading concerns. This spelt disaster and the company was declared bankrupt with debts of over £3 billion. With assistance
from the Japanese government the company eventually managed to recover and in April 2012 was reported to control a fleet of some 185 vessels of which only about 20%
were actually owned. With a collapse of freight rates, the company now has to face paying high charter rates in an increasingly fragile market. The chances of survival this
time must be slim and the demise of the green hulls of a company founded in 1934 seems likely. One of their owned vessels, SANKO SINCERE is pictured leaving Hamburg

LES DALTON
It is with deep regret that we have to inform you of the death of long-standing
Society member Les Dalton, who passed away at home on 6th June 2012.
Les actually started his involvement with the West Midlands Branch ca 1960.
Les then moved down to Gloucestershire and was a co-founder of
Gloucester branch and was an active committee member. A survivor of the
sinking of HMS Eagle in 1942, Les has given his medium-format slide shows
to many Branches and acted as an ambassador for the Society with many
other local interest groups
WORLD SHIP SOCIETY 2013 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
The 2013 Annual General Meeting will be hosted by the Medway Branch and will
be held over the weekend of 17/18/19 May 2013. Further details will be issued
later.

REPORT ON 65TH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING AT HELD AT THE
LIFEBOAT COLLEGE POOLE ON 12TH MAY 2012
After being welcomed by, Mike Giles, the Dorset Branch Chairman, Jimmy Poole
thanked the Branch and its hard working team for organising the 65th AGM.
Apologies were received from Bill Mayes, Glenn Smith, Hans Mornout, John
English, Tony Atkinson, Stephen Hacker, Philip Simons and Dr Ian Buxton.
Chairman’s Report Richard Osborne thanked the Dorset Branch for hosting
the AGM and went on to thank Jimmy Poole (Hon Secretary), Bill Mayes
(Treasurer), Harry Spong (retiring Vice-Chairman), Glenn Smith
(Webmaster/Overseas Liaison), John English and the Publications team, Jim
McFaul and the WSPL team, Stephen Hacker and the Naval Committee, Roy
Fenton and the Merchant Ship Committee, Oliver Sesemann (Overseas
Liaison/German Branch), Hans Mornout (Dutch Branches/Council Member),
Tony Atkinson (Council Member – “Marine News”), Mervyn Park (Overseas
Membership Secretary), the “Marine News” team (Harold Appleyard, Kevin
O’Donoghue, Tony Atkinson, Peter Wynne and all contributing researchers,
authors & photographers), the “Warships“ team (Tom Adams, Brian Hargreaves
& all contributors), the “Chatham Team“ (Ian Wells, Alan Watt, Sheila Watt, Mick
Reynolds, Mike Jackson, Ken Flack, Ken Humble et al.), the Branch Cluster
Liaison Officers (Roland Waite, Jim Charnock, Maurice Napier, Krispen
Atkinson), all Branch Officers and all who provide a service to the membership
for their hard work on behalf of the membership.
The Chairman’s report focussed on “Marine News” which he described as the
“glue” that holds the Society together with its mix of news and research-driven
articles which continues to develop. After outlining the work done by the “Marine
News team”, he observed that strength can also become a weakness if societal
changes are ignored. For example, although the Society still had more than
2,400 members worldwide, a survey undertaken during 2010 – 2011 had
revealed that the average age of members was at least 70 with a significant
number already over 78 (the average life expectancy of Western males).
Furthermore, the majority of those members aged below 70 were between 55
and 65 years of age. These data, coupled the fact that the Society had been
losing members at a rate of 5 – 6% per annum for the last 4 years, suggest that
by 2018, the WSS will have no more than 1,700 members.
The Chairman reminded members that the steady decline of membership
must be set against apparently endless, above-inflation increases in postal
charges at a time when “Marine News” consumes at least 110% of membership
fee income. In his considered opinion, the WSS had reached a stage when there
were no more cuts to make even if the salami slicing approach is used. He
reported that during 2000 – 2012 the WSS had lost about £35,000 and that
although the Society’s reserves looked large they actually amounted to little more
than 18 months running costs. Consequently, instead of having money for
projects, the Society was living a hand-to-mouth existence while at the same time
fighting an endless, demoralising battle to cut costs with limited prospects for
development and growth.
Turning to “Marine News”, the Chairman said that it in this digital age it does
not really contain news, while for some overseas members, it is essentially a
historical document. In effect “Marine News” as delivered currently was fit-forpurpose in the mid to late 20th Century but is rapidly becoming hopelessly
uneconomic in the digital age. He acknowledged that while most existing
members probably prefer hard copy, potential members aged 50 – 60 expect to
get information in a digital format and may not read in the same way as their older
brethren. Clearly, the current format of “Marine News” is unattractive to the next
generation of potential members. It was for these reasons in 2011 that Council
decided to change the standard delivery format of “Marine News” from a monthly
paper copy to a monthly e-journal delivered as an e-mail attachment. The
Chairman reminded members that this had been discussed and approved at the
2011 AGM. The new digital format meant that the magazine would be delivered
to every online member on the same day world wide at a significantly reduced

cost of just £20 (free to Life Members) from 1st January 2013. Richard Osborne
explained that the membership fee of £20 covers the cost of research materials,
production of the .pdf and running the WSS as well as allowing recapitalisation
of the Society. This change will keep the WSS financially viable for at least
another decade while at the same time providing money for projects, growth and
acquisition of archival materials etc. Furthermore, e-journal will be in line with
expectations of future members.
However, it was appreciated that for a variety of reasons, some members
would prefer to have a paper copy in addition to or instead of pdf. Council had
decided that all those wanting a paper copy (including Life Members) could do
so provided they paid the full cost of the printing, packing and postage. He
reaffirmed that from 1st January 2013 the standard form of delivery would be as
a pdf attached to e-mail and reminded those present that for ordinary members,
their membership fee would be either £20 (pdf) or £20 + the cost of a paper copy
(whether or not a pdf is taken). The Chairman finished his report by pointing out
that, because the price of such paper copies was a function of the print run, it
was essential that the Society had an accurate estimate of member’s intentions
for 1st January 2013 and this would be obtained by use of a questionnaire in the
July issue of “Marine News”.
General Secretary’s Report Jimmy Poole thanked the Dorset Branch for
providing a magnificent setting for the AGM and went on to say that the facilities
in the Lifeboat College were superb. Thereafter he thanked Chairman and ViceChairman, both of whom were retiring at this AGM, for their good work over many
years. Picking up on the Chairman’s theme about the move to a digital version of
“Marine News”, Jimmy Poole said that in recent years he had observed more and
more people using “Kindles” rather than books and had even loaded the
magazine onto his own “Kindle”. Jimmy Poole went on to thank John Williams for
sending out pdfs of “Marine News” to so many members and went on to say that
the response had been uniformly favourable especially from overseas members.
He added that the latter are particularly vulnerable to the recent hikes in postal
charges with the price of sending out a single copy of “Marine News” overseas
having risen from £1.12 to £2.20. He observed that the recent price rises had
added 14p to the second class postage rate for each copy of the magazine
posted within the UK.
Jimmy thanked Glenn Smith for his hard work and dedication to the Society’s
website which remained a source of valuable information for members and nonmembers alike. Turning to Chatham, which is now under the leadership of Roy
Fenton, Jimmy praised Alan Watt and his team of volunteers for their excellent
work and added that now that the WSS is a charity, the costs of running the
facility had been reduced thanks to a reduction in rates. Finally, Jimmy spoke
about his concerns that attendances at some Branches had continued to fall. He
noted that Branches formed an important part of the Society’s activities and that
we could not allow them to simply die out.
Treasurer’s Report Richard Osborne, standing in for Bill Mayes who could not
be present, said that the Treasurer was an excellent financial manager who had
performed a vital role for the Society for more than a decade. He explained that
the 2011 Accounts had been delayed by family problems and by the compilation
of the Society’s first annual report to the Charity Commissioners. Richard
Osborne described the nature of this report, which in effect is a self-assessment
document, and then explained how he and Roy Fenton had collaborated to
produce the final form of words. Turning to the report itself he observed that it
included notional time in hours for the Society’s 150 core volunteers. For
example, from his own experience as a Branch Chairman he had allowed 10-15
hours per month for Branch Officers and 20 hours per week for his activities as
Society Chairman. He also drew member’s attention to the future plans aspect of
the report observing that the fulfillment of these plans will set Council’s agenda
for the foreseeable future. Thus, Council will have to look 2-3 years ahead from
now on which will help develop the Society’s activities in a more coherent manner
than hitherto.
Turning the detail in the Accounts, Richard Osborne drew member’s attention

