Après le symposium de 2010 sur le thème «Paysage, image & son», l’ECAV organise une nouvelle rencontre d’artistes et de théoriciens ouverte au public. Au cœur de cette manifestation,
le projet Le ventre de la baleine qui a donné lieu à l’organisation d’une suite d’expositions
en Suisse autour du thème de l’installation et de la performance (www.installaction.com).
Toutes les personnes impliquées dans la réalisation de ce projet seront présentes dans un symposium qui propose d’ouvrir un espace de réflexion et d’expérimentation sur la thématique de
la performance et l’installation. Le symposium Performing the Exhibition. On exhibition practice
between performance and installation aimerait en particulier susciter des rencontres et des
échanges entres artistes et théoriciens qui inscrivent leurs recherches et leurs productions à la
croisée des genres tels que ceux de l’action et de l’installation qui questionnent au travers de la
performance la relation entre corps, action et espaces. Le symposium examinera des questions
de formats d’expositions qui incluent de plus en plus d’éléments performatifs et installatifs
comme dispositifs narratifs, basés sur la réception participative du public.
Le programme de symposium contient des contributions des théoriciens et commissaires
d’expos, entre autres : Sally de Kunst, directrice du Belluard Festivals Fribourg ; Barnaby
Drabble, auteur/commissaire d’expo, Zürich/UK ; Katya Garcia Anton, directrice du Centre
d’art contemporain CAC Genf ; Federica Martini, coordinatrice du programme MAPS de
l’ECAV ; Sibylle Omlin, directrice de l’ECAV ; Dorothee Richter, coordinatrice du programme «Curating» de la Zürcher Hochschule der Künste ZHDK, Anne Rochat, artiste
Lausanne, et Gavin Wade, commissaire d’exposition de Eastside Projects Birmingham UK.
Le symposium se déroulera en Anglais et en Français.
Le symposium du 8 au 10 avril 2011 rassemble les interventions des artistes qui ont contribué
au projet Le ventre de la baleine : Janusz Baldyga (PL), Christophe Fellay (CH), Simon Kindle
(FL), Pe Lang (CH), Davor Ljubičic (DE), Valerian Maly/Klara Schilliger (CH), Victorine
Müller (CH), Denis Romanovski (SE), Dorothea Rust (CH), Katja Schenker (CH), Berclaz
de Sierre (CH) avec leurs œuvres installées dans le château et le parc. En plus sont invités
Boris Nieslony (DE) et Marie-France et Patricia Martin (B).

Performing the Exhibition
On exhibition practice between performance and installation.
The three-day symposium, Performing the Exhibition. On exhibition practice between performance
and installation, produced by the Ecole cantonale d’art du Valais ECAV, brings together international artists, curators and theorists to explore the relationship between performance and
installation in the context of the contemporary art exhibition. Key amongst the concerns of the
participants is the possibility for rethinking the static model of exhibition and exploring the
way in which ‘performative’ approaches, adopted by artists and curators alike, can reframe the
exhibition as an environment undergoing formal or relational transformation.
The symposium examines the way that diverse artistic and curatorial practices can be seen
addressing several linked questions: If allowed to transform and evolve its surroundings, how
might performance reprogram the exhibition format? To what extent do experiments between
performance and installation describe a new role for exhibition publics? With a renewed
focus on the participatory and process-based possibilities of the exhibition, to what extent has
curating itself become a performative activity?
Speakers include: Katya Garcia Anton, Director of CAC, Geneva; Barnaby Drabble, Curator
and Critic, Zürich; Sally de Kunst, Director of the Belluard Festival, Fribourg; Federica
Martini, Director of the MAPS program at ECAV; Sibylle Omlin, Direktor of ECAV; Dorothee
Richter, Director of the Postgraduate Program in Curating at the ZHDK, Zürich; Anne
Rochat, artist, Lausanne & Gavin Wade, artist, curator and director of Eastside Projects,
Birmingham, UK.
The background for the symposium is the touring exhibition project In the Belly of the Whale,
curated by Sibylle Omlin, which has taken the theme of transformation between performance
and installation, reconfiguring itself over the course of the tour. After Vaduz and Constance,
the Château Mercier in Sierre provides the final venue for the project. The symposium will be
interspersed with performative interventions from the artists of the exhibition.
All 13 of the project’s artists will be present during the weekend: Janusz Baldyga (PL),
Christoph Fellay (CH), Simon Kindle (FL), Pe Lang (CH), Davor Ljubičic (DE), Valerian
Maly/Klara Schilliger (CH), Victorine Müller (CH), Denis Romanovski (SE), Dorothea
Rust (CH), Katja Schenker (CH), Berclaz de Sierre (CH). Also invited are: Marie-France
und Patricia Martin (B) and Boris Nieslony (DE).
After last year’s symposium on the theme of ‘Landscape, Image and Sound’, ‘Performing
the Exhibition’ is one of the ECAV’s series of annual meetings of arts practitioners and theorists in Sierre.
Documentation of the symposium will be published in the online journal oncurating.org

Die Ecole cantonale d’art du Valais ECAV organisiert vom 8. Bis 11. April das internationale
Symposium Performing the Exhibition. On exhibition practice between performance and installation,
welches zeitgenössische Ausstellungsformate untersucht, in denen installativ-performative
Elemente integriert sind. Zeitbasierte und performativ-narrative Komponenten finden mehr
und mehr in Kunstausstellungen Eingang, auch als Möglichkeit partizipativer Ansprache des
Publikums und als experimentelle Form neuer Ausstellungsmodelle.
Internationale Theoretiker/innen und Kurator/innen wie Sally de Kunst, Direktorin des
Belluard Festivals Fribourg ; Barnaby Drabble, Kurator/Autor ; Katya Garcia Anton, Direktorin des Centre d’art Contemporain Genf ; Federica Martini, Leiterin des Programms MAPS
der ECAV ; Sibylle Omlin, Direktorin ECAV ; Dorothee Richter, Leiterin des «Curating»Programms der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste ; Anne Rochat, Künstlerin Lausanne ;
und Gavin Wade, Direktor Eastside Projects Birmingham UK, werden am Symposiumsprogramm teilnehmen und über das Thema Performing the Exhibition. On exhibition practice
between performance and installation debattieren. Das Symposium findet in englischer und
französischer Sprache statt.
Begleitet wird das Symposium von Interventionen des Ausstellungsprojekts Der Bauch des
Wals, das 2010 und 2011 an verschiedenen Orten der Schweiz, in Vaduz und Konstanz Untersuchungen zur Transformation von Installation und Performance durchgeführt hat ; es findet in
Sierre im Château Mercier seinen Abschluss (www.installaction.com). Vom 8. bis 10. April 2011
versammeln sich alle 13 am Projekt beteiligten Kunstschaffenden: Janusz Baldyga (PL), Christoph Fellay (CH), Simon Kindle (FL)/Katrin Keller (CH), Pe Lang (CH), Davor Ljubičic
(DE), Valerian Maly/Klara Schilliger (CH), Victorine Müller (CH), Denis Romanovski (SE),
Dorothea Rust (CH), Katja Schenker (CH), Berclaz de Sierre (CH). Zudem sind die Performer Boris Nieslony (DE) und Marie-France und Patricia Martin (B) eingeladen.
Nach dem letztjährigen Symposium zum Thema «Landschaft, Bild und Ton» organisiert die
Ecole cantonale d’art du Valais ECAV erneut ein Zusammentreffen von Kunstschaffenden und
Theoretiker/innen.
