D'origine afro-américaine, ce chant s'est répandu aux Etats-Unis à la fin du siècle dernier. Après avoir
été, au cours des années 1950 - 1960, l'hymne d'espoir du "Civil Rights Movement" (mouvement pacifiste
inspiré par différent leader dont Martin Luther King), il est maintenant chanté par tous les opprimés
