BIOGRAPHY
Born in the 80’s, Nine Antico is a French illustrator and
cartoonist. She began her career with the fanzine, Rock This
Way, combining her two passions: rock and illustration. Her
first book, Le goût du paradis, has been acclaimed by
journalists and was nominated for the First Album Prize at the
Angoulême Festival 2009. Her illustrations have been exhibited
at Point Éphèmère and by the Arts Factory. Antico’s latest
book, Tonight, was published in France by Les Requins
Marteaux in 2012. She currently writes for several magazines
including Nova, Trax, and Muteen and is working on a new
book inspired by a residency she did in Los Angeles in 2011.
Her graphic novel Coney Island Baby, a marvellous cross
between pinup Betty Page and Linda Lovelace, will be
launched in the U.S. by Slate Bank Books in October 2012.

Nine Antico is available for conferences in English or French, Q&A, interviews, and book
signing to promote the US launch of her graphic novel Coney Island Baby. Recent
drawings from her new work for children, Quatre filles, are available for exhibition.
SUGGESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION TOPICS FROM THE AUTHOR:
How I worked to build the « Coney Island Baby » scenario.
Why I choose these two icons: Linda Lovelace and Bettie Page as part of my reflection on
women and how they deal with their powers of seduction. The choices they made that
followed them for a lifetime, and that they eventually deny. How I picked certain
moments of their lives to illustrate my thoughts.
How do you deal with reality and fiction as an author?
How books, movies, photos and personal influences have shaped my perception of America
and how this becomes a central theme in my current book: « Autel California », based
on the story of rock music in the 60’s and 70’s in Los Angeles. The main character is
inspired by the famous groupie, Pamela des Barres, whom I met last autumn, as well as
journalists, photographers and people who were part of that amazing scene.

« A deux décennies de distance, elles ont incarné à leur corps consentant, et avec l'éclat
lumineux du scandale, une sexualité au féminin très neuve. L'une, Betty Page, est devenue la
plus célèbre pin-up de papier des années 50 ; l'autre, Linda Lovelace, la première superstar
instantanée du cinéma porno, au début des années 70. Betty rêvait d'un destin de star à
Hollywood, Linda de « jouir sans entraves » (slogan d'époque) : l'une et l'autre, si libres
soient-elles dans leur tête, et pionnières à leur façon, restent, dans le regard de Nine Antico,
les cobayes candides, les icônes aussi séduisantes qu'involontaires d'une histoire qui allait les
dépasser et que, plus tard, elles renieraient... Sans doute fallait-il être une femme pour
raconter - et comprendre -, sans fausse pudeur, crûment au besoin, mais aussi avec une
irradiante empathie, le parcours chaotique et finalement piégé de ces deux jeunes femmes

A 29 ans, l'auteur, dont ce Coney Island Baby est seulement le deuxième livre, montre une
impressionnante maîtrise du récit, décrivant ces deux trajectoires de l'ombre à la lumière et
retour en une succession de séquences croisées où le sexe n'est qu'une facette d'un tableau
plus large. Excellente dialoguiste, Nine Antico capte de son trait fin et étonnamment sensuel,
dans une mise en scène dépouillée et pourtant d'une précision documentaire immédiate, un
écho fascinant de cette Amérique puritaine crispée sur ses bonnes moeurs hypocrites, et son
corollaire, une industrie du sexe, de Playboy au porno, en pleine euphorie. »
