About C2UExpo 2015
Conference Theme and Objectives
C2UExpo (Community, College, University-Exposition)
is a bi-annual Canadian-led international conference
designed to:
• showcase the best practices in community-campus
partnerships worldwide;
• create a space for collaboration around key issues; and
• foster ideas, connections, and frameworks with the
purpose of strengthening our communities.
The overarching conference theme is Citizen-Driven
Policy: Strengthening Community Engagement for a
Better World. Through this theme we hope to:
• Provide participants with a unique opportunity to be
inspired and energized by the successes of communitycampus partnerships, community based research, and
community service-learning;
• Build connections and share ideas through meaningful
dialogue;
• Work in solidarity to build on the cumulative legacy
of the Expo’s networks, partnerships and projects
throughout Canada and the world;
• Build momentum for policy solutions that help civil
society organizations navigate the current environment,
and more effectively assert their interests through policy
development and engagement; and
• Strengthen the growing national movement to deepen
community-campus engagement as universities and
colleges seek to enhance their potential to contribute to
the development of Canada and the public good.
The conference sees upwards of 400 attendees from
all parts of the world and provides a space where
community members, universities, colleges, government,
and nonprofit organizations can work together to share
and cultivate research, knowledge, and relationships over
the 3-day conference program. Activities and sessions
are diverse, ranging from workshops to art activities,
deliberative dialogue to mobile tours, and everything in
between.
This year’s conference takes place at Carleton University,
Ottawa, ON from May 26 – 29, 2015. Befitting its location,
the conference will seek to explore citizen solutions for
a better world by delving into the array of policy work
being done to advance solutions in areas such as health,
environment, food security, and employment.
Conference Slogan
Citizen Solutions. Better World.
Some highlights for this year’s Expo include:
• How-to sessions as well as an issues-based open space
geared toward mobilizing policy action.
• Pre-conference workshops hosted by CommunityBased Research Canada (CBRC), Community-Campus
Partnerships for Health (CCPH), the Canadian Alliance
for Community Service-Learning (CACSL) and Volunteer
Canada, and the Institute for Community Engaged
Scholarship (ICES).
• Pre-and post-conference web conversations.

The History of the CUExpo Series
Community-campus partnerships are an important
vehicle through which practical and pressing issues facing
society can be researched and addressed. They provide
the opportunity for faculty and students to work directly
with knowledgeable community groups to bring about
positive change through research and learning. This
approach involves creative methods of engagement to meet
community needs and to produce results that are important
and useful to community, academics, and policy makers.
When the idea of community-campus partnerships was
in its first stages of growth, researchers and community
groups alike had very few resources available to them
to which they could turn for guidance. The CUExpo
movement began in Canada to address this dearth, and
provided individuals involved in community-campus
partnerships with a forum through which they could share
experiences, strategies, and ideas.
The first CUExpo was held in Saskatoon in 2003, and the
conference has since been held every 2 years in different
provinces, including Newfoundland, Ontario, British
Columbia, and Manitoba.
C2UExpo is a collaborative affair, and is organized jointly
by communities, universities and colleges, government,
and non-profit organizations.
