together as the family of God, in our
Father’s presence, to celebrate the great
festival of Christmas. In this service we
hear and receive the good news of the
birth of Christ and we offer to God our
thanksgiving in the joyful singing of
carols

But as we gather together in the name of
Christ, so we pray for all in special need.
For those who live in fear or sorrow, for
the sick, the anxious, the lonely and the
bereaved; for countries torn apart by war
that the peace and light of Christ may
bring hope and healing to all who sit in
darkness.

Listen to me, O coastlands, pay attention, you peoples from far away! The Lord called me
before I was born, while I was in my mother’s womb he named me. He made my mouth like
a sharp sword, in the shadow of his hand he hid me; he made me a polished arrow, in his
quiver he hid me away. And he said to me, ‘You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will be
glorified.’ But I said, ‘I have laboured in vain, I have spent my strength for nothing and
vanity; yet surely my cause is with the Lord, and my reward with my God.’ And now the
Lord says, who formed me in the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob back to him, and
that Israel might be gathered to him, for I am honoured in the sight of the Lord, and my God
has become my strength - he says, ‘It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to
raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the survivors of Israel; I will give you as a light to
the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.’

Le sixième mois, l'ange Gabriel fut envoyé par Dieu dans une ville de Galilée, appelée
Nazareth, à une jeune fille, une vierge, accordée en mariage à un homme de la maison de
David, appelé Joseph ; et le nom de la jeune fille était Marie. L'ange entra chez elle et dit : «
Je te salue, Comblée-de-grâce, le Seigneur est avec toi. » A cette parole, elle fut toute
bouleversée, et elle se demandait ce que pouvait signifier cette salutation. L'ange lui dit alors
: « Sois sans crainte, Marie, car tu as trouvé grâce auprès de Dieu. Voici que tu vas

Mordechai seeks his daughter Esther's aid

Mordecai told them to reply to Esther, ‘Do not think that in the king’s palace you will escape
any more than all the other Jews. For if you keep silence at such a time as this, relief and
deliverance will rise for the Jews from another quarter, but you and your father’s family will
perish. Who knows? Perhaps you have come to royal dignity for just such a time as this.’
Then Esther said in reply to Mordecai, ‘Go, gather all the Jews to be found in Susa, and hold
a fast on my behalf, and neither eat nor drink for three days, night or day. I and my maids
will also fast as you do. After that I will go to the king, though it is against the law; and if I
perish, I perish.’
Mardochée lui fit dire : « Ne t'imagine pas que tu pourras échapper, toi seule, au sort des Juifs
parce que tu vis dans le palais. Si tu refuses d'intervenir dans les circonstances présentes, les
Juifs recevront de l'aide d'ailleurs s et ils seront sauvés. Toi, par contre, tu mourras et ce sera la
fin de ta famille. Mais qui sait ? Peut-être est-ce pour faire face à une telle situation que tu es
devenue reine. » Alors Esther envoya ce message à Mardochée : « Va rassembler tous les Juifs
qui se trouvent à Suse, observez un jeûne en ma faveur. Pendant trois jours et trois nuits ne
prenez ni nourriture ni boisson. Mes servantes et moi, nous agirons de même de notre côté. Puis
je me rendrai auprès du roi bien que ce soit contraire à la loi, et si je dois mourir, je mourrai ! »

What Esther? When you see your own country perishing, do you think only of saving your own
life? God speaks, and yet you fear the wrath of a mere mortal? What can I say, Esther, does your
life belong to you? Does it not belong to your family from which you were born? Does it not
belong to God, who gave it to you? And who knows, when God led you to this throne, if he was
not saving you in order to save his people? Think well on this: God did not choose you to be a
vain spectacle for the people of Asia, nor to delight the eyes of profane men. God reserves a
more noble destiny for his saints – to offer themselves in sacrifice for his name and for his
inheritance – See, this is the true lot of a child of Israel, or are you too fortunate to risk your life
for him! As if God’s strength needs anything we could bring. For what can all the kings of the
earth do against God? In vain would they join forces to wage war against him.

Elizabeth greets the Blessed Virgin Mary

In those days Mary set out and went with haste to a Judean town in the hill country, where
she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s
greeting, the child leapt in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and
exclaimed with a loud cry, ‘Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your
womb. And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? For as
soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb leapt for joy. And blessed
is she who believed that there would be a fulfilment of what was spoken to her by the Lord.’
And Mary said, ‘My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, for
he has looked with favour on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all
generations will call me blessed; for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy
is his name.'
En ces jours-là, Marie se mit en route et se rendit avec empressement vers la région
montagneuse, dans une ville de Judée. Elle entra dans la maison de Zacharie et salua Élisabeth.
Or, quand Élisabeth entendit la salutation de Marie, l’enfant tressaillit en elle. Alors, Élisabeth

En ces jours-là, parut un édit de l'empereur Auguste, ordonnant de recenser toute la terre - ce
premier recensement eut lieu lorsque Quirinius était gouverneur de Syrie. - Et chacun allait
se faire inscrire dans sa ville d'origine. Joseph, lui aussi, quitta la ville de Nazareth en
Galilée, pour monter en Judée, à la ville de David appelée Bethléem, car il était de la maison
et de la descendance de David. Il venait se faire inscrire avec Marie, son épouse, qui était
enceinte. Or, pendant qu'ils étaient là, arrivèrent les jours où elle devait enfanter. Et elle mit
au monde son fils premier-né ; elle l'emmaillota et le coucha dans une mangeoire, car il n'y

In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered.
This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to
their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea,
to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of
David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a
child. While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her
firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no
place for them in the inn. In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch
over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord
shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid; for
see--I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the
city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a
child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger." And suddenly there was with the angel a
multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace among those whom he favors!"

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed
away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down
out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud
voice from the throne saying, ‘See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with
them; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them; he will wipe every tear
from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for
the first things have passed away.’ And the one who was seated on the throne said, ‘See, I
am making all things new.’ Also he said, ‘Write this, for these words are trustworthy and
true.’ Then he said to me, ‘It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the
end. To the thirsty I will give water as a gift from the spring of the water of life. Those who
conquer will inherit these things, and I will be their God and they will be my children.

Almighty and merciful God, you call us once
again to celebrate the coming of your Son.
Remove from us all that hinders our love of
you, so that when he comes again, we will
