Side used to measure the induction in function of the number of turns. The tangent galvanometer has been widely used by teachers because of its flexibility and efficiency. Its double-sided design does not clutter the circuit and provides the possibility of varying the parameters that influence magnetic induction. Thus, we can study the induction at the centre of a flat coil in function of the current, the number of turns and their radius. Its dimensions (27 cm x 34 cm height), price and features make it a device for classes as well as Experiments. • • Calculating the electromagnetic field created by the circuit: o In function of the number of turns o In function of the distance o In function of the current o In function of the direction of the current. Determining the horizontal component of the earth’s magnetic induction. Principle – description The turns on the printed circuit are part of a perfect flat coil. • If no current is passing through them, the needle is subject to only the horizontal component of the Earth’s induction BH (and possibly other stray inductions). • When the current passes through the turns, it creates an induction B σ perpendicular to BH. The needle turns towards an equilibrium position α corresponding to the resultant B of the 2 inductions. ENGLISH 5 Electricity Tangent galvanometer Ref : 292 003 For a flat coil the induction at the centre is: With: N = number of turns. R = radius of the turns. / = intensity of the current passing through the turns. In equilibrium B0 = B H tg α. DESCRIPTION The device is in the form of a big printed circuit held tightly at its edges by an aluminium profile. The galvanometer is placed at the centre of this circuit exactly perpendicular to the plane of the turns. Its main characteristics are: • An 18 mm long magnetic needle, extended by two aluminium wires to carry out accurate measurements of angles. It is protected by a transparent cover. A protractor screen-printed in white on a black anodised aluminium plate. • The turns are clearly visible on the 2 sides of the printed circuit. Dimensions: width 27 cm, height 34 cm. COMMISSIONING Fix the needle at the centre of the protractor and make sure it oscillates freely (the needle is delivered glued to the base). Place the transparent cover that protects the needle from air currents, which could make it oscillate. Note: The magnetic needle extended by 2 aluminium wires is fragile. In spite of the care taken during transportation, one of the wires may come off. It can be easily glued back using “Araldite” glue, otherwise only the needle may be returned to us. ENGLISH 6 Electricity Tangent galvanometer Ref : 292 003 ADDITIONAL ACCESSORIES • 6 or 12 V, 5 A power supply, part no. 284 083 • Rheostat (for example 281 044) • Blade reversing switch (for example 283 009) • 0 to 5 A ammeter. Part no. 291 016. Experiments Before carrying out the measurements • Check that the needle oscillates freely • Adjust the device in such a way that when turned off, the magnetic needle is in the plane of the turns (according to the 00 diameter of the protractor) • Carry out the set-up as shown below: 1. Power supply 2. Ammeter 3. Rheostat 4. Reversing switch 5. Turns of the device. • Ensure that the wires connecting the tangent galvanometer are twisted (to reduce stray inductions) • For every measurement, reverse the current. This helps detect, in the case of asymmetric measurements, a faulty position of the device. MEASUREMENTS The device helps study the variation of induction at the centre of the flat coil in function of the I. N. R factors. ENGLISH 7 Electricity Tangent galvanometer Ref : 292 003 1 Influence of the current I Use the turn R = 12 cm (N = 1 ) and vary I from 1 to 5 A. Draw the graph tgα = f(I). It’s a straight line. We conclude that tgα / I = Ct. 2 Influence of the number of turns N Take successively 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 turns for a constant R ( 1 2 cm) and I=3 A. Draw the graph tg α = f(N). We verify that: tg α / N = Ct. N 3 Influence of the radius R of the turns Use turns with R = 6, 8, 1 0 , 1 2 cm radius and I=3A. Draw the graph tg α = f(1/R) We verify that R tg α = Ct. 4 Determining BH (horizontal component of the earth’s induction). Having calculated Bo for a value of I, N, R, and having measured α in this case, we can determine the horizontal component of the Earth’s magnetic induction: Bo = BH tg α.
