L
es créations de Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmain
sont imprégnées de l’esthétique de la culture
iranienne dont elle est issue. Inspirée par l’architecture
de son pays, sa géométrie et ses motifs islamiques
traditionnels et par des techniques comme la peinture
sous verre, la mosaïque en miroir et la sculpture en
bas-relief, Farmanfarmain revisite et adapte ces
formes pour créer des œuvres d’une étonnante
originalité
grand magasin Bonwit Teller, où elle a côtoyé Andy
Warhol. Retournée en Iran dans les années 1960, elle
s’est forgée une réputation d’artiste et a fait l’objet
d’expositions majeures à Téhéran, Paris, Venise et New
York. Après la révolution islamique de 1979, elle s’est
réfugiée à New York pour ne retourner en Iran qu’en
2000, où elle travaille encore aujourd’hui. Dans son
esthétique particulière, elle traduit le langage pictural
de la Perse dans des formes modernes, associant les
techniques de la mosaïque en miroir et de la peinture
sous verre avec des styles abstraits contemporains.
Ses installations chatoyantes relèvent tout à la fois
des motifs islamiques, du symbolisme soufi, de la
symétrie géométrique et de l’artisanat traditionnel.
La mosaïque en miroir, qui caractérise ses œuvres les
plus célèbres, s’inspire d’une technique décorative
iranienne connue sous le nom de aineh-kari et
remontant au XVIe siècle (à l’époque où les miroirs,
qui s’étaient brisés durant le transport entre l’Europe
et la Perse, étaient recyclés pour créer des panneaux
architecturaux décoratifs).

Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmain, l’une des doyennes
de l’art iranien, peut se glorifier d’une carrière
qui couvre plus de cinquante ans. Elle a passé de
nombreuses années à New York, pour y étudier
les beaux-arts, puis l’illustration de mode dans le
