Do you work with traumatized people ? Do you witness or share heartbreaking experiences day after day ? This experiential workshop is ideal for those who listen to the traumatic experiences of others and find those experiences to be traumas that burden them as well. Vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue affect helping professionals’ physical, psychological and spiritual health as they observe and interact in daily traumatic accounts or react to the traumatic situations of others. Vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue not only steal away a helping professional’s passion, but also deteriorates their health. Many of us have unknowingly experienced it. It manifests as a sense of helplessness and ultimately leads to burnout and depression if disregarded. During this experiential workshop a variety of music therapy techniques will be used to help participants identify and explore their vicarious traumatization, burnout, stress and resources. 1. Introduction of Vicarious Traumatization. What is it ? What are the signs ? What contributes to it ? 2. Introduction au traumatisme par procuration. Qu’est-ce que c’est ? Quels en sont les signes ? Qu’est-ce qui contribue à son développement ? 2. This workshop is designed specifically for these therapists who are skilled and motivated by their profession and are seeking guidance to increase their profile, profession and clinical portfolio. YOU WILL LEARN HOW TO : • Effectively market yourself and your service • Demonstrate passion and commitment to your profession • Present your profession and your personal skill set in 5-minutes or less • Create an in-service that is artistic, engaging, and uplifting. • Techniques on how to get to know and understand your potential client and what they want to hear….not what you want to tell them. • Maintain critical relationships that will support your efforts in generating awareness and profile of our profession. • Understand what they mean when they say “we don’t have any money”. Jennifer will also detail her KEY principles to help you position yourself well in the expressive arts marketplace. This workshop will stay focused on the heart of the work - our clients - what we must do if we are going to motivate or ignite strong interest and passion into what we have to offer them. 8 WEDNESDAY MERCREDI MAY 9:00 - 16:00 EDUC 1003 MAI KIM BARTHEL, BMR, OTR BECOMING A BEHAVIORAL DETECTIVE DEVENIR UN DÉTECTIVE DU COMPORTEMENT This one-day workshop is designed for therapists and educators who work collaboratively towards the enhancement of a child’s learning, organized behaviour, communication, interaction, joint attention, and modulation using sensory processing intervention. Ultimately, the piece is about the passage from denial to acceptance, not just for the parent of an autistic child, but any parent, making the transition from clinging to her expectations of motherhood, to the realities of life with her particular child. It is funny, heart-breaking and both entertaining and informative. A question and answer period by the playwright and our own Lana Wilkinson will follow the play. 20 FRIDAY, VENDREDI MAY 10:30 - 11:15 10 MAI EDUC LOUNGE RESEARCH POSTER DISPLAY / EXPOSITION D’AFFICHES DE RECHERCHE This year’s conference will feature a Research Poster Display where music therapists, students, educators and/or other professionals will be exhibiting original research that is directly or indirectly related to the field of music therapy.
