UNIVERSITY MAP LIBRARY [email protected] Instructions for accessing Remote Sensing Data University of Maryland EARTH SCIENCE DATA INTERFACE (ESDI) Introduction: The following steps outline ‘in brief’ a method for downloading remote sensing data from the EARTH SCIENCE DATA INTERFACE (ESDI) hosted by the University of Maryland. 1. A google search for “university of Maryland remote sensing data” will bring you to http://glcf.umiacs.umd.edu/ 2. Under “Download Data” on the right click “ESDI” to access the Earth Science Data Interface. http://glcfapp.glcf.umd.edu:8080/esdi/index.jsp 3. Click “Map Search” option. 4. Check the boxes beside data sets you want to search. 5. Above the map window select the PLACE tab. Enter “Niagara” or whatever place term you want to use. Hit ENTER to apply the search. a. Selecting ETM+ Landsat Imagery and searching for the term “Niagara” results in 11 images. b. Although the map doesn’t appear, the search was still successful and I can select the PREVIEW AND DOWNLOAD option right away. Click a ‘browse’ JPEG to see an enlarged view of the image. The .gz files will need to be unzipped using 7-zip utility. 2 UNIVERSITY MAP LIBRARY [email protected] 3 Search using zoom and select 1. Click the START OVER button window. located in the upper right corner of the map window to refresh the search 2. The default tool is the zoom tool. Click and drag on the map to identify an area to zoom to. The refresh may take several seconds. Continue to zoom until you are satisfied with the view. 3. Use the Select tool to click on the area to be searched on the map. If you click the Select Window tool the result will include a search of the entire geography shown in the map window. If you see the warning about too many search results, click the “Select Window” button to DE-select. 4. Click the Preview & Download button to see your search results.
