TAKE THIS DOG JOB AND WALK IT
TAKE THIS DOG JOB AND WALK IT
Professional dog walking has become a popular way for some New Yorkers to make a
living, as well as a welcome service for many pet owners, who don't have the time or energy
after long work days to do it themselves. Dog walking seems to be growing in popularity both
as a profession and as one of the city's luxury habits. « I see more of those big groups of dogs
being walked each year », said Eddie Jimenez, a doorman who has worked 18 years at the
Corniche, a 40-storey building on East 87th Street. « There are hundreds of dogwalking
services in this city, » said Robin Kovary, director of the American Dog Trainers Network, a
non-profit dog information service.
She said that the number of pack walkers is increasing, mostly because it's an easy
way to make money. Dog walkers can earn from $12 to $20 per walk per dog, she said. But
Kovary, who has been in the dog walking for 16 years, warned of the risks involved. Pack
walking business requires physical strength, as well as an ability to understand and even
anticipate the actions of the animals.
Jonathan Hale, 22, came to New York after college in Australia. He has been walking
dogs full-time since. « It's a great way to make a living here in the city , » said Hale, who
walks 17 dogs each day. for a total of five hours, 10 miles, and an average of $800 a week.
