Strasbourg, August 2 nd 2012 PRESS RELEASE News from the Eastern Front! Great War Archaeological Finds in Alsace and Lorraine Autumn 2013 to August 2014 - Strasbourg Archaeological Museum (A research venture in partnership with the Pôle d’Archéologie Interdépartemental Rhénan) The archaeology of modern armed conflict, and particularly of the 1914-1918 World War, is a pioneering branch of archaeology opening up many new angles for historical research and bringing new understanding of the daily lives of front-line combatants. Highly significant results have been obtained over the last decade in Alsace and Lorraine, particularly from archaeological digs at fortified positions, including the recently excavated sites at Geispolsheim/Schwobenfeld in northern Alsace or Carspach/Kilianstollen in the south. The exhibition sets out to make an initial assessment of this research and will present a wide selection of the objects unearthed on sites both in Alsace and in Lorraine, as well as constructions and layouts investigated by archaeologists on or behind the front lines. It will also deal with a host of historical and archaeological issues, using a widely multidisciplinary approach, with illustrations from over twenty sites so far excavated in Alsace and Lorraine. Emphasis will be placed on the conservation of this vulnerable military heritage and on studies for the protection of these rapidly disappearing memorial sites, subject not only to redevelopment projects, but also to illegal pillaging due to their isolated locations. This event is part of the World War One Centuary Commemorations project, carried out in collaboration with the Rhine Interdepartmental Archaeology Centre, the Alsace and Lorraine Regional Archaeology Services and various other partners. Partnerships and joint PR programs are also envisaged with Strasbourg's other cultural agencies organizing exhibitions and events for this Centenary.