to the cost of “Marine News” which consumed 110% of the subscription and
pointed out postal costs associated with “Marine News” accounted for 25% of
this expenditure. He went on to show that Life Membership subscriptions cost the
Society £2,882 in 2011. Fortunately, this aspect of the deficit was much reduced
by the generosity of many Life Members and observed that these welcome and
generous donations could be put to better use than merely subsidising the
magazine. He went on to show that the Society’s running expenses were minimal
and had not increased inline with inflation during the last decade observing that
most Council members do not claim all the expenses to which they are entitled.
After explaining why some operations were apparently in deficit (caused by the
timing of the reporting cycle), Richard Osborne then addressed the issue of
WSPL photograph prices. He explained that while new technology meant that
prices had been reduced substantially, prices had not been further reduced
because of the need to maintain income. Furthermore, the time freely given by
volunteers needed to be given due value so as to maintain their morale and
effort. Thus, those working for free would rather see their time being used to earn
20p/print for the Society than 1p/print.
Finally, Richard Osborne explained why the three Executive officers would not
sanction breaking into reserves unless there was a fully developed and positive
plan of action for the use of these reserves. He made it clear that the Executive
officers would not sanction the use of reserves to subsidise the continued
production and dispatch of “Marine News”. However, they were prepared to
utilize reserve funds to build for the future – hence plans for an e-journal with
effect from 1st January 2013 and the associated re-capitalisation of the Society.

Membership Secretary’s Report John Williams reported that, unfortunately
but not unexpectedly, the decline in membership had continued since last year
at about the same rate. The total membership reported last year was 2,509
although because of a mistake in the records, this had been adjusted to 2,468.
It had declined to 2,408 by 31st December 2011 – a reduction of 6.5%. The
decline had been at about the same rate for UK, Europe and the Rest of the
World. Compared with the previous year, the number of new members had
declined slightly whilst the number who died had increased slightly. The total
number who resigned or had not renewed for 2012 had been about the same as
for 2010 but unfortunately this was twice as many as had joined. Looked at over
the last four years the decline has been 23% or, put more starkly, almost one
quarter of the membership. Over the four years, the Society has recruited 339
new/rejoined members but 107 existing members have died, 228 have
specifically resigned and 329 have just not renewed. This will give an estimated
membership at 31st December 2012 of 2,330.

The reasons for resignation remained as reported previously but, he noted that
as the membership ages, more are saying that they have lost interest in modern
shipping and hence find that “Marine News” gives far more detailed information
than they want. Conversely, an encouraging aspect arising out of the digital
version of “Marine News” now available is the benefit that a variable print size on
screen gives to members with sight problems. John said that in summary, it had
not been a good year but he continued to be encouraged by the enthusiasm and
loyalty of many members with whom he had contact. Looking ahead, it will be an
interesting and challenging period as the digital “Marine News” is introduced
alongside the traditional printed copy. Finally, he wished to record his thanks to
both Mervyn Park for his work in looking after the non-UK members and also to
Glenn Smith who does similar work for those in North America.
Merchant Ship Committee Roy Fenton said that the Merchant Ship Committee
had become a forum for merchant ship research as well as focal point for
interactions between the various Society committees. He said that the origins of
the Merchant Ship Committee can be traced back to the highly successful and
long-running Naval Sub Committee and a feeling that the Society’s merchant ship
members needed similar support. Roy said that while the Merchant Ship
Committee catered for the needs of all merchant ship enthusiasts it didn’t “do”
photographs, publications or naval.
Turning to the Starke Schell Registers, Roy said these had reached a
significant milestone with the completion of the project. They had been offered
to the Society in 1998 for printing and distribution and had been very beneficial
to the WSS. However, there was no longer any need to advertise the long lists in
“Marine News” but copies would be kept available. He expected that in due
course, the only available copies would be digital. After thanking the distribution
team Roy moved on to the work of the Member’s Questions Team and the work
done by the Period Custodians. With regard to the work of the Yard List Team
which had been lead for many years by Captain John Landells, Roy reported that
it had now supplied over 100,000 pages to members. The scope of their work
had been extended by Andreas von Mach to cover non-UK yards. Another
important aspect of the work of the Merchant Ship Committee was led by Barry
Standerline who held about 1,000 fleet lists which can be made available to
members. While these lists may not be either complete or fully accurate they
provide a basic fleet list which can be used to start a research project. Another
research project supported by the Committee is Fred Hawkes’ series of CDs
devoted to the detailed history of early British steamships.
Roy reported that the third Annual Merchant Ship meeting had taken place in
London in late March, and despite slightly reduced attendance and increased
costs had been successful in all aspects. He said that the event, which had
grown out of earlier “researcher’s meetings”, needed a rethink if it was to have
a long-term future. Thus, while he needed additional support to run the day, there
was also a need to develop an increased number of speakers as well as links
with other organisations.
Finally, after thanking all members of the Committee for their good work over
the years, Roy listed his aspirations for the Merchant Ship Committee. In
particular he felt that the Committee existed to encourage merchant ship
research, extend WSS research facilities to researchers, embrace and facilitate
other merchant ship research projects and to work more closely with the WSS
Publications Committee.
Publications Richard Osborne, standing in for John English, reported that
“Shaw, Savill & Albion”, which had finally appeared in print in January 2012, had
been fully vetted by the Society’s Period Custodians as well as being refereed by
both Roy Fenton and Malcolm Cooper. Richard thanked all those involved in the
production of this book and in particular Ian Farquhar, Graeme Pepper of the
Shaw Savill Society and Roger Jordan for his research input and proof reading.
Turning to future publications, Richard said that the Society’s next publication
“From the Revolution to the Cold War: A History of the Soviet Merchant Fleet from
1917 to 1950” by Marty Bollinger was in an advanced state of preparation. This
meticulously researched and well written book would be about 300 pages in

