The intervention in the fountain at Glendon College follows two public-fountain interventions in
Chile. As a symbol, the fountain represents purity and idealized nature. In European tradition it is a
symbol of settlement and horticultural fertility. It represents the well from which we all draw water,
and because of this it is most often placed in gardens and public spaces. This symbolism has
increasingly become a form of denial in the face of ecological degradation.
L’intervention à la fontaine du collège Glendon fait suite à deux interventions dans des fontaines
publiques au Chili. Comme symbole, la fontaine représente la pureté et la nature idéalisée. Dans la
tradition européenne, elle est le symbole du village et de la fertilité horticole. Elle représente le puits
duquel nous tirons l’eau. Voilà pourquoi elle est souvent placée dans les jardins des espaces publics.
Aujourd’hui, elle symbolise de plus en plus une forme d’affirmation face à la dégradation écologique.
La intervención en la fuente del Glendon College, es la continuación de las intervenciones en dos
fuentes públicas en Chile. Como símbolo, la fuente representa pureza y naturaleza idealizada. En la
tradición Europea, esta es un símbolo de asentamiento y fertilidad hortícola. Esta representa el
manantial, desde el cual todos obtenemos el agua, y por esto, es que se sitúa más comunmente, en
jardines y espacios públicos. Este simbolismo se ha convertido crecientemente en una forma de
afirmación frente a la degradación ecológica.

Gene Threndyle has been active in the arts in Toronto for almost 20 years. He worked for many years
at Open Studio and was a founding member of Red Head Gallery. He has exhibited work across
Canada, in Europe, and in Russia. He has been part of the Artists’ Gardens at Harbourfront Centre
since 1995 and the native plant gardens at Dufferin Grove Park in Toronto for as many years. In 1999,
he built the Marsh Fountain in Dufferin Grove Park with the support of a community arts grant from
the Ontario Arts Council.
Gene Threndyle est actif dans le domaine des arts à Toronto depuis presque 20 ans. Il a travaillé durant
plusieurs années à l’Open Studio et est un membre fondateur de la Red Head Gallery. Il a exposé au
Canada, en Europe et en Russie. Il participe aux « Artists’ Gardens » du Harbourfront Centre depuis
1995 et des jardins de plantes autochtones du parc Dufferin Grove à Toronto depuis autant d’années.
En 1999, il a construit la fontaine Marsh dans le parc Dufferin Grove avec l’appui d’une bourse pour
les arts communautaires du Conseil des arts de l’Ontario.
Gene Threndyle ha participado activamente en las artes en Toronto, por casi 20 años. El trabajó por
muchos años en Open Studio, y fue miembro fundador de Read Head Gallery. Gene ha expuesto su
obra a través de Canadá, en Europa y Rusia. El ha sido parte del Jardín de los Artistas en Harbourfront
Centre desde 1995; asimismo Gene ha participado, por muchos años, en los jardines de plantas nativas
en el Dufferin Grove Park en Toronto. En 1999, construyó el Marshall Fountain en Dufferin Grove
Park con el apoyo de una beca de arte comunitario del Consejo de Arte de Ontario.
