MONTREAL
FAITH ENRICHMENT CONFERENCE
The diocese of Montreal hosted its 5th Faith
Enrichment Conference on Fri. Nov 3 and Sat.
Nov. 4, 2006. Some 400 people attended. What
began a few years ago as an effort to offer
formation to new catechists has grown into a
full 2-day event offering sessions across a
broad spectrum of topics: Ecumenism, Social
Justice, Catechetics, Scripture, Sacraments,
AIDS and the Catholic Church, to name a few.
There was a respectable Salesian presence at
the conference: Bro. Robert Di Pede spoke on
youth and the formation of one’s true identity.
Fr. Mike Pace gave a session on baptism as the
basis of all that catechists do. Sr. Isabel Correa
spoke on youth spirituality, and Sr. Francine
offered a session on servant leadership. A very
special Salesian guest made a short but much
appreciated visit: none other than Cardinal
Oscar Rodriguez. He was in town the same
weekend by invitation of the Spanish Speaking
Mission of Montreal.

procession and daisies (English for the Italian
“margarita”) were carried in by various
Cooperators and placed in vases to adorn the
image near the ambo. At St- Joseph, Fr.
Dominique Britschu preached on Mama
Margaret in French, while at Missione Maria
Ausiliatrice, Fr. Giuseppe Costamagna and Fr.
Enzo Trigatti did the honours in Italian, and Fr.
Richard Authier in English. Finally, prayer
cards were made in French, English and Italian,
and distributed to all parishioners. On Sunday
evening, Sr. Alphonsine Roy and the Salesian
Sisters hosted an evening at the Centre Laura
Vicuna for the Salesian Family which included
a PowerPoint presentation on the life of Mama
Margaret, party games, prizes and good eats.
The event brought FMAs, SDBs, DBVs and
Cooperators together in a much appreciated
spirit of family and celebration. Quite
unanimously we felt that our parishioners took
warmly to the person of Mama Margaret,
showing us that holiness is indeed within the
grasp of the simple and the ordinary.