length with over 170 illustrations.
Chatham Roy Fenton reported on the Society’s Chatham facility saying that its
fortunes had improved markedly during the last two years thanks partly to the
hard work of Mick Reynolds, Alan Watt and other members of the team. The
acquisition of charitable status has reduced costs while at the same time
presenting opportunities for collaboration with like-minded and other charitable
organisations. Chatham has now become the centre for storage and dispatch of
the Society’s publications as well as housing its archives and a library which is
amongst the top six maritime libraries in the UK. Furthermore, Chatham has
become largely self-financing because of the funds raised by selling surplus
second-hand books and photographs donated by members. Turning to the
challenges faced by Chatham, Roy said that we always needed additional
volunteers to man the facility, work on the archives and sell duplicate material.
Finally Roy made a plea to his fellow Council members saying that there was
a need to fully embrace the idea that the WSS had become a charity. Thus,
although the WSS had been a charity for at least a year there was little evidence
of that in the monthly magazine or other Society literature. He went on to suggest
that if Council appoints a Vice-Chairman, that person should be tasked with
ensuring that the Society obtained full benefit of its charitable status as soon as
possible.
Naval Committee Richard Osborne said that this committee was formed as
the Naval Sub Committee in 1975 and is responsible for publishing the quarterly
“Warships” and the “Small Craft Journal”, naval photograph offers, naval
questions, the Annual Naval Meeting (first held in 1979) and the naval aspects of
all WSS publications. After thanking members of the Naval Committee for their
hard work, Richard briefly outlined the programme for the forthcoming Naval
meeting on 2nd June and ended by saying that the 2013 event would take place
on 1st June.
Acceptance of report of 64th AGM held 14.5.2011: Agreed unanimously.
Questions on Reports: (1) Geoff Holmes asked why WSPL prices had not
been significantly reduced following the adoption of digital printing. Jim McFaul
explained that members received a quality product at a competitive price which
also needed to cover investment in technology. He added that while volunteers
were willing to freely give their time they expected to see their efforts earn
significant income for the Society. In response to a supplementary question about
the demise of “Members Requests” Jim McFaul explained that subjects
requested by members now appeared in the usual offers rather than in lists
composed entirely of members’ requests.
(2) Les Cheyne said that he wished to complain about the switch from the
traditional, A5 size paper copy of “Marine News” to the digital version. He added
that as a Life Member he was not happy at having to pay for a paper copy once
the e-journal was introduced in January 2013. The Chairman explained that even
though Life Members would have to pay the full costs of receiving a paper copy
of the magazine, they would not have to pay the £20 subscription to the pdf. The
Chairman, who is not a Life Member, went on to say that in comparison, he would
have to pay the new £20 membership fee as well as the cost of a paper copy
should he require one (i.e. £20 + £25-£35 depending on the print run). Thus, Life
Members taking the pdf only would be in exactly the same position as they are
now - i.e. not having to pay for “Marine News”. Louis Loughran reminded
members that the returns for Life Members, which were promised by the then
Committee, included a mix of free services and those for which they had to pay.
Under Council’s proposals, the pdf form of “Marine News” is still free and the rest
would have to be paid for as usual. The Chairman agreed saying that his
successor, David Littlejohn, had stated unequivocally that “subscription
packages change with time”. He finished by saying that while he understood Les
Cheyne’s point of view, they would have to agree to differ.
In response to a question from Jean Vincent about using distribution services
cheaper than the Royal Mail, Richard Osborne pointed out that our print run was
too low while Jimmy Poole added that because “Marine News” was under 100g
it was sent letter post which is a Royal Mail monopoly.

David Pomeroy asked how Council proposed to stop non-members getting
free copies of the pdf sent on to them by friends. The Chairman said that for the
first year this would be good advertising and would also fit well with the Society’s
profile as a charity. However, he hoped that by 1st January 2014 a password
protected part of the Society’s website would be the place from which the pdf
would be downloaded every month.

FLAGS AND FUNNELS
Some Workhorses

The vast majority of publications, and indeed of my own articles about flags and
funnels deal with the markings of owners of container and bulk carriers, tankers,
coasters and suchlike, and take practically no notice of another kind of
shipowner: those forming that part of the construction industry, involved in drilling
or moving heavy items on, above or below the surface of the sea, requiring a
range of specialised vessels – they cannot all be described as ships – to do so.
Ranging from jack-up rigs to crane barges and semi-submersible heavy lift
vessels, and engaged often in very grimy aspects of their business, these often
escape the notice of the enthusiast in ship’s markings, but in these days when
bulk carriers and even container carriers in liner trades seem loathe actually to
fly their houseflag, they are often a source of interesting markings, even when
funnels as such are noticeable by their absence. I include a small selection this
month.
To begin with, a couple of owners whose vessels do actually resemble proper
ships, since they each specialise in project cargoes requiring heavy lifts and hold
or deck arrangements not possible on ships carrying orthodox loads. The
biggest, first. In 1993 two major Dutch firms in this sector, Wijsmuller Transport
and Dock Express Shipping, combined to become the largest and most versatile
heavy transport company, Dockwise N.V., with a fleet of 11 wholly-owned heavy
lift ships, and a further 4 under management. They even developed a branch
which specialised in the transport of yachts, either from their builders to distant
areas where their owners wished to sail them, or from one of these areas to
another. In 2007 Dockwise came under this joint control of the Heerema group
and Wilhelm Wilhelmsen ASA. Originally its funnel was black with its logo, but
later the black was exchanged for blue; whether this coincided with the change
of control I have yet to confirm.
I mentioned the absence of a funnel on many of these lifting, carrying and
drilling vessels, and even when one exists, it is often as small as possible, and
sometimes tucked out of the way at the stern to allow maximum space for the
project cargo, so it is not always the appropriate place for a distinguishing mark.
In what seems a recognition of this, the funnel of Rolldock Shipping B.V., of
Capelle a/d ljssel, is plain blue, and the houseflag also harks back to the classic
days when most flags were plain, with one or two letters for the company name.
In Rolldock’s case, the design is distinguished by the letter being placed hard up
against the fly, giving it, to my taste, a pleasing effect. To compensate for this
reticent design, the entire afterpart of the black hull is filled with a large white
“ROLLDOCK”.

The drillship “Noble Globe Trotter” was in Rotterdam last year, both its funnel
and flag proudly bearing the company name. It has a long history beginning with
the foundation in 1932 by Lloyd Noble, of Samedan Oil Corporation, an explorer
of crude oil & natural gas and the parent of Noble Drilling, which was spun off
to its shareholders in 1985. The success of Noble Drilling up to the present can
be gauged by the fact that it owns 69 drilling units, including 4 under
construction, and one FPSO. These are employed worldwide, in regions which
at present include the Middle East, Mexican Gulf, North Sea, Brazil, West Africa
and Asia Pacific. The reference to this in the flag and funnel is too detailed to be
clear in my small illustration, but the centre of “O” in each is filled by a Mercator
projection, in yellow, of the world.

