Automatic Writing
This is an exercise I use a lot
when writing poetry. The rule is
to write for 2-3 minutes without
stopping and without the pen
leaving the paper. You can use
the sentence below as a prompt
to start you off. Don’t woprry if it
sounds like nonsense. Just write!
Tip: If you get stuck just
write the first thing that
comes to mind, or use the
last letter you’ve written
as the first letter of the
next word. Badgers are wild
animals…So many can be seen in the
countryside….

Stealing a poem
- Mon Cartable -
- My Schoolbag-
Mon cartable a mille odeurs. Mon cartable sent la pomme,
Le livre, l’encre, la gomme,
Et les crayons de couleurs.
Mon cartable sent l’orange,
Le buisson et le nougat.
Il sent tout ce que l’on mange
Et ce qu’on ne mange pas.
La figue et la mandarine,
Le papier d’argent ou d’or,
Et la coquille marine,
Les bateaux sortant du port.
Les longs cheveux de ma mère
Et les joues de mon papa,
Les matins dans la lumière,
La rose et le chocolat.
My schoolbag has one thousand smells.
My schoolbag smells of apple,
The book, the ink, the rubber,
And the coloured pencils.
My schoolbag smells of the orange
The bushes and nougat.
It smells of all we can eat
And all we can’t eat.
The fig and the tangerine,
(My) Your (Schoolbag) cat
The gold paper or silver,
(has) doesn’t make (one
And the marine shell,
thousand) any (smells) sound….
The sails going out the harbour Not when it prances along the wall,
Not when it stalks paw for paw
The long hair of my mother
Through the …etc
And the cheeks of my father,
The morning in the light,
The rose and the chocolate.

Write down what you can
see/hear/smell/feel/ taste in the picture.
Allow extra time if doing dictionary work.
Poems are descriptive. Use
the description you have
collected to create a small
poem based on the picture.
Which of these is a poem?
Every poem has a very
distinct shape.
Some poets feels that the
blank space around the
poem is as important as the
words themselves.
Using your automatic
writing from earlier, cut the
text up and stick it back
together in the shape of a
poem.