VENERABLE MARGARET
OCCHIENA BOSCO
In Montreal, our celebrations in honour of
Mama Margaret were held on Sunday,
November 19. At St. Joseph Parish and at
Missione Maria Ausiliatrice, Mama Margaret
was the focus of all our Sunday Masses. The
Salesian Sisters and the Cooperators organized
the special details included in these
celebrations. For example, all the lectors that
day were Salesian Cooperators; the prayers of
the faithful were written with a Salesian theme
SHERBROOKE
EN BREF : VIE AU SALÉSIEN
- Ces jours-ci, notre chargement habituel
d’oranges et de pamplemousses est arrivé de la
Floride : 10 500 caisses. Le tout a été distribué
aux quatre coins de la ville de Sherbrooke en
une couple de jours. Cette levée de fonds était
l’aboutissement d’une intense campagne menée
par les élèves et le personnel.
- Grand spectacle au Théâtre Granada le 29
novembre. Les élèves du Salésien montaient
Starmania et les profits étaient versés à la
Fondation des Maladies du Cœur.
- En vue de l’année scolaire 2007-2008, nos
Portes Ouvertes virent défiler quelque 425
jeunes et leurs familles. Les examens
d’admissions se sont tenus les 18 et 25
novembre.
- Le 4ième Mérite de la Fondation du SS a été
décerné cette année à M. Cécilien Mathieu et
M. Louis Lévesque, un ancien de la promotion
’71.
- Nos futurs explorateurs de la civilisation
maya- ils seront 36 -- offriront un souper à
saveur mexicaine le 9 décembre afin de
recueillir des fonds pour leur expédition en
mars prochain, la Route Maya au Mexique.
EN COMMUNAUTÉ :
On a voulu souligner, comme partout ailleurs
dans le monde salésien le 150ième anniversaire
de la mort de la maman de saint Jean Bosco,
comme aussi le grand événement de la
déclaration de Vénérable, étape majeure vers la
sainteté officielle.
- le thème étudié avec les salésiens
coopérateurs fut sa vie et quelques traits
de sa sainteté.
- Les 9 jours précédant l’anniversaire (25
nov.), on a prié le texte publié par Maria
Ausiliatrice, Mtl.
- Le 20/11, journée pédagogique, une
conférence fut donnée au personnel du
Séminaire par le P. Trottier, retraçant
l’influence
éducative
de
Maman
Marguerite dans la vie de son fils et son
apport au Système Préventif. Le dîner fut
ensuite offert par la communauté.
- Le 27/11, ce fut au tour de nos
« mamans Marguerite » d’être invitées :
les dames qui collaborent à notre œuvre,
ainsi que 2 mamans de salésiens qui
demeurent à Sherbrooke, Mmes Rollande
Lantagne et Lyse Léonard. Après un
court exposé sur Maman Marguerite,
mère de prêtre et coopératrice, présenté
par le P. Trottier et suivi d’une
célébration de la Parole, avant de
partager un bon repas préparé par
Michelle -comme Marguerite l’aurait fait,
mais sans la polenta! - le P. Alain a voulu
exprimer la reconnaissance de la
communauté en rendant hommage et
remettant à chacune un superbe panier de
fruits (un peu plus lourd que celui que
Marguerite portait ce 3 novembre 1846
lorsqu’elle fit le trajet à pied des Becchi
au Valdocco avec Jean…). Une
sensibilisation est envisagée avec les
élèves à un autre moment.
À la mi-novembre, comme c’est la coutume
depuis quelques années, nous nous sommes
rendus au Repos St-François d’Assise à
Montréal prier sur la tombe de nos consœurs et
confrères défunts. Les sœurs salésiennes -quelques-unes aussi du NB et de Toronto -- se
sont jointes à nous pour ce moment de prière et
de recueillement avant de partager tous
ensemble au bon repas à La Stanza, rue Jarry.
Le matin la communauté de Sherbrooke s’était
rendue à l’église St-Joseph, accueillie par les
PP. Georges et Dominique. Après un
intéressant exposé et partage avec le P.
Dominique Britschu sur le Da mihi animas… -faisant appel, bien sûr, à la symbolique et au
sens spirituel et pastoral de l’héraldique! -nous étions les invités des confrères de Maria
Ausiliatrice pour -- et oui, vous l’avez deviné
encore! -- un bon dîner italien à la Carmela.
Dans l’après-midi, avant la visite au cimetière,
nous avons échangé sur le 1er pôle du thème du
Chapitre Général – Da mihi animas, caetera
tolle : Retour à DB -- et nous avons célébré
l’Eucharistie présidée par le P. Alain.
Du 28 au 1er décembre, grâce aux 2 canaux
catholiques que nous avons -- Sel et Lumière et
EWTN -- nous avons pu suivre à divers
moments le voyage historique et émouvant de
Benoît XVI en Turquie.
Et maintenant, en marche vers Noël! Je
le souhaite heureux pour tous nos lecteurs.

TORONTO-HAMILTON
Fr. Joseph Occhio who is recuperating from
his hip surgery traveled to both New York and
Washington in mid-November and this after
only one month out of the hospital. He now
walks with the aid of two canes. Talk about
bouncing back! We celebrated his 83rd birthday
on November 17th. -- Fr. Paul Bedard arrived
here in early November to help out with our
parish ministry. He will remain with us over the
Christmas season. What a blessing he is! We
also celebrated his 80th birthday on November
16. -- Fr. Joseph Ho preached a week-long
spiritual retreat to a community of Chinese
Carmelites in Zephyr, ON, during the first
week of November. In her letter of thanks the
Prioress said: “He exhorted us to love our
unseen God by loving those whom we can see
around us,”
Our community held its first quarterly
recollection at St. John the Divine Anglican
Convent on November 3 and 4. The theme
developed was the life and spirituality of St.
Mary Dominic Mazzarello. This was done
with the help of a DVD and video. -- Fr. Frank
Kelly was elected as our delegate to our
upcoming Provincial Chapter to be held Easter
week in Montreal. Fr. Drago Gacnik was
elected the substitute. -- St. Benedict’s
parish has chosen the Rector Major’s words,
“The Family, Cradle of Life” as its Advent
theme. Two parishioners composed a song for
this occasion.
Bro. Bernie Dubé has just concluded 14
retreats with grades 9, 10 and 11 classes at Don
Bosco Secondary School. In addition he helped
prepare for the Salesian Leadership Retreat
held at Jackson’s Point on Lake Simcoe. There
were over 60 teenagers in attendance. There
were also participants from Montreal with Fr.
Mike and Bro. Robert. Bro. Bernie is also
animating a prayer group twice a month of a
dozen young adults. They are preparing to
participate in the International Eucharistic
Congress to be held in Quebec City in June
2008. The Saint Dominic Savio Club of St.
Benedict’s parish is in its 15th year of operation.
This year over 120 members gather twice a
week in the church hall for recreation, prayer
and cheerfulness. This year Fr. George is
chaplain.
The Preparatory Commission for the
Provincial Chapter composed of Frs. Richard
Authier, Romeo Trottier, Mike Pace and
George Harkins held their first meeting in
Montreal on November 30. Thanks to the
diligent preparation by the moderator, Fr. Mike,
much progress was accomplished.
The St. Benedict Centre of Salesian
Cooperators promotes a specific project of aid
entitled “Education in Haiti” for the coming
year. A fund raising event will be organized in
early Spring to help the poorest children of the
poor. Mr. Michel Jobin is the local coordinator.
The DB Residence community will host the
Salesian Family Christmas party on December
22. Prayer, food, drink, song and joviality will
be the order of the day.

