Algemeen Secretariaat • Secrétariat Général • Generalsekretariat • Secretariat General • Secretaría General www.eurofedop.org PostEurop Plenary Assembly 2015 Limassol (Cyprus), 14-15 October 2015 PostEurop is the association which represents the European public postal operators. It has 52 members in 49 countries. Its goal is to promote the postal services, in particular mail and parcel services, which are the key elements of its members’ activities. Each year, it organises a Plenary Assembly for its members and stakeholders. The European postal workers federations UNI and Eurofedop were invited to participate in this year’s Plenary Assembly which took place in Limassol, Cyprus. Bert Van Caelenberg, Secretary General, represented Eurofedop. 1. Opening session in the morning of 14 October Jean-Paul Forceville, Chairman of PostEurop, held a presentation on the organisation’s mid-term strategy of constant innovation and adaptation to the changes deeply affecting the postal sector with the ever increasing popularity of the Internet, also as a means to buy goods and services. An important part of PostEurop’s work focuses on the development of activities through ‘Committees’, ‘Circles’ and ‘Transversals’. In a way, they can be compared to the trade council activities of CESIEUROFEDOP. Spokesmen of those groups were given the floor to give a survey of the progress they made during the past year and what their plans are for the future. For your information, please find an organigram of the groups enclosed. See also the PostEurop website: PostEurop Activities, for more detailed information on the groups’ activities. Lunch was offered to the participants, during which Bert Van Caelenberg had interesting conversations with the CEOs of Albania, Italy, the UPU (Universal Postal Union), and others. PostEurop Plenary Assembly 2015 2 Business Forum ‘Taking on the Challenges’ on Thursday, 15 October Botond SZEBENY, Secretary General of PostEurop, gave an introduction on the Business Forum. He made it clear that postal operators want to be seen as renewing the sector, reinventing the post and increasingly responding to the needs of the new digital generation. Ms Melanie FAITHFULL KENT, COO of Hill + Knowlton Strategies spoke about why perception matters. She raised the question if the ‘postal brand’ conveys a backward-looking traditional picture or is it relevant to the online, cross border world? And how can postal operators transform their brand into something exciting and dynamic that is attractive, conveying how they want to be viewed? Later on, Ms FAITHFULL KENT also moderated a panel discussion on ‘Refreshing and Renewing Brand Perception’. Dominique BAILLY, Human Resources Officer at the Groupe La Poste (France) and Chair of PostEurop’s Corporate Social Responsibility Circle, made an appeal for having a wider impact on society through corporate social responsibility. Mr Bailly is also Chair of the EU’s social dialogue committee for the postal sector and participated in Eurofedop’s seminar in Ljubljana (24-26.09.2015), where he spoke about changes in the postal sector as a result of the digital revolution and the important role for social dialogue in dealing with those changes. 3. UPU Regional Strategy Conference, 14 October in the afternoon The Universal Postal Union (UPU) was established in 1874 and has its headquarters in Berne, Switzerland. With 192 member countries, it sets the rules for international mail exchanges and makes recommendations to stimulate growth in mail, parcel and financial services volumes and improve the quality of service for customers. The UPU’s Regional Strategy Conference was divided into three parts: 1) From Doha to Istanbul. The UPU’s last strategic congress was held in Doha, Qatar, in 2012 and the next will be held in Istanbul, Turkey, in 2016. One of the speakers was PostEurop’s secretary general, Botond Szebeny, who spoke about the challenges for PostEurop Members. 2) Panel discussion: Istanbul world postal strategy. The discussion focussed on three goals to be reached: improve the interoperability of networks infrastructure, foster effective market functioning and ensure sustainable and modern products. 3) Special session – UPU 2020. Mr Bishar Hussein, Director General of UPU, underlined that postal service companies should not be content with preserving the status quo. Changes are a must.