The operations of the next company, GeoSea N.V., include marine and civil
engineering, dredging and land reclamation, wreck removal and geophysical
surveys in preparation for some of the above. It is the first which is indicated on
their marking by the “wheel” of dredging buckets – or is it the business end of a
cutter-dredger? Like the companies so far mentioned, its activities are
worldwide. On a much humbler scale, however are the next markings, those of
Van der Straaten Aanemmingsmaatschappij, Selected here partly because their
flag is mainly black, an unusual colour for the field of a houseflag, they are
nevertheless a very long-established firm, being over 100 years old. Their
projects are concerned with the construction industry generally, piling and
pipeline laying, and are confined principally to northern Belgium and the south
of the Netherlands, where they employ crane barges, tugs and workboats.
The next set of markings speaks clearly of its owner’s title and activity. Helix
Well Operations Ltd., of Aberdeen, is a subsidiary of Helix Energy Solutions
Group, of Houston, and performs well intervention, subsea operations and
decommissioning within the group. Its vessels have the drill and helix motif either
on a plain white funnel, or on the white band of a black one. No details of a
houseflag are to hand. The same applies to the markings of GEMS International
N.V., whose initials stand for Geotechnical, Engineering & Marine Surveys. This
was established in 2004 by the purchase of a small Belgian hydrographic survey
company. Within the same year two British-based subsidiaries had been
established: GEMS UK and GEMS Survey Ltd., which use the same funnel
design, where the company initials are cleverly combined into a logo suggesting,
in blue and black, the echoes radiating from below a survey ship’s hull. At
present GEMS Group operates nine specialist survey vessels.
The last group of markings in this article belong to two companies with long
and complex histories of acquisitions and mergers. For example, Acergy S.A.
was formed in 2006, a seabed to surface engineering & construction company,
registered in Luxembourg but with headquarters in London. It began life,
however, in 1970 as Stolt-Nielsen Seaway with North Sea operations. In 1989 it
acquired the French Comex Services, becoming Stolt Comex, and in 2000, after
further acquisitions became Stolt Offshore. A reorganisation to re-focus the
company after the multiplicity of acquisitions culminated in renaming as Acergy
in 2005. Though the funnel is illustrated, I have been unable to confirm a
houseflag for Acergy. In compensation, perhaps, I can illustrate two for Subsea
7, a company with an even more chequered story so far as mergers etc. are
concerned, though space precludes a full listing here. In January 2011 Acergy
bought Subsea 7, and the first flag, flown by the drillship ROCKWATER and the
pipelayer SEVEN OCEANS in two phases of its history, seems to have been
replaced by that flown by the pipelayer/heavy lift ship OLEG STRASHNOV and
the crane ship STANISLAV YUDIN last summer. Acergy itself changed its title by
then to Subsea 7 S.A.

AUSTRALIA CHOULES, the Bay class dock landing ship acquired from the UK
in 2011, has suffered from propulsion problems which necessitated her return to
Sydney for repairs on 14th June.
GERMANY The third Type 702 Berlin class combat support ship BONN (A1413)
was named on 17th April.
INDIA On 22nd May the minesweeper RATNAGIRI was decommissioned at
Mumbai. Two days later the training frigate KRISHNA (F46; ex-HMS
ANDROMEDA) was formally paid off in Mumbai.
On 8th June India’s modernised Kiev class aircraft carrier VIKRAMADITYA left
the Russian port of Severodvinsk for initial sea trials since completing a major
refit at the Sevmash shipyard. The Indian Navy has started construction of a new

dock at the naval dockyard at Mumbai for VIKRAMADITYA. In late June it was
announced that the Indian Navy plans to build a second indigenous aircraft
carrier once the first ship being built by Cochin Shipyard Ltd enters service in
2015 – 2016.
TEG, the first of 3 modified Krivak III/Talwar class stealth frigates being built at
the Russian Yantar shipyard arrived at Mumbai on 22nd June. Her sister
TARKASH has started sea trials prior to delivery in October 2012.
SINDHURAKSHAK, a Kilo class submarine, completed a mid-life modernisation
in Russia on 23rd June and is likely to be equipped with tube-launched Harpoon
anti-ship missiles along with her three other modernised Shishumar class
submarines.
The Leander class frigate VINDHYAGIRI was decommissioned on 10th June, a
year ahead of schedule, thanks to the consequences of a disastrous collision
with MV NORDLAKE near Sunk Rock lighthouse off Bombay on 30th January
2011. Later that day, the frigate caught fire while in dockyard hands and sank
about 15 hours later. The flooding rendered repair uneconomical and the frigate
is likely to be taken out to sea and sunk rather than being broken up.
The Indian Navy is to acquire four state-of-the-art indigenously-built survey ships
which will enter service in 2017 – 2018. MAKAR, the first of six catamaran
inshore survey vessels (12 knots, 53m x 16m) built by Alcock Ashdown Ltd (a
Gujarat government enterprise) has been handed over for trials.
The Indian coastguard has commissioned H 187, the first of 12 45 knot
hovercraft type 8000HD built by Griffon Hoverwork UK.
IRAN At a ceremony on 29th May, Iran re-launched TAREQ, the first of three Kilo
class submarines acquired from Russia in the 1990s, after a lengthy refit. It is
expected that it will be many months before the boat will be operational.
ITALY The ongoing economic crisis is likely to speed up the decommissioning of
26 – 28 vessels during the next 5-6 years. Candidates for decommissioning
include three un-modernised Maestrale class frigates, four Artigliere class fleet
patrol ships, three Lerici class MCMVs, six to eight Minerva class corvettes, four
training vessels and four ocean-going tugs as well as two coastal replenishment
vessels.
MEXICO Two new Tenochtitlan class coastal patrol vessels (TENOCHTITILAN &
TEOTIHUACAN) and five Polaris II interceptor craft (ALBIREO, ALNITAK,
MINTAKA, ALFIRK & ALDERAMIN) entered service on 1st June.
NIGERIA On 1st June the Nigerian Navy commissioned the locally-built seaward
defence craft ANDONI (P 100) which has a crew of 25 and is armed with a 20
mm gun forward plus machine guns. A second boat has been laid down.
PAKISTAN The fast attack craft AZMAT entered service on 23rd June.
RUSSIA On 18th May the Russian Project 11711 class landing ship IVAN GREN
was launched at the Yantar Shipyard in Kaliningrad.
In late May the Russian government signed a contract for the construction of a
further five Borey class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines. The lead
boat, YURI DOLGORUKY (K 535) has entered service while the second of class,
ALEXANDER NEVSKY (K 550), started trials in October 2011 and will enter
service by the end of this year. The third and fourth boats, VLADIMIR
MONOMACH (K 551) and SYVATITEL NIKOLAY are under construction.
SPAIN On 25th June the Aegis-equipped frigate CRISTOBAL COLON (F 105)
started final sea trials at Ferro.
TAIWAN On 1st July, the Taiwanese Navy decommissioned the last 20 of a fleet
of ageing Seagull class missile boats. They have been replaced by 30 171-tonne
craft under a programme which began in 2000.
UNITED ARAB EMIRATES The stealth patrol vessel QARNEN was launched in
mid-June by Fincantieri Muggiano in La Spezia. Her sister GHANTUT was
launched in January.
UNITED KINGDOM The UK MoD has announced that following reversion to the
F-35B STVOL version of the Joint Strike Fighter the decks of the aircraft carriers
QUEEN ELIZABETH and PRINCE OF WALES will have to be coated with a new
heat-resistant surface made of Thermion which is a mechanical bond of
aluminium and ceramic.

On 14th May the Royal Navy received confirmation/approval of the fulfilment of a
series of programmes including both Queen Elizabeth class ‘carriers, six Type
45 destroyers, 13 Type 26 frigates, seven Astute class submarines, construction
of three or four Successor class of submarines to replace the Vanguard class,
64 Lynx Wildcat helicopters, upgrades to the Merlin medium lift helicopters, the
purchase of River class OPVs SEVERN, TYNE and MERSEY which had been
leased from their builders, investment in a future helicopter borne AEW capability
and four new MARS Fleet tankers.
UNITED STATES The Virginia class attack submarine MISSISSIPPI (SSN-782)
entered service on 1st June.
On 2nd June it was announced that the USN is to rebalance its force deployment
from the current 50:50 split between Pacific and Atlantic to a ratio of 60% Pacific:
40% Atlantic by 2020 to meet the growing power of Asian navies.
On 4th June AMERICA, the first of a class of LHAs to replace the ageing Tarawa
class, was launched at Huntington Ingalls Pascagoula shipyard.
During June the 100-year old dreadnought battleship TEXAS, which is moored in
Houston as a museum ship, suffered several serious leaks.