MONTRÉAL
Centre Laura Vicuña. Journée mondiale de
réjouissance dans la Famille alésienne. Maman
Marguerite, la sainte maman de Don Bosco, est
déclarée Vénérable. Elle est considérée, à juste
titre, le berceau de l’œuvre salésienne, comme
le dit si bien Teresio Bosco : « La
Congrégation Salésienne fut bercée sur les
genoux de Maman Marguerite ». A toutes les
messes des paroisses Marie-Auxiliatrice, StJoseph et Ste-Claire, les SDB, les FMA, les
Salésiens Coopérateurs et Coopératrices sont
représentés. La liturgie est soignée et les
homélies axées sur les vertus de cette humble
maman, modèle approprié en ces temps
modernes.
Le soir du 19, vers 19h, au Centre Laura
Vicuña, les Sœurs de la maison provinciale
reçoivent les SDB, les FMA, les Coopérateurs
et les Volontaires de Don Bosco. Ils sont une
quarantaine, tous très enthousiastes et fiers de
cette nouvelle bénédiction sur notre famille. La
présentation d’un PowerPoint offre une bonne
synthèse de la vie de Maman Marguerite.
Cette présentation est suivie d’un moment
d’approfondissement et de partage animé par
Josée Paquet, sc, puis d’un temps de prière.
Quelques jeux animés, éléments essentiels
d’une rencontre salésienne, apportent détente et
explosion de joie. Un goûter, participation de
chacun, donne l’occasion de se rencontrer et de
fraterniser. Ils sont tous repartis immensément
reconnaissants et heureux de ce rassemblement.
Cette journée nous a permis de goûter à la
grande richesse de la collaboration et de la
fraternité chez les membres de la Famille
salésienne canadienne.

SURREY, BC
The month of November entered with a
bang as the cheeks of Fr. Mario’s face began to
swell making him look like “Cheysa
Chipmonk.” Thinking that he might have a case
of the mumps, he went to a local clinic. The
luck of the draw was not in the making, for the
antibiotics he was prescribed ended up with
him having an allergic reaction. His lips, hands
and soles of his feet began to blister, and
consequently his voice was weak. What a sight
for sore eyes! We covered for him, distributing
Communion at all the weekend Masses.
At our Monday community meeting it
was decided to honour Mama Margaret at all
the Masses on Sunday, Nov. 12, since the
liturgical Feast of Christ the King was
celebrated at the end of the month. All the
confreres’ homilies tied in very nicely with the
widow’s mite gospel. During that week, the
school children’s “thought for the day”
revolved around Mama Margaret’s love for
her sons and family. It was an inspiring
viewpoint making her come alive for our youth.
Nov. 12 also happened to be Bro.
Jerry’s 70th birthday. The parish staff celebrated
it on Friday the 10th after the luncheon meal
with the traditional birthday cake, candles and
song. The 50+ Club honoured Brother at their
Wednesday morning get together. Fr.
Provincial also arrived mid-afternoon from
Edmonton, and celebrated with the community.
Monday he gave us a mid-morning conference
enlightening us as to what is happening in the
province, and treated us to a birthday lunch out.
Father Richard left early the next morning for
Montreal.
Nov. 14 thru 17 Fr. Mario and Fr. Jan
attended the diocese Synod workshops that
were held in Harrison Springs, BC, while Fr.
John and Bros. Steve and Jerry manned the
fort. Then Bro. Steve flew from Vancouver via
Chicago to Newark, NJ, to attend the
Formation Workshop weekend held in Orange,
New Jersey. As for Bro. Jerry, he conducted a
2nd Workshop for the Ministers of Holy
Communion, who were scheduled to be
installed on the Feast of Christ the King. That
date was later moved to the 1st Sunday in
Advent. Fr. Mario recently flew to Calgary to
rest and regain his voice after a trying two
weeks.
On the 23rd Bro. Jerry flew into
Winnipeg to be with his sister, Mrs. Rosemary
Harper, who was hospitalized and seriously ill.
She died on November 29 at 2:37 pm,
Winnipeg time, at age fifty-nine years. Her
funeral is scheduled for December 4, with Fr.
Jan and Bro. Steve attending from Surrey, and
Fr. Luc and Bro. Dubé coming in from the
East.
Vancouver and its surrounding areas
were hit with a severe winter storm that
disrupted flights and all forms of travel.
Electricity failed in many sectors. Schools were
closed as were many other establishments. So
concluded an interesting month of November.

