HPV VACCINE IN MOTHER AND CHILD WEEK IN RWANDA
The second Mother and Child Health Week 2012 edition has been organized from 16 to 18
October 2012.
The official ceremony at national level took place in Karongi District,
Western Province. The Guest of honor of this ceremony was the Minister of Health. The
United Nations Agencies and other Health Partners have been actively involved in all
activities relating to organization and celebration of the Week. The theme of the Week

Handwashing World Day
Alongside the Mother and Child Health Week, the 3rd dose of HPV vaccine has been
administered to girls of Primary 6 and Secondary 3, and girls out of school of same age at
national level. Rwanda was the first country in Africa to introduce ountrywide human
papilloma virus vaccine (HPV) in 2011 to prevent cervical cancer An assessment on HPV
introduction in Rwanda has been also conducted during this week for lessons learnt and a
future
introduction
of
the
vaccine

Vitamin A distribution
The success of the introduction of new vaccines is particularly due to the good
performance and organization of the rwanda health sector which enabled reduction by
two-thirds, of under-five mortality. The results from the Demographic Health Survey
2010 indicated that MDG 4 can be attained as the under-five mortality rate dropped from
103 deaths per 1000 live births in 2008 to 54/1000 in 2010 and infant mortality from 62
to 50 in the same period.
During the Mother and Child Health Week 2012, other interventions were provided to
communities such as vitamin A distribution
to children from 0 to 59 months and to
pregnant women. Mebendazole, iron and acid folic were as well distributed to post-natal
mothers. Also, the Week gave an opportunity to launch a 4 months campaign on hygiene
and sensitisation on breastfeeding. The results of the Week have been very successful
countrywide.

La cérémonie de commémoration de la Journée de Santé Mentale au niveau national a eu
lieu le 19/10/201 au District de Gisagara, Province du Sud, après une marche de soutien par
les membres des Associations de santé mentale, des professionnels locaux de santé et des
élèves des Ecoles primaires et secondaires de la localité. Une population très nombreuse a
participé à cette cérémonie.
Les activités de la Journée ont été présidées par la Ministre de la Santé, en compagnie du
Gouverneur de la Province du Sud, du Maire du District de Gisagara, du Représentant de
O·206 GX GpOpJXp GH OD &RRSpUDWLRQ %HOJH HW G·DXWUHV SDUWHQDLUHV QDWLRQDX[ HW
internationaux qui oeuvrent dans le secteur de la santé mentale. En plus des discours
officiels, les autres activités ont été des sketches, poèmes, danses et chansons, exécutés
par la population locale dont les Agents de Santé Communautaires.
Lors de ces cérémonies, plusieurs messages ont été prononcés dont le discours de la

Tous les messages ont convergé vers la sauvegarde de la santé intégrale par la protection
des deux systèmes physiquH HW PHQWDO DYHF O·DSSXL GHV GLIIpUHQWV LQWHUYHQDQWV GDQV OD
santé mentale, médecins, religieux, familles, communautés et autres qui apportent un
VRXWLHQSRXUOHUpWDEOLVVHPHQWGHO·LQGLYLGXD\DQWGHVSUREOqPHVPHQWDX[VXUWRXWORUVTX·LO
est confronté à une maladie chronique. La nécessité G·LQWpJUHU GH SOXV HQ SOXV OD VDQWp
mentale dans les services du système de santé a été fortement souligné.
