The Marquis de Sade’s father and uncle were born in this château in a little town at the foot
of Mont Ventoux - and though the Marquis preferred Paris he often stayed here. It’s now
a family hotel with frondy palms in the garden and a beautiful terrace for dinner; the chef
has worked in Michelin-starred restaurants and is keen to win his own.

PROVANS - Kalmalı Chateau de Mazan Place Napoléon
18. yüzyıl başlarında inşa edilen Chateau de Mazan, Marquis de Sade’ın bizzat rol aldığı
oyunlara da ev sahipliği yapmış. Yıllar boyu el değiştirdikten sonra, 2001’de Lhérmie ailesi
tarafından satın alınarak bir otele dönüştürülmüş. Relais&Chateaux’nun civardaki
gözdelerinden biri olan Chateau de Mazan’ın yeşillikler içindeki ferah bahçesi ve terası
insana nerede olduğunu unutturacak cinsten. Otelin koridorlarında bazen biraz ürkütücü
görünen, insanın gözünün içine bakan eski portreler yer alıyor. Yaz aylarında ısıtma sistemi
çalışmadığından geceleri odalar biraz soğuk olabiliyor. Resepsiyonun yanındaki küçük
Masada duran çevre kasabalardaki yöresel pazar listesine göz atmakta yarar var. Kahvaltı
dahil odalar 115 Euro’dan başlıyor.
Yemeli L’ingénue Place Napoléon
Chateau de Mazan’ın üzerine çok düştüğü gurme restoranı L’ingénue, yetenekli şef Franck
Pujol’a emanet edilmiş. Şefin taze ürünlere düşkünlüğü, yerel üreticileri desteklemelerini
sağlamış: Örneğin çilekleri Monsieur Charasse’tan, kuşkonmazları Monsieur Sultana’dan
almaya özen gösteriyorlar.
Pujol’un düşkün olduğu bir diğer nokta da sıcak-soğuk ve tatlı-tuzlu kontrastları.
Wasabili, koyu kıvamlı bezelye çorbası; karides tartar ve kırmızı şarap konfit nuar en
popüler cevaplar. Cumartesi ve pazar öğle servisi 12.00-14.00 arasında. Düşük sezonda
pazartesi ve salı; mayıs, haziran ve eylülde salı kapalı. Temmuz ve ağustosta her gün 19.3021.30 arası açık. İçki hariç yemek 60Euro. Rezervasyon gerekli.

… Mazan is a pretty little town about halfway between Mont Ventoux and the Montes de
Vaucluse. There has been a village on this site since Roman times and today it is beautifully
preserved and protected by its circled wall of buildings dating from the 14th century. The

old village gates give to a maze of ancient narrow streets too narrow for cars, containing
ancient houses, churches and fountains. Arguably the most famous building in the village
is the Chateau de Mazan hotel, one of the many former homes of the Sade family (yes, as
in the Marquis de Sade), built in about 1720. Although the Marquis spent most of his life
in Paris, he often stayed at the Château and in 1772 he held what would become the first
theatre festival in France there. The house remained in the Sade family until 1850 but today
it is a luxury hotel, and this is where we headed at the end of a long day.
Entering the hotel still feels like entering a grand but slightly bohemian aunt’s home, with
lofty ceilings and an eclectic collection of objets scattered throughout the public rooms on
the ground floor. We were given a quick tour of the slightly louche yet cosy lounge bar and
the bright and airy dining room overlooking the garden before heading up to our room.
The hotel comprises just 25 rooms, ranging from standard rooms to garden suites with
their own terraces. Ours was a HUGE junior suite on the top floor, all high ceilings,
gleaming varnished terracotta floors, a giant bed, a jacuzzi bath, and views over the village
rooftops as well as into the garden and swimming pool. Tempting as though it was to stay
in the room and take advantage of the working wifi (!) it took us about 30 seconds to get
locate our swimming costumes in the suitcases and head for the pool, G&T’s in hand. I
can’t express how lovely this was – the pool is large enough to swim proper laps and is
surrounded by plentiful loungers and deckchairs scattered across the lush green lawns.
Lying on my lounger and staring at the sky I also realized that we were lying under the
biggest mulberry tree I had seen since childhood – truly gorgeous. I could have stayed
there a week.
But alas – duty called. We had a dinner date to meet with the lovely Valerie from Vaucluse
Tourism in the hotel’s Ingenue restaurant – not just any dinner, but a cherry-themed
dinner. Since March 2007, chef Franck Pujol has been in charge of the kitchen at Chateau
de Mazan. A native of Brittany, he is a master of combining the flavours of the earth and
the sea and sums up his philosophy of cooking in one sentence: “to give pleasure”. Meals
are prepared only from high-quality fresh products supplied by small local producers. ….

