De eerste was The Dialogue Series: iii. EN ‘How do I tell stories from here to the people who are here, with everything that I have become, with what I believe in aesthetically, politically and ethically?’ So maybe taking the time to be with people is a way to try and listen, to negotiate a way into their space, to find a little door that would make it possible for me to begin telling their stories and getting their attention. Not necessarily to get them to understand, that is not the point, but to just connect with it. In 2011, she presented her first solo At this Moment… at the Dance Umbrella festival in Johannesburg, with the musician Fritz Welch. Her latest creation, Darling with Igor Shyshko, was presented in Belgium (Leuven, Brussels…) and in September 2014 in South Africa (Cape Town and Johannesburg). Moya has been collaborating for several years with the JinXing Dance Theatre in China for which she created a work which premiered in 2013. Moya lives and works in Brussels. How does a mixed-race South African girl, brought up in a township in southern Johannesburg under Apartheid, become a dancer? How does a young poet, a student without a university in Kisangani, become a choreographer, or rather a storyteller on international stages? How do they negotiate the in-between, between two colours, between two countries, between two worlds, between two economies, between the urgency to tell stories about one’s country to the people of one’s country and the reality of an international career and economic demands? This conversation with Moya is the last in a series of dialogues with past or present figures, from The Dialogue Series: iii. Dinozord with a young dancer from Kinshasa, presented at KVS in 2007 to the most recent dialogue with the first truly Negro ballet, La création du monde (1923-2012), presented at KVS as part of the Kunstenfestivaldesarts in 2012. Moya, a coloured South African dancer, tells her story on stage, conversing by letter with Faustin, as the audience sees unfolding a life’s journey, a reflection on dance, the place of life in dance, choices, dead ends, questions, so many questions. Between a testament and a profession of faith, The Dialogue Series: IV Moya draws that in-between that inhabits us all at one time in our existence. FAUSTIN LINYEKULA – FAUSTIN LINYEKULA MOYA MICHAEL Born in Johannesburg, Moya trained in classical dancing under the supervision of Dianne Sparks. In 1997, she was awarded a Diploma in Contemporary and African dance at the Tshwane University in Pretoria. She received a three-year scholarship to train at P.A.R.T.S. under Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker. In 2000, she met Akram Khan and became one of the founding members of his Company and danced and toured performing various productions until 2005. In 2003, she developed her own work, Hatch, which premiered at the London South Bank Centre. That year, she also received the Standard Bank Young Artist Award at the National Arts festival in Grahamstown (South Africa). In 2005, Moya joined the Rosas dance company with which she is still working on a regular basis. Moya also worked with Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui on Babel(words) in 2010. Dancer, choreographer and director, Faustin Linyekula lives and works in Kisangani. After completing literary and theatrical studies in Kisangani, he settled in Nairobi in 1993 and founded the first contemporary dance company in Kenya, the Gàara company, in 1997 with Opiyo Okach and Afrah Tenambergen. In 2001, he was required to return to Zaïre which had become the Democratic Republic of Congo. The country had been torn by murderous strife for several years. He intended to stay a few weeks for a workshop and that stay became a life choice. Faustin set up the Studios Kabako, a structure for dance and visual theatre. He trained four dancers and with them he created Spectacularly Empty, a somewhat desperate log book about his return home to his native country. That is when his ongoing reflections started on history and a collective memory that is constantly used and abused, perverted and diverted by leaders in need of legitimacy, unable to think of the future, but seasoned in the subtle art of sleight-of-hand and conjuring. Faustin Linyekula readily defines himself as a storyteller. With his company, he imagined 11 pieces of work. In 2009, he created more more more… future, an Ndombolo rock opera, which toured in Europe, North America and Africa. The same year, he proposed staging Bérénice by Jean Racine for the Comédie française. Subsequently he adapted this text and brought it back to his territory in Kisangani, resulting in the performance Pour en finir avec Bérénice. In 2011, Faustin created his first solo work, Le Cargo, an intimate piece of work and one that takes him back to his first memories of dance in a little village in the Congo, which is still presented on international stages. In 2012, he presented La Création du monde 19232012 with 24 dancers of the Ballet de Lorraine, and then in 2013 with his company Drums and Digging. Faustin teaches regularly in Africa, in the United States and in Europe (P.A.R.T.S. / Brussels, CNDC Angers, Impulstanz / Vienna, Laban Centre / London…).
