Unit 1 – The World’s Second Home, New York, USA Vidéo 1 : Apollo Theater 1 [ 40 s ] Conseils d’exploitation Présentation Les débuts de l’Apollo Theater (p. 19) comme lieu important dans la culture afro-américaine de Harlem sont ici expliqués dans la perspective historique des années 30, période de la Dépression. Les élèves seront amenés à travailler les stratégies abordées dans l’unité 1 (comprendre l’anglais oral, p. 16-17). Propositions de mise en oeuvre Il serait judicieux de travailler cet extrait en classe puisqu’il illustre et permet d’approfondir un aspect de la vie new-yorkaise abordé dans la première unité du manuel. Le débit du discours semblera rapide pour beaucoup d’élèves, il est important de commencer par une première écoute globale, puis de procéder à une deuxième écoute plus détaillée. Le visionnage de la vidéo et le remplissage de la fiche d’exploitation prendront environ 20 minutes. Le travail pourra se faire suite à l’étude du document sur l’Apollo Theater (p. 17) afin de mettre en valeur l’histoire afro-américaine du quartier. Pour aller plus loin - - Le but est de comprendre ce qui rend ce lieu si spécial et aujourd’hui mythique. Faire le lien entre la Dépression et l’essor du jazz (le besoin important de gagner de l’argent dans une société où les Noirs n’avaient pas les mêmes opportunités que les Blancs. Un travail internet sur quelques musiciens clés (Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday) pourra personnaliser les détails historiques abordés en discussion). On pourra demander aux élèves (en groupes) de présenter une chanson, ou seulement les paroles, d'un de ces chanteurs.
