Lieu de culte dès l’Antiquité celte, Agaune devient
Saint-Maurice par son baptême dans le sang des martyrs
thébains, au tournant du IVe siècle. Fondée en 515, l’Abbaye
est le plus ancien monastère chrétien d’Occident dont
l’activité ne s’est jamais interrompue sur les lieux de sa
fondation. La Laus Perennis, louange perpétuelle, des
chanoines de Saint-Maurice se poursuit, jour après jour,
depuis quinze siècles.

Lors de votre visite, vous croiserez peut-être l’un des 40
chanoines de la Communauté. Les chanoines de l’Abbaye
suivent la règle de Saint Augustin et sont liés par les trois vœux
de chasteté, pauvreté et obéissance. Les chanoines réguliers
se distinguent des moines par le fait qu’ils assument une
charge pastorale au sein d’une église paroissiale, alors que les
moines vivent retirés du monde.

Agaunum (Dorf am Felsen) war bereits in der keltischen Antike
eine Kultstätte und wurde durch die Bluttaufe der thebäischen
Märtyrer, gegen Ende des 3. Jahrhunderts, zu Saint-Maurice.
Im Jahr 515 gründete der König Sigismund von Burgund die Abtei.
Sie ist das älteste christliche Kloster des Abendlandes, das seit
seiner Gründung keinen Unterbruch kennt.
Die « Laus Perennis » - das ewige Gotteslob der Chorherren von
Saint-Maurice - steigt seit 15 Jahrhunderten Tag für Tag, wie
Weihrauch vor Gottes Angesicht.

A place of worship dating back to Celtic antiquity, Agaune became
Saint-Maurice through its baptism in the blood of the Theban
martyrs at the turn of the 4th century. Founded in 515, the Abbey is
the oldest Christian monastery in the western world and has
remained active without interruption on the site of its foundation.
The Laus Perennis, the perpetual prayer of the canons of
Saint-Maurice, has continued day after day for fifteen centuries.

Vielleicht begegnen Sie bei Ihrem Besuch einem der 40 Chorherren der Gemeinschaft. Die Chorherren der Abtei befolgen die
Regel des heiligen Augustinus und legen die drei Gelübde ab :
Armut, Gehorsam und Keuschheit.
Sie sind nicht Mönche die in einem Kloster, abgeschieden von der
Welt leben. Die Chorherren sind eine Gemeinschaft von Priestern
mit ihren pastoralen Aufgaben. Sie haben Pfarreien, ein Kollegium,
Missionen und andere seelsorgerische Tätigkeiten. Sie leben und
beten jedoch gemeinsam, wie Mönche.

During your visit you will perhaps come across one of the Community’s 40 canons. The canons of the Abbey follow the rule of St
Augustin and are bound by the three vows of chastity, poverty and
obedience. Regular canons are distinct from monks insofar as they
assume pastoral duties within a parish church, whereas monks live
secluded from the world.