BRAZIL BRAZIL 1 (ex-PORT OF SPAIN), renamed AMAZONAS, day ran from
Portsmouth 12/6 and was handed over to Brazil by BAE 29/6.
The submarine TIKUNA arrived at Naval Station Norfolk for a routine port visit,
7/6. The 11-day visit was in conjunction with the submarine’s 2012 deployment to
the US E Coast and part of a bilateral submarine exercise cooperation initiative
between the United States and Brazil’s submarine forces.
CHINA Training ship ZHENGHE arrived at Taranto 31/5 for a 5-day visit, the 5th
stop on a 30,000 nm voyage.
FRANCE DE GRASSE was at Leith 14/5. STYX & ANTARES arrived at Portsmouth
11/6; ANTARES sailed 12/6, STYX the next day.
GERMANY Among the vessels expected to be present for Kiel Week 15/6 were

NEW YORK transited the Strait of Hormuz and entered the Arabian Gulf for the
first time 10/6, during her maiden deployment.
HAWAII arrived at Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan, as part of its deployment to
the W Pacific, 9/6.
TUCSON returned to Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam after a 6-month
deployment to the W Pacific region, 14/6.
The United States, the ROK and Japan conducted trilateral naval exercise 2122/6 in the waters south of the Korean peninsula. The George Washington CSG
made a port visit to Busan, South Korea, after completing the two exercises. THE
CSG consists of GEORGE WASHINGTON, COWPENS, SHILOH, LASSEN &
MCCAMPBELL.
NITZE arrived in Victoria, Seychelles, for a port visit, 24/6.
BENFOLD left San Diego 15/6 for a scheduled 8-month, independent
deployment to the W Pacific and U.S. Central Command AOR in support of Navy
Ballistic Missile Defense.
MICHIGAN arrived at Yokosuka, 13/6, as part of its deployment to the W Pacific.
USNS MERCY on Pacific Partnership 2012 completed its first mission port in
North Sulawesi, Indonesia, 15/6; the ship arrived in the Philippines 18/6, to begin
the second host nation visit of the mission.
Eisenhower CSG members DWIGHT D EISENHOWER, WINSTON S CHURCHILL
& JASON DUNHAM (on her maiden deployment) deployed from Naval Station
Norfolk, Va., and HUE CITY & FARRAGUT from Naval Station Mayport, Fla., 20/6,
to support operations in the U.S. Navy’s 5th and 6th Fleets.
UNDERWOOD participated in a passing exercise (PASSEX) with ships from the
Chilean navy while en route to Iquique, Chile, 16/6. UNDERWOOD operated with
three Chilean ships: the Piloto Pardo-class patrol ship COMMANDANTE TORRO,
and the Riquelme-class fast attack craft URIBE & SERRANO during the daylong
exercise.
BLUE RIDGE visited Tokyo 17/6.
NORMANDY anchored outside of Karlskrona, Sweden, for a scheduled port visit,
20/6.
PITTSBURGH and ANNAPOLIS returned to New London, 27/6, following
scheduled 6-month deployments.
CHICAGO arrived at Fleet Activities Yokosuka 29/6 for its first port visit as part of
its W Pacific deployment.

BRANCH NOTES
BEDFORD:
As always, Dave Sutton gave us an excellent evening’s
entertainment in ‘Yet more holiday snaps’, complete with comments on people
who caught his eagle eye. We started off with a tour of Venice, covering craft
large and small. Then Switzerland with its lake traffic and railways, an area not
covered at our meetings before. This was followed by a cruise down the Rhine
from Basel to Amsterdam. Dave then visited Barcelona and cruised to Miami on
the NORWEGIAN EPIC. Please keep travelling Dave and we will remember the
lovely Swiss scenery and you can’t see Bedford from the Matterhorn! In June
Dave Menzies recounted a trip that was organised to celebrate his 70th birthday
in June 2011. He flew to Hong Kong where only one passenger ship was to be
seen; a small Russian vessel; but there were many other vessels to be seen. Then
on to Brisbane; where the effects of the flooding were to be seen. Melbourne
followed with a foray over the border to South Australia to Adelaide and Victor
Harbour and its horse-drawn tramway. The last night in Melbourne, 5th July, was
the local Branch meeting where Dave had taken a Sid Belham dvd which was
shown and supplemented by local shots of the QUEENs visiting the port. The last
leg was to Singapore, where a mass of shipping was to be seen, and then home.
A memorable trip.
BURNIE: In March Kirby Cunningham, Chaplain to the Mission to Seafarers in
Burnie, gave a comprehensive programme about the history and activities of the
Mission and its place in the Burnie shipping scene. Kirby subsequently joined our
branch as a member! Our speaker in April was Rex Cox, President of Hobart
Branch. Rex presented a fascinating slide show of the great variety of shipping
in the Port of Hobart since the 1950s. At out May meeting we viewed a dvd of
the building of a modern cruise ship INDEPENDENCE OF THE SEAS.
DORSET: The highlight for the Branch in May was the hosting of the WSS AGM
at the RNLI College in Poole. Members from far and wide enjoyed the weekend
starting with a welcome by the College Principal and an informative talk about
Poole Harbour by former Harbour Commissioner, Peter Burt. Tours included a
visit to the port with an excellent presentation, the RNLI, a Purbeck coach tour,
including Corfe Castle, and a three hour Poole Harbour cruise all in beautiful
weather. Ninety of us enjoyed the traditional AGM Dinner.
EAST KENT: Sam Pellatt opened the May meeting with a short show on recent
Thames shipping. The remainder of the evening was Vice Chairman, Andrew
Humphries’ night; with Andrew giving an excellent presentation of early Margate
and Ramsgate shipping which was drawn from a number of local photographers.
A few ships aground and plenty of sailing barges and coasters; it was a really
interesting show, illustrating how busy these ports were in the past. In June Mark
and Pam Bathurst from the MEDWAY QUEEN Preservation Society gave us a
really interesting presentation on the history, demise and restoration of the
MEDWAY QUEEN. The work that has been done to restore the historic paddler to
her former glory is really impressive. Good luck to them with the project.
FIRTH OF CLYDE: We had a good turn-out for the final meeting of the season
in April when Paul Strathdee gave us his ‘Year on the Clyde 2011’ show. Last year
marked 300 years since the founding of the shipbuilder Scotts of Greenock and
he duly commemorated this milestone. Paul also looked back at shipping lines
that were regular visitors to King George V dock such as Blue Funnel, Clan Line,
Port Line and Ben Line. Down river we viewed the cruise ships together with
visiting naval vessels to be seen during joint exercises. Now that both operators
to Northern Ireland sail from Cairnryan, Paul took a look at some of the last Stena
ferries to operate out of Stranraer including the STENA VOYAGER. At a recent
committee meeting the future of the December meeting was discussed and it
was unanimously decided to discontinue it. On a brighter note when we send out
the branch syllabus for next year we will be asking for your e-mail addresses so
that we will be able to contact you electronically in future rather than by post and
thus reducing our costs.
GLOUCESTER: For our April meeting one of our Branch founder members, Les
Dalton, presented ‘The last two years of CANBERRA’. Les had had a cruise in
May 1996 on the CANBERRA, which visited locations around the Mediterranean
which included Gibraltar, St. Tropez, Elba, Naples, Sicily and Barcelona. Visits
were made to the Trafalgar cemetery in Gibraltar and to Pompeii from Naples. We

