Cet indicateur est appelé nombre équivalent car il fournit théoriquement le nombre de marchés de même taille qui donnerait lieu au même degré de concentration des exportations que celui observé dans la réalité. Plus cet indicateur est élevé, plus les exportations de ce pays sont diversifiées. Strategie des pays emergents Specialisation internationale • Biais possible si fort desequilibre commercial. • Correction possible : voir Grubel et Lloyd (1975) ou Aquino (1978) • Fontagne et Peridy (1995 ; CEPII Working Papers) soulignent qu’il est artificiel de ne prendre qu’une partie des flux de commerce comme de l’intra-branche (respectivement de l’inter-branche) a partir du moment ou exports et imports sont peu (tres) differents. • Un secteur ou 0.95<X/M<1.05 est intra-branche (totalite de X et de M). • Un secteur ou X/M<0.95 ou X/M>1.05 est inter-branche (totalite de X et de M). • Puis ils differencient a l’interieur de l’intra-branche le commerce de qualites et de varietes selon importance des differences de VU moyenne. • Il est aussi important de le mesurer bilateralement et non multilateralement.
