Map of Boulogne :
IN AND AROUND
BOULOGNE-SUR-MER
Boulogne-sur-Mer, in a few words :
From roman times Boulogne was established as a major
port offering easy access to England. Julius Caesar
stayed a while and Napoléon set up camp here too
before setting his sights on Austerlitz.
Boulogne is France’s premier fishing port with a flotilla
of 195 boats from small traditional vessels to large
industrial trawlers. It is no surprise therefore that
Boulogne is home to Nausicaà, Europe’s largest Sea
Discovery Centre.
Perched on a hill, the old town with its cobbled streets
and ramparts boasts a magnificent cathedral and 13th
château. “Ville d’Art et d’Histoire”, Boulogne enjoys
national recognition for wealth of cultural heritage it
has to offer.

The Upper Town houses a 12th century Belfry within
superb 13th century Ramparts which encircle the
cathedral, and the Château. The Château-Musée was
built in the 13th century. Now it exhibits a major
collection of greek vases, Eskimo masks, and Egyptians
items. The imposing Notre Dame Cathedral of
Boulogne was built in the 18th century on the Medieval
crypt.
It is undoubtedly Napoleon who really left his mark on
the town. Situated on the high ground above a small
valley, you can discover the Colonne de la Grande
Armée, 54m high, it immortilizes the Camp of Boulogne
which was a real threat for England from 1803 to 1805.
You can continue to follow in Napoleon’s footsteps, if
you visit the Palais Imperial which was the
headquarters of the Grande Armée or visit the
Poudrière, it was the Powder Magazine of the Camp of
Boulogne.