were honoured to have at the meeting a former 4th engineer who served on the
ship when she was fairly new. Thank you, Les for an interesting and informative
evening. Our May meeting was the Branch AGM where all officials and
committee members were re-elected en-bloc. A new member, Alan Drewett, was
also appointed. A few days later we held our Annual Branch Dinner with 11
members and friends present. The model boat evening had to be cancelled
because of rain.
HAVEN PORTS: Steve Thomas brought back memories of the 1980s with a slide
show from his travels in the Far East. The show was in two halves, one devoted
to Hong Kong and the other to Singapore. It was a decade when general cargo
ships were being replaced by containerisation, and his slides contained a nice
cross-section of reefers, bulkers, tankers and freighters as well as the first
generation of container vessels. It was a magnificent show which was
appreciated by all attending the May meeting at the Seafarer’s Centre in the Port
of Felixstowe. In June Bernard McCall gave a presentation ‘Coastal shipping and
tripping’. He recalled in particular travels in Scottish waters aboard a BP coastal
tanker from Grangemouth delivering oil to remote communities in Caithness,
North Uist, the Isle of Lewis, Bressay in the Shetlands and Orkney. His slides
included excellent shots of shipping in the Pentland Firth and interesting views
from the sea of John o Groats, Dunnet Head and Cape Wrath. It was an excellent
evening which was enjoyed by all; many thanks Bernard.
ISLE OF MAN: On March 2nd Roy Cripps showed us pictures taken from
EMERALD QUEEN on a Danube river cruise. He started in Budapest bound for
Nuremburg and we saw many barges loaded with a variety of cargoes and many
fine buildings. Thanks Roy. On 16th Jim Charnock spoke about the Manchester
Ship Canal over the last 30 years and showed us the major changes that have
taken place in Salford where the docks have been transformed into a living area.
Ships still use the canal and we saw the demise of the liner services to the
present day traffic which is much less and the ships are much smaller.
Surprisingly there are still ferry cruises along the canal. Thanks Jim.
MANCHESTER: We held our Branch AGM in May when the entire Committee
was re-elected en bloc. Our bank balance is strong and the decision to change
to afternoon meetings was reaffirmed as a great success. Following the meeting
slides were shown by Reg Bailey, Jim Charnock and Peter Wynne. In June
Bernard McCall returned with part 2 of his show ‘Shipping and tripping’. This
detailed ports visited and ships seen on two long and one short trip. We saw
much of the Baltic and the vast variety of ships sailing under many flags. We also
visited South Wales where Bernard’s wife had the honour of being a ‘tug captain’
for a few hours. The first long trip ended well up the River Trent whilst the second
ended at Shoreham. It was a fascinating afternoon! Thanks Bernard.
MELBOURNE: Our guest speaker in May was Donald Walker – the author of
‘Beacons of hope’. We were treated to a fascinating presentation on the history
of the Bass Strait and its lighthouses. Bass Strait became the main route of ships
sailing along the south coast of Australia after lighthouses were established in
the 1840s. Prior to this, ships went to the south of Tasmania or risked being
wrecked, as happened to many if the attempted to sail through the strait. We
thank Donald for telling us about this development to enable ships to arrive safely
in Melbourne. In June Tim Asome told us about his experiences both at sea and
at the Sembawang Shipyard. Tim is the General Manager of ASP Ship
Management and kindly arranges ship visits when the opportunity arises. The
Branch is honoured that our Secretary, Ron Parker, has been awarded the Order
of Australia Medal for service to the community including, of course, our Branch.
We thank and congratulate you Ron. A small group of members recently
accepted an invitation to visit the Port of Melbourne control tower and
appreciated their kind hospitality.
MERSEYSIDE: In May we were pleased to welcome that well known maritime
author Ian Collard, who gave us a great evening’s entertainment about 1960s and
1970s Mersey shipping. Ian’s images were taken whilst on his way to work on the
morning ferry, from his office window in the Cunard Building or on a lunchtime
walk along Princess Parade. He also showed ships in the North and South docks
and Birkenhead pointing out many examples of most of the shipping companies’
vessels you would expect around that era, amazing nostalgia. Thanks very much
Ian for a wonderful presentation and we hope to see you again soon. In June

John Luxton showed us images of a 2008 cruise aboard Fred Olsen’s BLACK
WATCH from Southampton around the Iberian peninsular. John has interests in all
forms of transport so it was particularly interesting to see the trams operating
around the streets of La Coruna and Lisbon. We also visited Vigo and saw shots
of many different vessels that John observed of his voyage which made a
fascinating evening’s entertainment. Thanks John.
MID ESSEX: The Manchester Branch production ‘Five steps to Manchester’ was
shown at our May meeting for at least the second time since it was compiled in
1976. The slide quality had surprisingly not seemed to have deteriorated over the
years. The show took us on a journey from the Mersey estuary through the five
locks to the docks in Salford and Manchester describing each lock, quay and
bridge. The area was highly industrialised in the 1970s and supported many ship
types with many a nostalgic sight of coasters, Manchester Liners, bulk carriers,
tankers, James Fisher’s heavy lift ships and good old cargo liners! Being a Bank
Holiday, our June meeting was a members’ evening. This featured the film ‘The
RNLI, a review of the year 2010’. This was followed by a film on the construction
of P & O’s CANBERRA at Harland & Wolff between 1957 and 1961. Our
Chairman, Robin Butcher, was ‘on the water’ in a Thames barge moored
alongside HMS PRESIDENT at the previous day’s Jubilee Thames River Pageant.
He showed us images of this wonderful spectacle which was so enthusiastically

NEW SOUTH WALES: At the May meeting we were shown a dvd on the Ball’s
Head coal loader in Sydney harbour which ceased operations in 1992 and parts
of it now form an educational centre run by the local council. The dvd gave a
potted history of the area prior to the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788. It then
moved on to the establishment in the late 19th century, with the advent of coal
fired steamships, of a coaling/bunker depot. This lasted till the 1950s when the
number of ships requiring coal bunkers virtually ceased. It was then used as a
coal depot operated by different collieries until the 1970s when a contract to
supply coal to Japanese power plants was negotiated. This lasted until 1992
when the loader closed as part of a general run-down of Sydney harbour that
has continued and now the harbour is basically a ‘pleasure port’.
NORTH WEST KENT: Steve Spouse came along to our May meeting to present
his slide show ‘Thames and Medway’. He started off with pictures of tugs dating
from the 1920s that he had copied from various sources and then went on to
show a whole range of shipping taken from a wide range of viewpoints including
tower blocks and cranes! This was followed by a collection of very good night
shots. Thanks Steve for a very interesting evening.
NORTHERN IRELAND: Our proposed April meeting was postponed and Roy
Snowden stepped in at short notice and gave a presentation entitled ‘Luxury
liners pre-1940s’. It included photographs and video clips from mostly transAtlantic liners, which were competing for passenger trade from various European
and British ports to New York, and the great differences between 1st class, 2nd
class/tourist class and 3rd class. It was a nostalgic look at bygone days which
was enjoyed by a good turn-out of members. On 14th May members visited the
cruise ship MARCO POLO. Our thanks to Cruise and Maritime Voyages for a most
excellent ship visit. The May meeting was an excellent presentation by Harry
Foster mainly featuring photographs taken whilst serving on the Shell tankers
HEMICARDIUM and DAPHNELLA. These included an escorted naval river
passage in Vietnamese waters, Caribbean port visits and Belfast and Dublin
ports in the 1980s.
PLYMOUTH: We welcomed Bob Cook to our May meeting with his presentation
‘A worthy view of Plymouth waterfront’. This comprised of a digital collection of
glass plate negatives from his collection and from the John Bouldon and Richard
Faber collections. The superb quality of these glass plate negatives has to be
seen to be believed, they covered an area of the Plymouth waterfront from the
River Plym through Cattedown and the Barbican-Plymouth Hoe, Millbay Docks
and Turnchapel. Most were taken between 1865 and 1944 with evocative pictures
of J class yachts racing in the Sound to 1895 photos of HMSD DEVASTATION at
Devonport. The aforementioned warship featured on the cover of ‘Old Glory’
match boxes. Many thanks, Bob for a fascinating evening. In June Ian Denton
gave us a presentation on Cunard’s £500 million QUEEN ELIZABETH. Ian related
the history of this 92,000 ton ship from planning and design to the actual

