® Since its introduction three decades ago, the SPEX SamplePrep Shatterbox® has become the most popular “swing mill” in America. It remains the most efficient way to pulverize up to 100 grams of brittle material to analytical fineness. Shatterboxes typically grind cement, rocks, slags, soils, ceramics, and ores, but have been used for hundreds of other materials including sulfur pellets, dried marsh-grass, and pharmaceuticals. Both mills are CE compliant. Programmable, Portable, and Safe This enclosed, advanced design features the ease of use of a cam-action clamp. The clamp bar is held down securely by a cam-activated lever. The electronic controls allow programmed running times up to 10 minutes. As the Shatterbox runs, the timer display counts down the minutes and seconds remaining. A “pause” function allows interruption of a grinding cycle. Safety features include a safety interlock and gas cylinders for the lid. The interlock holds the lid closed whenever the mill is running, and the cylinders control movement of the lid when it is opened or closed. The sound-insulated steel cabinet has a cooling fan to prevent the motor from overheating and lockable casters with which the mill can be moved about the lab and then fixed in place. (60 cm) Weight: 135 lbs. gross (61 kg) Voltage: 115 V/60 Hz or 230 V/50 Hz Motor: 1/3 horsepower @ 825 RPM The original SPEX SamplePrep swing mill was developed for cement plants and steel mills with open, noisy lab conditions, and is still used in many locations where the working environment requires a rugged, simple mill. The motor is protected by a perforated shield to allow ample air-cooling for continuous running and a rubber “skirt” shields the drive mechanism but is easy to move aside when the drive belts need replacement. The 8500 Shatterbox can be plugged into a standard lab timer. It is shipped with a rubber-matted plywood base to prevent it from “walking” during operation. Inside the container are the sample, a puck, and (in larger containers) a ring. As these grinding elements swing free inside the container, the sample is rapidly crushed between the walls of the container, puck, and rings, and further reduced by the millstone-like action of the puck and ring against the container floor. Grinding times are usually between two and five minutes, with resultant particle size well below 200 mesh. With grinding aids, smaller samples can be reduced below 10 microns. Shatterbox® Grinding Action SPEX SamplePrep Grinding Containers 8501 Hardened Steel 8504 Tungsten Carbide 8505 Alumina Ceramic The standard SPEX Sample Prep Grinding Container, is available in a variety of materials. Maximum grinding loads for cement, rock, slag, etc. are 60 mL for the tungsten carbide container, 50 mL for the steel, and 40 mL for the ceramic containers. There are also small grinding containers available in hardened steel or tungsten carbide which can be run three at a time in the 8507R Rack. These have a maximum sample size of 20 mL. For especially large samples with a maximum size of 100 mL, the oversize steel grinding container can be used. 8506 Zirconia 8507 Small Hardened Steel 8521 Large Hardened Steel Accessories Grind up to three samples at a time with the 8507R Rack. It holds one or three 8507 or 8508 grinding containers and lifts easily in and out of the Shatterbox. Other available Accessories include the 31688 Friction Disc, a durable rubber pad which reduces operating noise and wear, and the 8525 Transporter, specifically designed to lift and hold all large Shatterbox dishes while transporting them between the sample preparation and Shatterbox areas. 203 Norcross Avenue • Metuchen, NJ 08840 Tel: 732.549.7144 • Fax: 732.906.2492 8507R Rack, Shown with Three 8508 Grinding Containers 800.522.7739 (800.LAB.SPEX) E-mail: [email protected] Online Ordering www.spexcsp.com