Der Marquis kam stets nur zu Besuch auf den Familiensitz der de Sades. Er selbst
bevorzugte Schloss Lacoste weiter südlich in der Provence, das inzwischen Pierre Cardin
gehört. Das “Château de Mazan” ist heute ein romantisches Hotel mit GroBem Garten,
Pool, alten Böden und ausgesuchten Möbeln aus ganz Frankreich, aber neuem Jacuzzi.
Kein Zimmer sieht aus wie das andere.
Frédéric Lhermie, der Hoteldirektor, kennt sich aus mit de Sades Leben, er weiB, dass de
Sade nicht nu rein Lüstling war, der aus der Provence fliehen musste, nachdem er ein
Aphrodisiakum an einer Prostituierten in Marseille erprobte. De Sade war Philosoph, und

er veranstaltete ein Theaterfestival in den Räumen des heutigen Restaurants, in dem man
unter anderem Gemüse von den umliegenden Äckern isst. Nach der Französischen
Revolution wurde das Château Offizierskasino, Altenheim, Jesuitenschule und vor zehn
Jahren schlieBlich Hotel – das hätte dem Kirchenfeind sicherlich am ehesten gefallen. Die
Gäste kommen nicht seinetwegen, der Star in Mazan ist der Mont Ventoux. Man besteigt
ihn, man fährt hinauf mit dem Fahrrad oder Motorrad oder man fährt auf ihm Ski.

Vins, Villages emblématiques (Vaison-la-Romaine ; Gordes ; Isle sur la Sorgue…) et
silhouette imposante du « Géant de Provence », le Mont Ventoux en toile de fond…
…. Une belle adresse !

Sur les Traces du Marquis de Sade pour une Escapade coquine et libertine. Au pied du
Mont Ventoux, cette belle demeure patricienne fut la résidence du Marquis par qui le
scandale arriva. Aujourd’hui, elle offre une hôtellerie de standing où l’on est accueilli avec
beaucoup de gentillesse. Décorées dans un esprit maison particulière, les 30 chambres sont
de véritables havres d’intimité, certaines avec terrasse fleurie ou jardin privatif, d’autres avec
douche-hammam ou vue imprenable sur les toits ensoleillés du village. Avec sa végétation
aux senteurs incomparables, sa rotonde où l’on peut somnoler à l’ombre des muriers, son
olivier centenaire…le parc invite à la détente et la piscine offre fraîcheur et bien-être. Le
restaurant, baptisé l’Ingénue, est orchestré par Franck Pujol. Sa cuisine, généreuse et
gourmande, est un brin sophistiquée, mais on ne peut guère tenir rigueur au jeune Chef de
vouloir faire des arpèges dans un cadre comme celui-ci.
GM+ Avec la proximité d’Avignon, Gordes, l’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, paradis des chineurs, et la
route des vins, le choix des activités est infini.

Entzückend, charmant, romantisch – drei Attribute das Château de Mazan am FuBe des
Mont Ventoux beschreiben. Doch, wer jetzt an Rüschen und Schnickschnack denkt, der
irrt. Klar und auf das Produkt reduziert, geschmackvoll, einladend und liebevoll verzaubert
das vor neun Jahren komplett renovierte Château seine Gäste.
Auch der Service geht einen eigenen Weg. Dominique Peters – ihres Zeichens eine Maître
d’hotel – weiB, was ein Gast braucht, um sich wie ein König zu fülhen.

Solch charmante Landhotels gibt es einige. GröBtenteils abseits der Haupt strecken. Sie
liegen etwa in alten Schlössern wie dem des Marquis de Sade in Mazan. In dem Städtchen
südlich des Mont Ventoux, des « provenzalischen Fujiyama » (an dessen kahlen Hängen
vor allem ambitionierte Mountain Biker ihr Urlaubsglück finden), lässt einen das hübsche
Château de Mazan mit seinen verspielten Antiquitäten und dem weitläufigen Park den
deutschen Alltag vergessen.

aan de voet van de berg Mont Ventoux en is omringd door prachtige groene tuinen met
eeuwenoude olijfbomen. Mazan ligt op 30 km rijden van Avignon, waar ook de treinen
vertrekken. De 25 kamers van het Château zijn ingericht met oog voor detail en hebben
stuk voor stuk een persoonlijk karakter.

Pour Frédéric Lhermie, la région est aussi de plus en plus prisée par les amateurs de bons
produits du terroir et les personnes en quête d'un monde rural authentique. Ce jeune
Lillois, affable et passionné, a restauré avec sa mère le château du marquis de Sade, à
Mazan, pour le transformer en un 4 étoiles de charme. En toute discrétion, sont venus s'y
ressourcer PPDA, André Dussollier ou encore Michel Drucker.«Pour ceux qui connaissent
la Provence, la découverte du Ventoux est un coup de cœur, assure l'hôtelier. On
s'émerveille de son authenticité, de ses prix abordables, de la richesse de ses paysages. On
vient et revient, délaissant souvent le Luberon, jugé trop lisse et surfait.»
Car à l'origine de la discrétion du mont Ventoux, il y a la richesse de son terroir. Les
agriculteurs et les viticulteurs cèdent rarement cette terre, qu'ils valorisent si bien. La truffe
du Ventoux, la lavande du pays de Sault, les fraises et les asperges de Carpentras, les cerises
de Venasque, des vins remarquables colorent les étals des marchés.
Ils préservent aussi les villages et les paysages. Quel délice de passer sans transition des
vieilles pierres d'un village perché aux champs de vignes et de lavandes!