construction by Fincantieri’s Monfalcone shipyard until the christening by H.M.
the Queen in Southampton at the end of 2010. Since the rise of more balcony
cabins on the now larger cruise ships have taken off, many of them have become
to look like hideous blocks of flats under the old adage ‘pack-em in’, with some
having balcony decks rising 11 decks high. The new QUEEN ELIZABETH has a
more sensible design with a maximum of 5 balcony decks giving the ship a more
attractive design which is more pleasing to the eye.
PORT NATAL: In March Rev. Boet van Schalkwyk, of the Durban Branch of the
International Sailors Society, gave a talk. In April we celebrated notching up 40
years of existence. Two of our founder members; Alec Young and David
Shackleton; live locally. A third, Henry Aitken, now lives in Norwich, UK and has
recently joined the branch there (definitely their gain and our loss!). In May,
suitably, a TITANIC evening was held with a video and exhibition inclusions. We
did have a night to remember.
SOUTH COAST: Martin Wright made a welcome return to the branch when he
presented his ‘Nautical miscellany’. Through his camera we visited the Polish
ports of Gdansk, Gdynia, Szczecin, Kolobrzeg and Swinoujscie in 1992 and
again in 2009. We then travelled to Vietnam to view shipping at Saigon before
coming back to the North Atlantic to visit Las Palmas and then into the
Mediterranean to conclude our journey at Messina. At each port we toured the
local docks viewing a wide variety of shipping as well as the local shipbuilding
and repair yards. Members warmly thanked Martin for a fascinating and wideranging evening. In June Krispen Atkinson presented ‘Cornish ports and
harbours, part 3’ when he took us on a fascinating tour of all the ports to be
found from Mounts Bay and along the coast of north Cornwall to Bude. In an
excellent presentation we viewed the ports today and in their heyday in earlier
times, all enhanced by Krispen’s well-informed commentary and an imaginative
use of aerial maps. A wide variety of coasters through the years were seen along
with some commercial docks which have now almost disappeared. Thanks,
Krispen, for a most interesting evening and part 4 is eagerly anticipated.
SOUTHAMPTON: Our May meeting featured a return to the Falkland Islands
conflict in 1982, this being the 30th anniversary. Bill Lawes presented our
branch’s Tape/Slide show featuring the majority of the Merchant and Royal Naval
vessels participating in the action from the ports of Southampton and
Portsmouth. The excellent narration was provided by Sandy Jones of Radio
Solent and featured the transformation of many merchant vessels to war
readiness. A special guest at our meeting was Capt. Clark of the EUROPIC
FERRY, with his daughter. He narrated many of his ship’s actions and gave other
overall recollections of the conflict. It was a brilliant production evoking many
memories. Due to illness we had a late change of speaker in June when Colin
Drayson presented his first digital show ‘The start of it all’. Colin started work in
the 1950s close to the River Itchen wharves, where his interest in ships was born.
We were treated to photographs of quays long since redeveloped and the
coasters then to be seen. After he acquired a cycle we were then entertained by
accounts of lunchtime visits into the Eastern Docks with views of the larger ships
then calling in the main port. The talk concluded in the mid-1960s with Colin
joining the QUEEN ELIZABETH then coming ashore to start work as a docker. It
was a very interesting evening, full of nostalgic views.
SOUTHEND: At our May meeting we welcomed Ken Larwood from East Kent
Branch. Ken presented ‘Tugs to Tankers’ although ‘and everything else in
between’ should have been added to the title because that’s what it was! Most
types of ship were represented although some wag was heard to comment
‘Where’s the Woolwich ferry then?’ Ken’s work as an electrician enabled free
access to U.K. ports with unrivalled scope for ship photography and he felt bitter
when, upon retirement, his various dock passes were withdrawn. Ken gave us
details of every ship that was seen although he did admit he was not too familiar
with RN vessels. It was a cracking evening. In June we saw the second part of
the excellent slide show ‘The widening Thames’ put together by London Branch
in 1982. We started at the Royal Docks entrance and proceeded down river past
Dagenham, Erith, Purfleet and Greenhithe where Everard were based. Onward
via Gravesend and Tilbury, the highlight of which was a photo of the giant tanker
HALCYON THE GREAT was seen; she was the largest vessel ever to pass
Gravesend. Now in the open sea we passed Shell Haven, Coryton and Canvey
Inland, Southend Pier complete with barges and WAVERLEY and ending at the

estuary forts. It was an excellent evening of unabashed nostalgia.
SWANSEA & W.WALES: In May John English gave us an illustrated talk on the
‘Battle of the Atlantic 1939-45’. He spoke with great knowledge of the ships, both
merchant and naval, and of the opposition they faced and the conditions they
endure for the longest battle of the War. It was amazing to see and hear of the
great advances in equipment during this period, from ships built for WWI to ships
that continued in service for 20 more years, each side trying to outwit and
overcome the other. In June Elizabeth Holmes gave a show of ships of 40 years
ago. It was pure nostalgia. We started with HMS GLAMORGAN of 1966 followed
by passenger ships of that era, many cargo ships and tankers of companies now
long gone and naval vessels when we had a navy. We went on ship visits and
excursions with the Society both in this country and on the Continent. It was a
small selection of ships from a large collection of slides taken by Liz over the
years and it was well worthwhile.
TEESSIDE: As a departure from the norm; David Hunter, Chairman of the 500
Group, a Teesside based group of bus enthusiasts, gave a presentation on bus
restoration. He showed photographs of the restoration of two unique buses
which are on the road and a third at present being restored. The buses are used
at up to 18 rallies per year and running days on Teesside. The second part of the
presentation was a photographic history of the Teesside Tramway system from
inception in the 1850s to closure in the 1930s. Many thanks, David for an
informative and interesting evening. On 6th June Geoff Hainsworth gave his final
talk about his circumnavigating the globe aboard his yacht T’EARLY BIRD.
Leaving Thailand he crossed the Indian Ocean, traversed the Suez Canal and
then cruising the canals of France to Calais. He finally arrived back at Hartlepool
39 months after leaving. Many thanks, Geoff, for your very interesting series of
presentations. On 20th June Nathan Hobday, by far the youngest of our
speakers, presented a series of excellent photographs of shipping on and
around the Tees.
Many were taken from the Pilot Cutter on which he works. Many thanks, Nathan.
THAMES VALLEY: In May we enjoyed the WSS slide show ‘Shipping and ships
in Japan’ produced in 1977. A very well presented and informative narration
accompanied a set of slides showing the shipping seen in the early 1970s in a
variety of Japanese ports. Photos taken at a time when ships looked like ships,
including a fine shot of the KUNGSHOLM and GRIPSHOLM together, provided a
lovely evening of nostalgia. In June Allan Onions came to the branch to give us
part one of his ‘History of shipping and shipbuilding along the Danube’. He gave
us a potted history of the area before starting in 1829 with DDSG which was
developed by Bristol engineers. We travelled from Germany to Hungary,
including the areas where locomotives aided ships to beat strong currents.
Although the Danube is long and wide, it is not always deep, and so ships are
partially constructed and then taken further down river so that their
superstructure can be fitted in place. It was a well researched and very
interesting evening.
TYNESIDE: Our May meeting was the continuation of Paul Hood’s voyage on
the ORIANA, which he had joined in Dubai. We now arrived in Singapore and the
ship was berthed away from the usual cruise terminal and this provided views of
many assorted harbour craft and other commercial vessels. We then moved on
to Saigon (Ho Chi Min City to those stuck in the past) and then Nha Trang, also
in Vietnam, before ending the voyage in Hong Kong. As usual, Paul provided not
only full detail of the many vessels he had photographed but also showed varied
and interesting views of the scenery and buildings he and Carol saw on their
excursions ashore. At the June meeting Paul Hood gave us a fascinating report
on the WSS A.G.M. that was held at Poole. We saw much of the shipping scene
in the port as well as the Society activities that took place over the weekend.

