«THELEMA OF NATIONS»

La galerie Jérôme Poggi est heureuse de présenter la première exposition monographique
qu’elle consacre à Société Réaliste, marquant ainsi leur entrée dans la galerie. Intitulée
«Thelema of Nations», l’exposition réunit des oeuvres récentes de la coopérative
artistique fondée en 2004 par Ferenc Gróf (HU, 1972) et Jean-Baptiste Naudy (FR, 1982),
jouant du rapprochement entre l’utopie littéraire de Thélème, décrite pour la première fois
par Rabelais en 1534, et la réalité géopolitique des Nations Unies.
« Thelema of Nations » fait référence à la fameuse Abbaye de Thélème, première utopie littéraire
décrite par Rabelais en 1534 dans Gargantua. S’articulant autour de deux œuvres inédites,
l’exposition confronte l’idéal universaliste telle qu’il a été imaginé depuis Rabelais à la réalité
mondialiste telle qu’elle prend forme en ce début de XXIème siècle dans une institution comme
l’ONU en particulier. U.N. camouflage et Universal Anthem jouent des emblèmes identitaires
des nations membres de l’ONU, les soumettant à des transformations systématiques, révélant
l’antinomie qui réside dans des relations internationales partagées entre la peur et la raison, la
diplomatie et la guerre, l’intelligence et la technocratie.

Considérant la galerie comme un espace critique autant qu’économique, la galerie a invité
l’historien, critique d’art et curateur italien Matteo Lucchetti à s’associer au commissariat de
l’exposition. Cette invitation s’inscrit dans une série de collaborations que la galerie a instituée
il y a plus d’un an, proposant à des critiques et commissaires d’exposition de s’associer aux
expositions de la galerie pour en faire de véritables temps de réflexion et de spéculation. A ce
titre, l’exposition s’inscrit dans la saison «Nouvelles Vagues» organisée par le Palais de Tokyo
et le Comité professionnel des galeries d’art.

L’exposition se prolongera à la rentrée dans deux solo shows présentés à Istanbul en septembre,
dans le cadre de la première édition d’Art International Istanbul, et en octobre au Grand Palais
à Paris lors de la prochaine FIAC.

Société Réaliste est une coopérative artistique créée en 2004 par Ferenc Gróf (HU, 1972) et
Jean-Baptiste Naudy (FR, 1982).
La Galerie Nationale du Jeu de Paume (Paris), le Musée Ludwig de Budapest et le Musée
National d’Art Contemporain de Bucarest leur ont consacré une importante monographie
en 2011/2012. lls ont par ailleurs présenté des expositions personnelles à Varsovie (Lokal 30,
2012), à Istanbul (Akbank Sanat Art Center, 2011) à Ljubljana (Škuc Gallery, 2010) et à Munich
(Platform3, 2010).
Leur travail a également été montré dans de nombreuses expositions en France et à l’étranger:
récemment au ZKM de Karlsruhe et au Centre d’Art contemporain de Thessalonique en 2013,
au Künstlerhaus de Vienne, au CAC de la Nouvelle Orléans, au Parc Saint Léger (Pougues-lesEaux), à la Fondation Kadist (Paris), à la New School (New York) et au MUSAC (León) en 2012,
au MUMOK (Vienne), à Spike Island (Bristol), à Onomatopee (Eindhoven), à la NGBK (Berlin),
à la Fondation Pistoletto (Biella) et au San Francisco Art Institute, depuis 2010, ainsi qu’aux
biennales de Shanghai (2012), de Rennes (2010), de Lyon, d’Istanbul et d’Athènes (2009)

THELEMA OF NATIONS

The exhibition “Thelema of Nations” is first solo show at Jerome Poggi Gallery by the artistic
cooperative Société Réaliste, founded by Ferenc Grof and Jean Baptiste Naudy. The show attempts to connect a series of topics assessed by the collective in recent years, centring them
around the literary figure of the Abbey of Thelema (meaning “will” from Hellenic Greek), described for the first time in François Rabelais’ “Gargantua and Pantagruel” (1532) and brought
to fame in more recent times by Aleister Crowley, when he founded a real one for his sect
in Cefalù, Sicily, from 1920 to 1923, before being expelled from Italy by the fascist regime for
obscene behaviour. If Thelema is now known as a myth connected to the complex esoteric
cosmogony developed by the ambiguous figure of Crowley, the Abbey of Rabelais existed as
a classic utopia, where, differently from the modern utopia, the aim of it was a critical deconstruction of society. Described in one chapter as a place “ruled by the will of God” where its
inhabitants were living “according to their own free will and pleasure”, in the next one all the
limitations, boundaries and rules of inclusion are specified, making of it a ‘de facto’ representation of the Nation State as we know it.
It is within this discursive space that the works in the show resonate around this parallelism
in between the literary utopia of Thelema, existing around the deceiving manifestation of the
free will, and the geopolitical reality of United Nations, operating within a dynamic of exclusion
to maintain a supposed unity. Thelema and the Nations are here intended as two sides of the
same coin, where the currency is our society and its faces are explored through the layers of
representation that defines those sets of values, symbols,and beliefs that construct our imagery and our sense of belonging towards a political body.

