INTRODUCTION to the 2005 SUPPLEMENT
The present author first produced “A Bibliography of the Bayonet” in January 2000. (It is currently out
of print.) Since that time, much additional material has been published and a number of pre-2000
references have come to light which were not included in the original Bibliography. It therefore seems
appropriate to publish a Supplementary Bibliography at this point in time, exactly five years on from
the appearance of the original volume.
The period 2000-2005 has seen the publication of some 30 new books on the history of the bayonet,
or on bayonet identification. Some authors have chosen to produce general works on world
bayonets, resulting in the appearance of pioneering volumes in the Russian language and a
continuation of the controversial series by the French author J.-P. Vial. Others have concentrated on
narrower fields of study, publishing books on, for example, plug bayonets, Kalashnikov rifle
bayonets, German etched-blade 'Dress Bayonets' or British spike bayonets. A major three-volume
series has been produced in Poland on the bayonets of that country, and the identification of German
service bayonets has been particularly well covered.
It has proved possible to obtain details of many more military bayonet fighting or training manuals,
adding to a seemingly endless and bewildering series of instructional booklets. Such publications are
here sub-divided into manuals exclusively concerned with the bayonet, followed by listings of more
general training manuals which contain chapters or sections on the bayonet. Manuals are listed
nation by nation within each of these two catagories.
A steady stream of magazine and journal articles has continued to be produced, with the two
specialised serial publications, the Journal of the Society of American Bayonet Collectors and the
Journal de l'Association Française des Collectionneurs de Baïonnettes, proving to be particularly rich
sources of interesting material.
The widespread availability of digital technology has resulted in some researchers choosing to
disseminate their work through the medium of CD-ROM's rather than conventional printed books.
Significant studies of Turkish bayonets and United States Bayonet Patents have for example been
produced by such means in recent years. Appendix A covers material of this kind.
The articles by Charles Dangré, the Director of the Musée Royale de l'Armée in Brussels, published
in the Museum's journal entitled `Carnet de la Fourragère ' during the years 1924 to 1931 have long
been recognised as a seminal study in bayonet identification, and particularly important to the study
of German `Ersatz' models of the First World War. The titles, subject matter and numbering of these
articles are somewhat confusing to say the least, so a complete listing of Dangré's work is included
here as Appendix B.

PART 3 - MAGAZINE & JOURNAL ARTICLES
INTRODUCTION Entries are in the alphabetical order of authors' surnames, and articles by each
author are chronological within each section of the Bibliography.
The listings are sub-divided to make subject matter easier to locate. The initial sections contain
General material which is not concerned with the bayonets of any one particular nation. The
`Bayonet Collecting' Section contains entries on collecting techniques, valuation, restoration etc., as
well as a few articles on bayonet collectors themselves. General articles on specific classes of
bayonets - Plug Bayonets, Socket Bayonets, Sword Bayonets etc., follow.
The bulk of the entries are however arranged country by country, subject countries being in
alphabetical order. Within each national division are sub-divisions according to the type of bayonet
concerned. These vary from country to country according to the subject matter of articles which have
been written, but may include General: Bayonet Markings: Plug Bayonets: Socket Bayonets: Sword
Bayonets: Knife Bayonets: Spike Bayonets etc., with perhaps extra catagories for Fencing Bayonets
or even Toy Bayonets where appropriate.
Some articles appear more than once in the list. For example, an article comparing Belgian and
Turkish bayonet models can be found in both the Belgian and Turkish sections. Similarly, an article
on Indian blade markings might appear in both British Colonial and Indian sections.
The division between sword bayonet and knife bayonet is a difficult one and perhaps arbitrary. Here,
the sword bayonet catagory includes early hirschfänger-style weapons and later [typically 19th
Century] bayonets which usually fit muzzle loading or black-powder breech-loading single-shot
firearms. Knife bayonets may not be much shorter, but are generally 20th Century issues fitting
small-bore repeating firearms. The French Modèle1866 Chassepot is hence an example of a classic
sword bayonet, the British Pattern 1907 a knife bayonet. Hybrid sword-socket bayonets appear in a
separate sub-division.
In some instances, the subject matter of an article is not obvious from its title. In such cases, where
possible, the subject matter is given in square brackets and in italic script after the title.

NOTE
The series is unfinished. There is no text coverage of the conversions of Austrian and Dutch
bayonets shown in Plate VIII, Figs. 134 -142, as Dangré died in 1931.
An undated reprint of Articles 2 - 10 was produced in Belgium, possibly in the 1950's. The
layout of the eight plates is altered, but the original French text remains unchanged. The
reprint was produced by Club Winchester 66, Collectionneurs D'Armes Anciennes
[Verzamelaars Oude Wapens], Wittestraat 50, 8710 Heule, België.
