Announces the following vacancy commencing in the 2014-2015 season:
RESIDENT CONDUCTOR
(position pending confirmation of matching funds from Canada Council of the Arts)
National Auditions will be held on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 in the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium in
Halifax, NS.
The individual selected will be an emerging conducting talent who will apprentice with Music
Director Maestro Bernhard Gueller to ensure the continued artistic success of Symphony Nova
Scotia. Responsibilities will include but not be limited to the following:

Cover the conductor for selected concerts (in consultation with the Music Director).
Sit on the Programme Advisory Committee. Make recommendations to Maestro Gueller and
the Programme Advisory Committee on Canadian compositions and young and upcoming
Canadian guest artists.
Sit on the Education & Outreach Committee. Be an active participant in the planning and
implementation of educational programming.
Conduct Pops Concerts, Education & Outreach Concerts, Specials, Events, and other
programs as required.
Meet regularly with the Music Director to further develop skills in conducting,
interpretation, rehearsal technique, musician relations, programming, and season planning.
Act as an advocate for Symphony Nova Scotia within the community.
All applicants for the position of Resident Conductor must be Canadian Citizens or have current
full-time employment status in Canada. The successful candidate will be required to live in
Halifax for the duration of the contract. Candidates should have an advanced musical degree or
equivalent and must have reached an accomplished level of performance on their chosen
instrument.

Des auditions nationales auront lieu le mardi 22 avril 2014 à l’auditorium Rebecca Cohn à Halifax
(Nouvelle-Écosse).
Le candidat choisi sera un jeune talent du milieu de la direction d’orchestre, qui effectuera un
apprentissage auprès du directeur musical, maestro Bernhard Gueller, pour assurer le succès
artistique continu de Symphony Nova Scotia. Ses responsabilités incluront entre autres les
suivantes :

Remplacer le chef d’orchestre à certains concerts (en consultation avec le directeur
musical).
Siéger au Comité consultatif sur le programme. Présenter des recommandations au comité
et au maestro Gueller sur les compositions canadiennes et les jeunes et nouveaux artistes
canadiens invités.
Siéger au Comité sur l’éducation et le rayonnement. Participer activement à la planification
et la mise en œuvre de la programmation éducative.
Diriger au besoin les concerts pops, ceux du programme d’éducation et de rayonnement, les
concerts spéciaux et ceux organisés dans le cadre d’événements et d’autres programmes.
Participer régulièrement à des réunions avec le directeur artistique pour perfectionner ses
compétences en direction d’orchestre, en interprétation, en technique de répétition, en
relation avec les musiciens, en programmation et en planification de la saison.
Promouvoir Symphony Nova Scotia dans la collectivité.
Tous les candidats au poste de chef d’orchestre attitré doivent être citoyens canadiens ou avoir
le statut requis pour occuper un poste à temps plein au Canada. Le candidat choisi devra vivre à
Halifax pendant la durée du contrat. Les candidats doivent détenir un diplôme d’études
supérieures en musique ou l’équivalent et avoir un niveau d’interprétation impeccable à
l’instrument de leur choix.
