Elliott Barnes au Musée Carnavalet
Du 20 au 25 mai 2014, de 10h à 18h - accès gratuit Elliott Barnes, architecte américain qui vit et travaille à Paris, investit les salles
Louis XVI du Musée Carnavalet.
En 1987, Il rejoint Andrée Putman : collaborateur, puis associé, il dirige son
agence de 1997 à 2003. Il crée elliott barnes interiors en 2004 et réalise de
multiples projets en France et à l’étranger.
L’exposition propose un dialogue entre les pièces de mobilier dessinées par
Elliott Barnes et les collections permanentes du Musée.
Cette installation met en lumière le processus d’abstraction – élément central
des créations d’Elliott Barnes – et l’impor tance des détails, qu’ils soient
fonctionnels ou ornementaux, dans la lecture et la compréhension d’un objet.
Les pièces de mobilier, la plupar t éditées par Ecar t International, sont réalisées
grâce au savoir-faire des meilleurs ar tisans d’ar t français. Ces savoir-faire sont
également à l’honneur dans les collections historiques du Musée Carnavalet.
Cette cohabitation permet un mouvement fluide, entre passé et présent. Le
regard se por te sur ce qui était, ce qui est et ce qui pourrait être, au sein de ce
lieu emblématique de Paris et de son histoire, le Musée Carnavalet.

The American Paris based architect Elliott Barnes occupies the Louis the 16th wing
of the Musée Carnavalet.
In 1987 he joined Andrée Putman in Paris. Collaborator and then partner, he
directed her office from 1997 until 2003. In 2004 he founded elliott barnes
interiors and has built diverse interior design projects in France and abroad.
The exhibition proposes a dialogue between furniture designed by Elliott Barnes
and the museum’s permanent collection.
The installation also highlights the process of abstraction –a central element in
Elliott Barnes’s designs- and the importance of detail whether functional or
ornamental in the reading and understanding of an object.
The furniture pieces some of which are distributed by Ecart International, are
executed thank to the talents of the most accomplished French artisans. This
“savoir-faire” is equally honored in the historical collection of the Musée Carnavalet,
which is dedicated to the history of Paris.
This coexistence permits a fluid movement between the past and the present. One’s
gaze is carried from what was, to what is and to what could be, at the heart of this
emblematic place of Parisian history, the Musée Carnavalet.
