First Race in 2009, and First Victory Too!
Nyck De Vries started the 2009 season in the highly competitive WSK series just like he did last year: with a success! On 8
February, at the La Conca track (Southern Italy), the Dutch kartman conquered the KF3 final after a very intense fight against
several other competitors. Winner of the WSK in 2008, Nyck is already at the top of the Championship provisional ranking…

he time has already come to draw the first conclusions: the hard winter training underwent by Nyck De Vries is bearing its fruits, the Zanardi-Parilla equipment is proving once
again to a valuable resource and the Dutch driver has showed again excellent performances, especially when “the going has got tough”. But of course, the 2009 season has just
begun and Nyck knows he will have to repeat those good results soon, because his competitors are
ready to battle him.
“This year, the WSK series has again gathered the best international drivers, so it was fantastic to prevail
in the first race of the season”, Nyck commented. However, the Dutch driver had a really difficult time
during the race, because he was forced to begin on the outer side of the track, at each of the six
starts! “On the La Conca track, more than elsewhere, it is really a handicap when you cannot start from
the good position” said his team manager, “because it is hard to get the right trajectory when the first
bend comes. Nyck often lost ground at the start, so he was forced to do his best to catch up while avoiding collisions”.
Despite this handicap, Nyck won a heat, was second in another one and set the best time in lap twice,
thereby providing even more evidence of this burst of speed. Indeed, he climbed from 15th to 8th
place at the end of the qualifying phase. “In the pre-final, my new tyres took a little while to warm up
and I had to wait a few laps before the equipment could show its full potential”. Russian Daniel Kvyat literally flew away in front of him, but Nyck did not give up and finally reached the second place.

At the start of the final, he was forced again to drive on the outer line and found himself on the
dirty side of the track. Although he lost a few places, Nyck was determined to begin his battle. He
nearly doubled a driver at each lap, so he soon reached Kvyat (who appears to be his major rival
for 2009), before gaining an advantage of almost two seconds! Now, more than ever, Nyck De Vries
is the candidate to his own succession in the WSK, and will logically be part of the group of
favourites on 22 February, at the 14th edition of the Winter Cup in Lonato, which remains the great
international classic of season debut. Nyck will race near home, since this
young Dutch driver has recently moved to Brescia, in Northern Italy. He is
now closer to the Zanardi factory and will be able to hold many more private tests. Very promising…

Première course 2009, première victoire!
Nyck De Vries a commencé la très relevée série WSK 2009 de la même manière que la précédente: par un succès ! Le 8 février
dans le sud de l’Italie, sur le circuit de La Conca, le kartman hollandais a gagné la finale KF3 de haute lutte après avoir dû
dépasser plusieurs concurrents. Vainqueur de la WSK 2008, Nyck s’est déjà installé en tête du championnat 2009…

éjà, des premières conclusions s’imposent: la préparation hivernale rigoureuse à
laquelle s’est astreint Nyck De Vries a porté ses fruits, le matériel Zanardi-Parilla apparaît
de nouveau comme une arme rigoureuse et le pilote hollandais a encore su élever son
niveau de jeu dans les moments les plus difficiles. Mais bien sûr, la saison 2009 ne fait
que commencer et Nyck sait qu’il va falloir confirmer au plus tôt, car ses adversaires l’attendent au
tournant.
“Cette année, la série WSK regroupe de nouveau les meilleurs pilotes internationaux et c’est vraiment
génial de s’imposer dès la première course de la saison”, commentait Nyck. Pourtant, sa course fut
réellement difficile à gérer, car le Hollandais a dû s’élancer du côté extérieur de la piste à chacun de
ses six départs ! “Sur le circuit de La Conca plus qu’ailleurs, c’est vraiment un handicap de ne pas partir
à la corde, précisait son team manager, car il est difficile de prendre la bonne trajectoire dans le premier virage. Souvent, Nyck a perdu des places au départ et il a ensuite dû s’employer pour remonter sans
s’accrocher”.
Malgré ce handicap, Nyck réussit à gagner une manche, à terminer 2e dans une autre, en signant
deux fois le meilleur tour en course, preuve de sa rapidité. Il passe donc de la 15e à la 8e place à l’issue des qualifications. “En pré-finale, les pneus neufs ont mis un petit moment à monter en température et j’ai dû attendre quelques tours pour que le matériel donne tout son potentiel”. Devant, le Russe
Daniel Kvyat s’est envolé, mais Nyck produit un effort continu pour revenir en seconde position.

Au départ de la finale, il doit encore s’élancer depuis la ligne extérieure et se retrouve une fois de
plus sur la partie sale de la piste. Qu’importe les places perdues, Nyck se lance dans la bataille. Doublant quasiment un pilote par tour, il ne tarde pas à rejoindre Kvyat, qui s’annonce comme son
grand rival en 2009, avant de s’assurer une avance de près de deux secondes ! Plus que jamais candidat à sa propre succession à la WSK, Nyck De Vries fera logiquement partie des favoris le 22 février
prochain lors de la 14e édition de la Winter Cup à Lonato, qui reste la grande classique internationale du début de saison. Nyck y évoluera à domicile, puisque le Hollandais s’est récemment installé
dans la région de Brescia, dans le nord de l’Italie. Il s’est ainsi rapproché de
l’usine Zanardi et pourra plus facilement multiplier les séances d’essais privés. Ça promet…
