Hofesh Shechter is recognised as one of the
UK’s most exciting contemporary artists, with
his eponymous Company touring worldwide
to audience and critical acclaim. A former
Drummer in a rock band, Shechter is renowned
for creating the musical scores for each of
his dance creations with his raw, atmospheric
music complimenting his Company’s unique
physicality.
Hofesh moved to the UK in 2002, where
he made his choreographic debut with the
duet Fragments (2003), followed by Cult for
The Place Prize 2004 and Uprising (2006). In
2007 he was commissioned by London’s three
major venues The Place, Southbank Centre and
Sadler’s Wells to make In your rooms which
was nominated for a South Bank Show Award
and won the Critics Circle Award for Best
Choreography (modern) in 2008.
In 2008 due to popular demand Hofesh
formed his international Company of highly
skilled, individually talented dancers, who
continue to tour his work extensively
worldwide. In 2009 Hofesh created The
Choreographer’s Cut – commissioned by
Sadler’s Wells and performed at London’s
iconic Roundhouse, for which he reworked his
acclaimed double bill Uprising/In your rooms
to feature a band of 20 musicians alongside a
company of 17 dancers. Also in 2009 Hofesh
was commissioned by Brighton Festival to
create the “exquisitely acrimonious” The Art of
Not Looking Back (The Observer, 2009) which
was inspired by and made for six
female dancers.
In May 2010 Hofesh presented his first full
length work Political Mother which premiered
at the Brighton Festival. Featuring Shechter’s
cinematic score, the piece was performed by
ten dancers and featured a band of
Hofesh Shechter est considéré comme l’un des

Royaume-Uni, et pour cause : sa compagnie
éponyme, qui effectue des tournées dans le
monde entier, est saluée tant par le public
que par la critique. Autre aspect qui fait la
renommée de cet ancien batteur au sein
d’un groupe rock : il compose lui-même les
pièces musicales qui règlent chacune de ses
créations chorégraphiques – et les nuances
crues, atmosphériques que l’on reconnaît à
sa musique complètent à merveille l’énergie
singulière de sa compagnie.
En 2002, Hofesh Shechter s’est établi
au Royaume-Uni où il a fait ses débuts
chorégraphiques avec le duo Fragments
(2003), suivi de la pièce Cult, pour laquelle
il a remporté le prix The Place en 2004, et
Uprising (2006). En 2007, trois grandes
scènes de Londres – The Place, Southbank
Centre et Sadler’s Wells – lui ont passé
commande de l’œuvre In your rooms, qui lui
a valu une nomination pour le South Bank
Show Award et pour laquelle il a obtenu, en
2008, le prix du Critics Circle pour la meilleure
chorégraphie (moderne).
À la demande générale, le chorégraphe
met sur pied, en 2008, une compagnie de
danse internationale formée de danseurs
exceptionnellement doués qui interprètent
ses œuvres un peu partout dans le monde.
En 2009 il crée, à la mythique Roundhouse
de Londres,The Choreographer’s Cut, une
commande du Sadler’s Wells pour laquelle il
remanie son très applaudi programme double
Uprising/In your rooms, afin de mettre en
scène un orchestre de 20 musiciens aux côtés
d’une compagnie de 17 danseurs. Cette même
année, le Brighton Festival lui commande la
pièce The Art of Not Looking Back, une œuvre

The success of the show gained the Company
the worldwide attention they deserved, and
they have since toured their repertoire to
Australasia, United States, Asia, and across
Europe gaining a huge following. Hofesh then
re-visited the work in 2011 to create Political
Mother: The Choreographer’s Cut which
featured a full band of 24 musicians and
16 dancers.
In January 2012 Hofesh collaborated with
the visual artist Antony Gormley on Survivor,
a unique production at The Barbican, and July
created the first work for the UK-wide youth
dance company U.Dance Ensemble, which
premiered at the Southbank Centre in
July 2012.
Hofesh is an Associate Artist of Sadler’s
Wells and Hofesh Shechter Company is
Resident Company at Brighton Dome.

« délicieusement acerbe » (The Observer,
2009) inspirée par six danseuses et destinée à
ces dernières.
En mai 2010, il crée sa première œuvre
intégrale, Political Mother, au Brighton Festival.
La chorégraphie, interprétée par dix danseurs
entourés d’un groupe de huit batteurs et
guitaristes électriques, est exécutée sur
fond de musique de cinéma composée par
Shechter lui-même. Le succès remporté par
cette œuvre permet à la compagnie d’attirer
sur elle une attention bien méritée à l’échelle
internationale. Elle a depuis porté les œuvres
à son répertoire en tournée en Australasie,
aux États-Unis, en Asie et partout en Europe,
récoltant une horde d’admirateurs.
Shechter a revisité l’œuvre en 2011,
proposant une adaptation pour 24 musiciens
et 16 danseurs intitulée Political Mother :
the Choreographer’s Cut.
Fruit d’une collaboration avec le plasticien
Antony Gormley, l’œuvre singulière Survivor
du chorégraphe a été créée au Barbican
en janvier 2012. Puis en juillet, l’ensemble
U.Dance, compagnie de danse jeunesse qui se
produit partout au Royaume-Uni, interprète sa
première œuvre, chorégraphiée par Shechter,
au Southbank Centre.
Hofesh Shechter est artiste associé au
Sadler’s Wells et sa troupe éponyme est
compagnie résidente au Brighton Dome.
