De l’importance du commissaire
d’une biennale. Quand il se plante,
cela donne une édition où la majorité
des œuvres courent plus après les
modes qu’après le sens. La Biennale de
Montréal 2016 repose sur les épaules du
commissaire Philippe Pirotte. À lui (et
au comité consultatif) de départager le
bon grain de l’ivraie, de privilégier les
créations qui répondent à une nécessité
intérieure plutôt qu’aux normes du
marché. Le spécialiste a sélectionné
une cinquantaine d’artistes, de
plusieurs pays et techniques, qu’il
réunit sous le titre Le grand balcon. On
ne ratera pas ce rendez-vous.
The curator sets the tone of a biennale.

will be modish rather than meaningful.
The Biennale de Montréal 2016 is resting
on the shoulders of curator Philippe
Pirotte. It is up to him (and the advisory
committee) to separate the wheat from
the chaff, to select works that respond to
an inner imperative rather than market
trends. This specialist has chosen some
50 artists, hailing from a number of
countries and working in a number of
techniques, and assembled them under
the title Le Grand Balcon [The Grand
Balcony]. Not to be missed.
En 1966, on inaugurait le métro
de Montréal. Pour célébrer ce
50e anniversaire, Kent Nagano et
l’Orchestre symphonique de Montréal
mettent sur rails deux créations
mondiales — signées José Evangelista
et Robert Normandeau — ainsi que
Ein Heldenleben (« Une vie de héros »),
de Richard Strauss. Également
au programme : le Concerto pour
violoncelle en la mineur, op. 29, de
Schumann. Le violoncelle, quel drôle
d’instrument : un corps de femme
avec une voix d’homme ! Quand Truls
Mørk, soliste invité, le pose entre
ses cuisses et le fait vibrer, toutes les
fenêtres s’ouvrent.
The Montréal metro was inaugurated
in 1966. To celebrate its 50th
anniversary, Kent Nagano and the
Montréal Symphony Orchestra will
launch two world premieres of works
by composers José Evangelista
and Robert Normandeau. Also on
the program: Richard Strauss’s Ein
Heldenleben [A Hero’s Life] and
Schumann’s Concerto for Cello in
A minor, op. 29. The cello is a strange
instrument, with the body of a woman
and the voice of a man. When guest
soloist Truls Mørk holds it between his
thighs and makes it vibrate, windows
fly open.

chorégraphiées par le directeur
artistique Paul Lightfoot et sa
complice et conseillère artistique Sol
León, et In the Event, de la Canadienne
Crystal Pite, réclamée partout sur

After an absence of some 20 years,
the Nederlands Dans Theater is
returning to Montréal. One of the best
companies in the world, combining
technique, virtuosity and mental
flexibility, this iconic Dutch troupe
was shaped for 30 years (until
2004) by Czech choreographer Jirí
Kylián. They will perform three
pieces: Sehnsucht and Stop-Motion,
choreographed by artistic director
Paul Lightfoot and his colleague and
artistic advisor Sol Léon, and In the
Event, by internationally renowned
Canadian choreographer Crystal Pite.