Interview : DON PASCUAL CHAVEZ
Don Pascual, comment êtes-vous devenu
salésien?
J’étais étudiant dans un collège salésien.
Ma mère était tombée malade. Un jour je suis
allé la visiter et elle me dit : « Mon fils, j’ai prié
le Bon Dieu d’avoir un fils prêtre, mais aucun
de tes frères ne veut le devenir ». Je lui ai dit :
« Je serai prêtre, maman ». Trois jours plus
tard, ma mère mourut. Peu de personnes étaient
au courant de cette conversation avec ma mère.
Voici donc l’origine de ma vocation.
Comment s’est passée votre formation?
J’étais un lecteur avide et je me souviens
qu’au séminaire je reçus la permission spéciale
de rester à la bibliothèque jusqu’à minuit. Les
grandes œuvres classiques latines et espagnoles
qui ont cherché le sens du mystère de l’histoire
et de l’homme me fascinaient. Puis les
supérieurs m’ont orienté vers l’étude de la
théologie et je me suis passionné pour les
Saintes Écritures. Après mon ordination, j’ai
étudié la Bible.
Qui furent vos professeurs?
Le recteur de l’université était le Cardinal
Carlo Maria Martini. À la faculté, mes
professeurs étaient de réputation célèbre,
comme Alonso Schökel, Albert Vanhoye,
Ignace de la Potterie et Stanislas Lyonnet, le
grand exégète de saint Paul.
Vous êtes le premier Recteur Majeur
pleinement latino-américain, étant né au
Mexique. Qu’est-ce que cela signifie pour vous
et pour la Congrégation?
Mon élection reflète la réalité internationale
et multiculturelle de la Congrégation et c’est
aussi le fruit de la vision de Don Bosco qui déjà
en 1875 envoyait la première expédition
missionnaire en Argentine. Tout cela est le
mérite des missionnaires italiens qui ont su
transmettre fidèlement en Amérique Latine le
charisme qu’ils avaient reçu de Don Bosco luimême.
Être le successeur d’un saint ne doit pas être
tâche facile? Comment vivez-vous cela?
Je m’efforce de le vivre comme on vit une
grande dignité. Avec une conscience aiguë de
ce que cela implique, non seulement pour la
Famille salésienne, mais aussi pour les milliers
de personnes dans le monde qui se sentent
attirées par le message éducatif de Don Bosco.
Et encore, avec un grand sens de responsabilité,
prenant soin d’adapter son message à l’époque
qu’il nous est donné de vivre. La clef est la
fidélité au charisme et également la créativité.
Croyez-vous que le message de Don Bosco est
d’actualité?
Plus que jamais! Le message de Don Bosco
est que Dieu aime les jeunes. Et en plus, Don
Bosco cherchait des adultes capables de
partager leur vie avec eux, partager leurs
projets.

Occhiena Bosco, a été déclarée
« Vénérable » le 15 novembre 2006. On
appelle « vénérables » ceux dont le décret
de l’héroïcité des vertus a été signé et lu
avec l’assentiment du Pape. Ce décret
constitue l’étape finale du long parcours
d’une cause.

car tu as fait de maman Marguerite,
une femme courageuse,
une mère héroïque
et une éducatrice pleine de sagesse.
