Jacob Kaufmann III, b. c1555. He was the son of Jacob II (b. c1530) who was the son
of Jacob I (b. c1500). Jacob III was married to Anni Bürki. At his marriage he was from
Schopfe, Canton Basel, Switzerland.
1. Nicholas Kaufmann, b. 10 Dec 1593, Steffisburg, Bern, Switzerland. He was
married to Elsi Blank on 17 Jan 1617 at Steffisburg. His children were baptized at
Steffisburg.
11. Johannes Kauffman, b. 29 Jun 1617. He married Anna Eichelberger. His
children were baptized at Steffisburg.
117. Jacob Kaufmann, b. 8 Jan 1660. He may be the old Jacob Kaufmann being
taken care of by the Steffisburg State Church congregation in 1741. It was stated that
he was the father of Isaac Kaufman whose three children were being taken care of by the
Heimberg congregation in 1741.
1171. Hans Kaufman, b. c1690 He was called the emigrant Täuffer of Steffisburg
and it was reported that he sold his property called Honeggschwand by 4 Dec 1733, but
no funds were discovered. He may be the Mennonite Hans Kaufman of Steffisburg at
Graitery, Moutier, Jura, Switzerland in 1738. He was called the brother of Isaac.
1172. Isaac Kaufman, b. c1692. He lived at Heimberg near Steffisburg when he
married Barbara Walder on 24 Apr 1716. He was an Anabaptist and moved out and
died outside of Bern by 1741, leaving seven children. Two daughters and one son were
being taken care of by the Heimberg congregation. His father was Jacob and his brother
was Hans. He was called a Täuffer in 1741 but he baptized his children in the State
Church.

131. Michael Kaufmann, b. 28 May 1648. He married Elsbeth Hirsing (Hirshi)
from Schangnau on 26 Feb 1668 at Steffisburg. Michael left Steffisburg around the year
1680 and possibly went to live at Schangnau as that is where his brother Isaac
Kaufmann, the Anabaptist preacher took refuge when the authorities were trying to
arrest him. Michael may well have been an Anabaptist as were his brothers.3 He may
have been the Michael Kauffmann who was called an Anabaptist from Friedelsheim in
the Pfalz when he was buried at Baldenheim, Alsace on 6 Jan 1692. He had been
working for Hans Währÿ, an Anabaptist at Baldenheim and died while he was traveling
back to Switzerland.

1312. Michael Kaufmann, b. 14 Mar 1675, Steffisburg. He is probably the Michael
who arrived in Pennsylvania in August 1717 and died in 1718 in Lancaster County,
Pennsylvania. His first wife's name is unknown. He was married secondly about 1707
to Anna Kneisley (1688-1758), daughter of Anthony and Magdalena Kneisley.

I have placed two of the three 1717 Kaufman immigrants, Michael and Andrew
as his sons because it is very likely that Michael was an Anabaptist and he
probably had more children born after he left Steffisburg. Andrew was a name
very popular among the Hirschi family at Schangnau and Eggiwil and would have
been another good possibility for a son's name. Andrew Kaufman, judging from the
ages of his children was much younger than Michael. Michael who was born in 1675
is the only Michael Kaufman from the Steffisburg Kaufman family who fits the age
of the Michael of Manor township who died in 1718. From the names of the 1717
immigrants and the large number of Anabaptists among the Steffisburg Kaufman
family it would indicate that they were very likely from Steffisburg. Isaac the
other Kauffman immigrant of 1717 was a first cousin to Michael and Andrew.

he and his father-in-law were Täuffers. They were listed as Mennonite refugees living at
Dienheim by Oppenheim, Hesse, Germany in April 1672, both about age 60, having 5
children, the oldest over 20 and the youngest 7 years. It did not say whether the