VANCOUVER: Our March meeting opened with the announcement that two of
our long-standing members, Jean Miller and John Cannon, recently passed
away. We extend our condolences to their families. The presentation was ‘Ray’s
Alaska adventure’, which consisted of our President, Ray Warren’s photographs
aboard STEVESTON LIFEBOAT with friend and fellow artist John Horton between
June 14 and July 8 2011. Ray showed superb shots of tugs, military ships,
container ships, cruise ships and fishing vessels as well as lighthouses,
geography and wildlife.

Agno, Philippines in position 16.10N, 119.45E. The crew were taken off and she was
subsequently abandoned by her owners but on 19/6/2012 she broke apart in heavy seas off
Agno and her cargo was dispersed. She was on passage from Indonesia for China with
6,000 tonnes of bitumen.

flooded 22/3/2012 in the South China Sea about 70 miles SW of Kaohsiung in position 21.56N,
119.27E. Towed initially to Kaohsiung for inspection and declared a total loss. Subsequently
sold to Jiangmen Xinhui Shuangshui Ship Breaking Co., China, for demolition and arrived
Xinhui 27/5/2012. She had been on passage from Tangshan for Bintulu with cement.
FLASH (Launched as Daytona), 91,373/09 – bulk carrier, owned by Baby Shipping Ltd.
(GEDEN Lines), Malta. Grounded 25/6/2012 off the Galite Islands, Tunisia, in position
37.33N, 08.57E, and sustained some hull damage and the engine-room was flooded. Salvors
have been appointed. She was on passage from Newport News for Taranto with 126,000
tonnes of coal.

owned by Renel Horace, Honduras. Stranded 21/6/2012 on a reef off Mona Island, Puerto
Rico, in position 18.04N, 67.55W. She was carrying Haitian migrants but no casualties were
reported.
KUBAN* (Ladoga-18 -05), 1,639/80 – general cargo, owned by Tradegain Ltd., St.Vincent
& the Grenadines. Stranded 2/7/2011 (n.b.) in the Gulf of Finland off Nerva Island in position
60.14N, 27.57E and sustained serious damage to her ballast tanks. Refloated 3/7 with tug
assistance and subsequently declared a total loss. Sold to Latvian breakers and 14/7 arrived
Liepaja. She was on passage from Kunda for Imatra with timber.
MISS ELLISA (Adonai -09, Alpha and Omega -08, Placentia Sound -07, Greeba River 97, Tora -88, Cynthia June -86, Arklow River -82, Apollo I -80), 485/69 – general cargo, owned

U BOAT ATTACK LOGS : A complete guide of warship sinkings from original
records 1939¬ 1945 by Daniel Morgan and Bruce Taylor; published by Seaforth
Publishing; price £45.00.
This excellent book is divided into 109 chapters, each of which describes the
sinking of an allied warship by a U-boat. Each chapter gives technical and
detailed career details of the warship lost the circumstances of the action, Uboat log entries with comments, the sinking itself; the fate of the crew and the
fate of the U-boat concerned and that of her commander. These elements are
enhanced by photographs of the lost ship, many of the U-boats and the majority
of the commanders. The fog of war is emphasised by discrepancies between
the U-boat log entries and claims made with actual ships lost. The vulnerability
to torpedo attack of small escorts such as corvettes and destroyers is shown
with the fates of the destroyer VETERAN and the corvettes GLADIOLUS and
SALVIA not being explained until post war analysis of German records. The
vulnerability of AMCs, un-modified battleships and cruisers of the ARETHUSA
and DIDO classes is also brought out. The book despite its title, does not cover
all U- boat attacks during the war, in fact only attacks up to December 1944 are
covered. The records of later losses were destroyed in the confusion resulting
from the end of the war. An extensive appendix gives details of all other losses
that are not covered in the text. This is a well-researched and produced book,
which is profusely illustrated and well worth the cover price. Highly
recommended.

With the World Ship Society Ltd. now a registered charity, a successful
application has been made to the rating authority for the Chatham Library and
Archive, resulting in a very substantial reduction of the business rates payable
on our premises. With the moneys received from sales of second-hand
publications and photographs at the facility, this means that the gap between
income and the expenditure on rent and rates at Chatham is now small. Like any
publisher, the WSS needs warehousing facilities, and the Chatham Management
Committee believes the Society is now getting an excellent deal, with Chatham
housing the majority of its book stocks as well as its substantial library and a
growing archive.
Donations and legacies
Following the appeal in this column in January, several members have contacted
us about donating material or leaving it to the WSS in their will. We are very
grateful for this, and would encourage others to follow suit, as there are gaps in
our collection of books and journals.
We are delighted to receive donations, with the proviso that anything which
duplicates material already held may be offered for sale. Such sales ensure
other members have the opportunity to enjoy surplus books and photographs,
whilst the income goes a substantial way to meet running costs. Please contact
one of those listed below.
An important purpose of the Chatham Library and Archive is to offer a home
for research materials which members have built up, and ensure it is available for
others to consult. The management team is anxious to extend this, and guidance
notes for those wishing to leave their material to the WSS are in course of
preparation.
Retail opportunities
The stock of surplus second-hand books and journals on sale at Chatham is
continually changing, and – as well as calling in – members are invited to contact
us to see if specific items they require are available. For instance, many postwar editions of ‘Lloyd’s Register’ are available at attractive prices, and there are
even a few copies of that elusive but very useful publication ‘Lloyd’s Confidential

Visiting and volunteering
The growing library at Chatham offers significant facilities for research into
shipping, and houses some resources which are simply not available elsewhere,
such as WSS branch magazines. Members and friends are strongly
recommended to drop in at any time during opening hours to use the research
and library facilities. They can also enjoy retail opportunities covering both new
WSS publications plus many second-hand books and magazines.
The team of volunteers at Chatham, who man the facility during opening
hours, would welcome further support. Anyone who can spare a few hours is
invited to contact Alan Watt (details below).
Book despatch from Chatham
Thanks to the efforts of a group of Chatham volunteers ably organised by Alan
Watt, during December several tons of WSS publications were speedily
unloaded from the van delivering them from the former Bridgwater store, and
quickly organised and taken into stock. With the exception of the recentlypublished ‘Shaw Savill’, despatch of all new WSS publications is now centralised

Library and Archive opening times
The Library and Archive in the Chatham Historic Dockyard is usually open from
at least 11am to 4pm seven days each week until the end of November. However,
as occasionally the volunteer on duty may be indisposed, members travelling
some distance to Chatham should take the precaution of checking beforehand
with Mick Reynolds or Alan Watt (see below).