Conceived as an homage to the Abbey, the show is articulated around three works that can
be referred both to Thelema’s doctrine, the United Nations cosmology or read as autonomous
pieces that speak for themselves. Let me try to suggest you one path. At the cross of Rabelais
and Crowley, it exists an utopian community that isolates itself within the perpetual repetition
of those elements that make them one people (Universal Anthem). This belief lead them to a
state of perpetual war where any possible visual mean is necessary to remind them on which
side to stand for (UN Camouflage), while since “the greatest loss of time” that they know “is
to count the hours” (F.Rabelais) they preferred to live in a time of an all-encompassing present
(Universal Time).
A Nation can be understood of as a unison, of culture, language, tradition, and as Adriana Cavarero writes in her book “For More than One Voice”, it is in the singing altogether of a national
anthem that the warm bond embedded in the national mysticism corrects the cold juridical
and rational tie of the State. In the sound piece Universal Anthem, Société Réaliste assembles
together the musical scores of all the countries belonging to the United Nations, as if universal
unison was given by the superimposition of all the anthems; and this is reflected also in the
flags of UN Camouflage, where the alliances between territories is to be found in the search
for a standardisation of the patterns that regulate the representative game of the flag, and its
political implications. In this show Société Réaliste are exposing the obsolescence of the modern tie between the Nation and the State, projecting it in the current post-national paradigm,
where nationalisms are fragmented and dangerously assuming fundamentalist shades. If the
task of our times, between globalisation and localisms, is to “think of new political categories
that cross the threshold of modernity” (A. Cavarero), the French collective seems to emphasize the risks of self-enclosure within an univocal narrative, while operating utopian gestures
in search of universal paths.

Matteo Lucchetti (né en 1984) est un historien de l’art, commissaire d’exposition indépendant
et critique d’art.
Ses principaux projets curatoriaux, sont entre autres: ‘Don’t embarrass the Bureau!’ (Lunds
Konsthalle, Lund, 2014); ‘Legally, Anna Scalfi Eghenter’ (Museo della Resistenza, Turin, 2013);
‘Enacting Populism’ (Kadist Foundation, Paris 2011-2012); ‘Practicing Memory’ (Cittadellarte,
Biella, 2010). Il est commissaire d’exposition du projet Visible (Pistoletto Foundation /
Fondazione Zegna) qui travaille à promouvoir la recherche sur les pratiques artistiques
socialement engagées dans un contexte global, notamment grâce à un prix décerné tous les
deux ans.

LA GALERIE JÉRÔME POGGI + OBJET DE PRODUCTION
La Galerie Jérôme Poggi a été créée en 2009 par le critique et historien de l’art Jérôme Poggi,
associé à ses débuts avec Peter Bertoux. Elle partage dans le quartier de la Gare du Nord un
espace de 200 m2 avec «Objet de Production», outil de production créé et dirigé par Jérôme
Poggi depuis 2004, dont l’objet est de faire apparaître et de promouvoir l’art contemporain au
sein de la société, par le biais de la commande privée et de la formation.
Convaincus que les mutations profondes que connaît la scène de l’art nécessitent de
nouveaux outils de production, de diffusion et de réflexion, la Galerie Jérôme Poggi et Objet
de Production ont décidé de s’associer pour créer ainsi un nouvel outil hybride, conjuguant
des modes d’action commerciaux et politiques, critiques et pédagogiques pour un nouveau
modèle économique pour l’art contemporain, et permettant d’explorer le potentiel d’innovation
d’une entreprise marchande de son temps. Agissant ainsi à tous les niveaux des processus
artistiques et culturels, l’action commune des deux structures permet d’investir aussi bien
l’espace public que privé.
La galerie Jérôme Poggi mène essentiellement un travail de prospection orienté d’abord vers la
jeune création contemporaine mais aussi vers des figures déjà plus repérées, voire historiques,
dont elle soutient le processus de reconnaissance aussi bien dans la sphère économique que
critique et historique, liant valeur économique et critique dans une équation globale où se
rejoignent spéculations intellectuelles et économiques.
