Bus n°81, ligne d’Azur, leaving from l’Octroi opposite Villefranche sur Mer stadium near the Tourist office.
Frequency: approximately every 20 minutes
Journey length: 15 minutes
How to get to the bus stop: on leaving the cruise terminal, turn right and stop in
front of the Cocteau chapel. Cross Place Amélie Pollonais opposite the chapel,
go up the Rue Gambetta steps, then continue left along Rue Henri Biais. At the
end of the street, you will see the Citadelle. Turn right towards the traditional
soap factory “Terres Dorées”. Then take either Avenue Maréchal Joffre or Sadi
Carnot, both of which go to the main street. The bus stop is on Avenue Foch next
to the Tourist Office facing the pharmacy.
Allow 10 minutes on foot.

Comment accéder à l’arrêt de bus : en sortant du terminal de croisières, tournez sur votre droite et arrêtez-vous devant la Chapelle Cocteau. Traversez la
Place Amélie Pollonais face à la chapelle, montez les escaliers de la rue Gambetta puis poursuivre sur votre gauche dans la rue Henri Biais. En bout de rue
vous voyez la Citadelle, tournez alors à droite en direction de la Savonnerie artisanale “Terres Dorées”. Puis, au choix empruntez soit l’avenue Maréchal Joffre
soit l’avenue Sadi Carnot qui mènent toutes deux à la rue principale. L’arrêt de
bus se trouve avenue Foch à côté de l’Office de Tourisme et face à la pharmacie
(compter 10 minutes à pied).

On getting off the bus, go past the Tourist office (town plan available) and
cross Place Clemenceau, taking note of the statue of the “Pêcheur à l’épervier”
(fisherman with a net), a work given to the town in 1890 by the sculptress Claude
Vignon.
En descendant du bus, passer devant l’Office de Tourisme (plan de ville
disponible), traverser la place Clemenceau en admirant au passage la statue
du « ¨Pêcheur à l’épervier », œuvre donnée par la sculptrice Claude Vignon à la
commune en 1890.

