Born in Switzerland, Maurer trained at the Amsterdam Academy and spent most of his career in Utrecht, where he
painted history pictures, genre subjects and portraits of the local gentry. He was director of the Utrecht Art Academy
from 1770-80. One of his most important surviving works is the decoration of the Vrijvrouwe van Renswoude
Foundation in Utrecht.
