Dear Madam and Sir,
I act as an estate management consultant to The Body Shop who have asked me to respond to the
notification of the above application on the adjacent property.
My client wishes to object strongly to the erection of this canopy as it blocks the view along the length
of the street, adversely affecting the street scene and the urban environment, especially as it is largely
employed as a smoking shelter, is hardly attractive in use and generates litter.
It completely screens my client's own shop front, and indeed the rest of the upper end of this side of
the High Street from the sight of the majority of shoppers as they pass along the far busier Fore
Street. This has resulted in a significant drop in trade over the past six or so months that the canopy
has been in existence and complaints from customers saying that our Taunton store is hard to locate.
The Body Shop prides itself on providing a high quality environment to its customers and this
projection is extremely damaging to that, as well as to the draw that the Body Shop, as a destination
occupier, provides to the upper part of the High Street.
I also note that the applicant has provided tables and chairs on the pavement which are surrounded by
completely obscure screens carrying further advertising. Does this advertising not also need your
consent?
