on the attack à l`attaque
ON THE ATTACK À L’ATTAQUE At over 2m in height, Sebastien Ruette certainly has a physical advantage over other players when it comes to attacking a volleyball. However, his consistent execution as an attacker is what is quickly gaining him a reputation as one of the game’s premier offensive players. Here, just after take-off, Sebastien displays the classic in-air body position favoured by many of the world’s great attackers. The non-attacking arm is outstretched and reaching towards the ball, the attacking arm is drawn back with the elbow kept high and well behind the hitting shoulder, and the knees are slightly bent. From this “bow and arrow” position, Sebastian will be able to generate maximum power – something that is crucial at the international level. In the second photo, veteran Janis Kelly – one of Canada’s best ever attackers – challenges the huge Russian block. Janis makes sure her body is fully extended at contact and then reaches as high as possible to strike the ball. Notice also how she brings her non-attacking arm into her body to help maintain good balance. Her hand is open, relaxed and curved to the shape of the ball at contact. This helps her to main tain good control. Janis is executing a sharp cross-court attack or ”cut shot,” to take advantage of the late-closing middle blocker. To execute such a sharp attack, she has turned her hand so that it faces more into the court. This allows her to make contact on the outside of the ball and create a sharper attack angle. It also adds to the deception of the shot because her current body facing does not indicate she will direct the ball so far crosscourt. The Russian outside blocker was certainly fooled, as she is positioned nowhere near where the ball will be crossing the net. Chalk up another kill for Kelly and another point for Canada. 2 1 1 Volleyball Canada Magazine by/par Doug Anton Technical Director/Directeur Technique - Volleyball Canada