Go down the street following Avenue Jean Mermoz, which overlooks the old port
of Saint Jean. This is the heart of the village. Built between 1840 and 1876 by
the convicts from Villefranche sur Mer, it is still the base for several traditional
fishermen. The marina was inaugurated in 1972 and can accommodate more
than 500 boats.
Then walk past the Voile d’Or**** hotel, the first hotel to be built on the peninsula,
and continue in the direction of Paloma beach. In passing, admire the imposing
gate of the villa called “Les Rochers”, the remains of a villa built in 1920 by Paris
Singer (son of the American inventor Isaac Merrit Singer) who lived there with
the famous ‘barefoot dancer’, Isadora Duncan.
Just next to it is “Château Saint Jean”, a magnificent neo-gothic Venetianstyle villa graced with a private harbour and boathouse, built in 1899 for Carlo
Wedekind, an Italian-German banker. Originally called “Château Wedekind”, the
villa was bought in 1909 by the Hungarian princess, Wilma Lwoff-Parlaghy, who
renamed it “Château Saint Jean”. In the bathroom, a sort of swimming pool, 1.60
metres deep by 3 metres wide, was installed instead of a traditional bath – a
curiosity at the time.
At the Chemin de Saint Hospice crossroads, cross the road to get to the
footpath (paved), which starts at the Jardin de la Paix (peace garden), so-called
since the installation of a fountain given by the COEXIST foundation. The
objective of this foundation, whose logo is made up of the Moslem crescent,
the Star of David and the Christian cross, is to encourage exchanges between
the different religions. The fountain was inaugurated in 2007, in the presence
of James Kidner, president of the COEXIST foundation, Cherie Blair, wife of the
former British Prime minister, Tony Blair, and the U2 singer, Bono.
Follow the path to Paloma beach (about 30 minutes walk) enjoying, in passing,
the stunning panoramic view from Beaulieu Bay to Italy.
Rejoin the path taking the steps from the beach. Follow the Chemin de Saint
Hospice on the left to reach Saint Hospice chapel. Built in the 11th Century on
the ruins of a sanctuary, the chapel is named after Saint Hospitius, who lived
as a hermit in a tower in approximately 550 A.D. Formerly, the chapel was an
important pilgrimage destination and had around 140 ex-voto offerings. Nearly
Descendre et suivre l’avenue Jean Mermoz qui surplombe le vieux port de Saint
Jean. C’est le cœur du village. Construit entre 1840 et 1876 par les bagnards
de Villefranche sur mer, il abrite encore aujourd’hui quelques pêcheurs
traditionnels. Le port de plaisance a été inauguré en 1972 et peut accueillir plus
de 500 bateaux.
Passer ensuite devant l’hôtel La Voile d’Or****, premier hôtel à avoir été
construit sur la presqu’île, et se diriger vers la plage de « Paloma ». Au passage,
on peut admirer le portail monumental de la villa « Les Rochers », vestige d’une
villa édifiée en 1920 par Paris Singer (fils de l’inventeur américain Isaac Merrit
Singer) qui y vivra en compagnie de la célèbre « danseuse aux pieds nus » Isadora
Duncan.
Juste à côté se trouve le « Château Saint Jean ». Splendide demeure de style
gothique-vénitien construite en 1899 et dotée d’un petit port privé avec garage
à bateaux, cette villa fut construite sur les ordres de Carlo Wedekind, banquier
italo-allemand. D’abord baptisé Château Wedekind, la villa est rachetée en 1909
par la princesse hongroise Wilma Lwoff-Parlaghy qui la rebaptise Château Saint
Jean. Curiosité pour l’époque, dans la salle de bains, une sorte de piscine de
1,60m de profondeur sur 3m de largeur tenait lieu de baignoire.
Au croisement avec le Chemin de Saint Hospice, traverser la route pour gagner
le sentier pédestre (pavé) qui débute au Jardin de la Paix appelé ainsi depuis
l’installation d’une fontaine offerte par la fondation COEXIST. Cette fondation
au logo format du Croissant musulman, de l’étoile de David et de la Croix
chrétienne œuvre pour promouvoir les échanges entre les différentes religions.
L’inauguration de cette fontaine a eu lieu en 2007 en présence de James Kidner,
président de la fondation COEXIST, de Chérie Blair, épouse de l’ancien Premier
ministre britannique Tony Blair et du chanteur Bono du groupe U2.
Suivre le sentier jusqu’à la plage de Paloma (environ 30 mn de marche) en
admirant au passage le superbe panorama du littoral de la baie de Beaulieu
jusqu’à l’Italie.
Rejoindre la route en prenant les escaliers de la plage. Suivre sur la gauche le
chemin de Saint Hospice pour rejoindre la Chapelle Saint Hospice. Edifiée au
XIeme siècle sur les ruines d’un sanctuaire elle doit son nom à un saint, nommé
saint-JEAn CAP FERRAT
all of them have disappeared now but the largest still stands beside the chapel. It
is a bronze statue of the Virgin Mary (11.4 metres high) which was commissioned
by a merchant from Nice in 1904 after a wish came true.
Retracing your steps following the Chemin de Saint Hospice, go past Paloma
Beach to the starting point of the walk and the road to the port. From there, go
back to the same bus stop for the return journey.
You can round off this outing with a visit to the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild. To
get there, there are two possibilities:
Bus: take the n° 81 bus towards the Port and get off at the third stop next to the
Villa. Name of bus stop: Passable, fare €1. At the end of the visit, take the n°81
bus at the same stop for Villefranche or Nice.
On foot: 10 minutes’ walk from the bus stop
Hospitius, qui vivait vers l’an 550 et menait une vie d’ermite dans une tour. La
chapelle fut autrefois un lieu de pèlerinage important et compta jusqu’à 140 exvoto presque tous disparus aujourd’hui mais dont le plus monumental subsiste
toujours puisqu’il s’agit de la vierge en bronze (11,4 m de haut) qui jouxte la
chapelle et a été construite en 1904 à la demande d’un négociant niçois suite à
la réalisation d’un vœu.
Retourner sur ses pas en suivant le chemin de Saint Hospice, dépasser la plage
de Paloma et retrouver le point de départ du sentier et la route vers le port.
Rejoindre l’arrêt de bus d’arrivée pour le retour.
Vous pouvez compléter cette excursion avec la visite de la villa Ephrussi de
Rothschild. Deux possibilités :
en bus : prendre la ligne 81 au Port et descendre 3 arrêts plus loin juste à côté de
la Villa , nom de l’arrêt :Passable, tarif 1 euro. A la fin de la visite, reprendre le bus
81 à cet endroit pour Villefranche ou Nice.

One of the jewels of the Riviera! Inspired by the Italian Renaissance, this palace
draws on many different styles and periods with strong Lombard, Venetian and
Spanish influences. The palace was built between 1905 and 1912. It was the
dream of Baroness Beatrice who fell in love with the magical 7-hectare natural
site and decided to create a setting on it to house her collection of works of art
(18th century furniture, porcelain from the Manufactures Royales de Sèvres and
Vincennes, etc).
The baroness bequeathed the Villa and all its treasures to the A‘ cadémie des
Beaux-Arts de l’Institut de France’, who became the owners on her death in 1934.
Audio-guides, giving a commentary on the history of the Villa, are available in
seven languages (French, English, German, Italian, Spanish, Dutch and Russian).
The Villa is set in the middle of nine themed gardens and looks over the bays of
Un des joyaux de la Côte d’Azur ! D’inspiration renaissance italienne, ce palais
regroupe tous les styles et toutes les époques avec de fortes influences
lombardes, vénitiennes et espagnoles. La réalisation du domaine s’étalera de
1905 à 1912. C’est le rêve fou de la Baronne Béatrice qui tombe amoureuse d’un
site féerique et décide d’y aménager ses 7 hectares vierges pour y implanter
l’écrin qui mettra en valeur sa collection d’œuvres d’art (mobilier du XVIII eme
siècle, porcelaines des Manufactures Royales de Sèvres et de Vincennes, etc).
La Baronne léguera la totalité de sa villa et ses trésors à l’Académie des beauxarts de l’Institut de France qui en devient propriétaire à sa mort en 1934.

disponibles en sept langues (français, anglais, allemand, italien, espagnol,
néerlandais et russe).
