In 1902,
1902 14 year-old Calixte Veulemans leaves his hometown Hoeleden in
the Limburg county to work as a helper in several cafes in Brussels. After a
while he becomes a waiter at Friture Henri,1
Henri Rue Rempart des Moines. He buys
the place, and a few years later renames it ' Chez Calixte '. His friendly and
smiling attitude attracts many friends and clients in a very short period.
In July 1921,
1921 this ambitious young man, acquires an old post house on Rue des
Bouchers: "Aux
Aux Armes de Bruxelles".

This tavern used to welcome coachmen stopping at an old staging post located
on rue de la Fourche, hence it name which refers to the “arms” of the capital
city. Calixte, working relentlessly, quickly transformed it into a prestigious
restaurant.
At that time, mussels were transported by canal boat and they did not arrive
every day. Calixte solved this problem by making a deal with a Dutch man from
Yerseke and managed to receive fresh mussels everyday by truck. In 1921, he
invents a new manner of serving mussels, by bringing them in individual pans.
This habit will become an earthy symbol of our country. Calixte’s great gift for
business and creativity did not stop there. He also invented “les moules à
l’escargot” (snail mussels), a typically Belgian name for mussels cooked in the
oven with garlic butter.
Highly renown for its fine cuisine, this restaurant steeped in history has
received several key figures who often became faithful clients.

favourite meal at least once a month.
Likewise many artists and show-business personalities. To name a few: Jacques

Simon, Toots Thielemans, Johnny Hallyday…

Group’s bookings must be made with the sales department
A booking is valid when confirmed by the sales department
Rates :
The indicated rates are net, confidential, and include all taxes. The rates
apply to groups of at least 10 persons, non-cumulative with any other offer and are valid
form 15/10/2014 to 30/12/2015
Except : 24,25,31 December and 01 January
Menus
The choice of menu and dishes must be communicated before the group’s arrival,
preferably at the time of booking but at the very latest 48 hours before the date of the
banquet.
The menu choice must be identical for the whole party.
In case of unforesseen circumstances ‘Force majeure’ the sales department has the
right to modify the selected menu (a similar or superior dish will then be proposed).
Size :
The final size of the group must be communicated at least 24 hours before the group’s
arrival : the final invoice will be based on this information.
If the actual size is reduced by 10 % or more, cancellation costs will be charged.
These costs will be 50 % of the difference between the confirmed size and the actual
served, based on the price of the agreed menu.
Payment and invocie :
Unless agreed differently in advance, the bill is paid on the spot or before the group’s
arrival (pre-payment of 50 %).
We accept payment in cash or with credit card.
Invoices are based on the booked size : any reduction not informed at least 24 hours
in advance and confirmed by the sales department will not be taken into account for the
final invoicing.
Any cancellation not communicated 24 hours before the group’s arrival at the latest
will be fully charged (no show).
Liability :
The restaurant that welcomes the groups is not liable for loss, theft or degradation to
personnal possessions of the customers in any way.
Applicable law and disputes
The relations of the sales department are subject to Belgian law.
The commercial tribunal of Brussel is the only competent in case of dispute.
