Exhumation! - La Guinguette
Exhumation! 1 of 3 http://www.laguinguette.com/lejournal/2005/06soc/ Exhumation! Community cemeteries are part of the French landscape. The large tombs in memory of families, the personalised engravings, monuments that surprise sometimes by their flights of fantasy. And everywhere peaceful, flowered pathways, bordered by cypress trees. Families get together again below and above ground: the living bury their dead in their place of origin in general. But what do you do if a member of the family has the misfortune to die and be buried far from their loved ones? That's no problem, you transfer them. Stéphane Cosme reports. There we are! Shall I give them back to you? Thank you. There we are, madam. This document is the authorisation for the exhumation and transport of bodies, the remains of the bones which we'll put in a reliquary, we'll put them together. It was husband and a wife, so we can put them together. Theoretically we mustn't put strangers together. Let's say strangers who aren't father and daughter, mother and son, for example, who don't have a direct link. The sepulchre is coming to an end and then my parents' origins are in the centre of France. I bought an unlimited time plot in their village and well I'm a little bit... lets say that I have an ancestry culture and I'm bringing my parents back to their roots, there we are. It's an important passage, I couldn't not be here, even if I'm not... I'm not going to open the coffin, I'm not going to witness the changing of coffins. It's normal that I should accompany them. So we're beginning to see the coffin and there, that's what's left of the lining. So there's no more coffin. The coffin, there, it's completely disintegrated. When we find the coffin in a good state of preservation, we can only open it if five years have elapsed since death. José, where have we got to there? There we've arrived at the body. I begin with the skull and afterwards the rest, all the bones afterwards. Yes, what kind of a state is it in? Oui, c'est dans quel état? It's shrunken. Il est réduit. The body is completely dried out, even though it was in a plastified cover. We're lucky this morning, it's nice and packable. It's well shrunken. Really there are only a few bones left. There, that's the hip, that's the rest of the hip. We also find hip replacements, that happens sometimes, but when people say we find jewels, that's very unusual. Here we are the first body that's fully recovered... all the bones. No but when it's in a state like that, it's nothing. You have some cases sometimes where the hair, you 06/07/2006 14:11 Exhumation! On ouvre cela. C'est une habitude, par respect. http://www.laguinguette.com/lejournal/2005/06soc/ see the hair and the nails which have continued to grow and that's fairly frightening to see. There are some times where... we fear that life has more or less continued and that the person wasn't really dead when they were buried at the time, that's what it makes you think. At an exhumation recently I found someone who had their hand in the air as if he wanted to push open the lid. It's pretty remarkable. Well, we're going to lay down the box gently and we're going to open it. We open that. There we are commissioner, these are the gentleman's bones. The lady is still in the grave. OK, so they're from pretty much the same period, I think. That's right, the gentleman in 1960 and the lady in 1958. There are a lot of bones for the year, all the same. Like that, we'll have two bodies in the same reliquary, we'll put the two skulls side by side, the tibias and the others laid out practically always the same way. It's a habit, out of respect. Ah, Kader, José has a few small bones that he's just found. Is that still the first one? It's still the first one. We're going to get to the second one now. C'est toujours le premier ça? OK. C'est toujours le premier. On va arriver au deuxième maintenant. Am I shocked? As for being shocked, no it no longer shocks me. Well, I don't know, maybe it's habit. D'accord. I don't think you can get used to that. Me choquer? Quant à me choquer, non ça ne me choque plus. No, no. The habit of coming, well... it's clear that when you do this kind of thing, well there's not really anything to see. You only see the bones. Compared to coffin preparation, putting in a body that's just died not long ago, that's completely different. There, you see the teeth. There are two or three teeth left there. In the jaw, the lower jawbone too. The teeth are still on it. Il reste deux, trois dents là. And then if she had her stockings, if they were silk stockings, we'll find her feet in the stockings. Except that in 1958 I don't think there were many silk stockings left. Nylon was there already. Dans la machoire, le maxillaire inférieur aussi. Nylon was already there in 58, I think. Les dents sont encore au-dessus. When you find the legs in silk stockings, the stocking won't have changed atall, not atall. Have you got a lighter? Well there, that's a little blow torch or if you prefer we can maybe take the other one, but then again that one's very good as well, but... Maybe we'll take the other one as well. We'll wait to close it... There's nothing left José? Vous avez un briquet? Well let's close the reliquary. No there's nothing left there. 06/07/2006 14:11 Exhumation! Here, a little precision, seals are placed onto the reliquary which is, as you've seen, a little miniature coffin, because the body is going to be taken to another region. Il ne reste plus rien, José? There we are, so the reliquary, we put the lid on it and we're going to put in the screws. So there I'm going to melt the wax onto the screw which will be fixed by the gravedigger. So you have to be very careful that it doesn't run too much. I'm putting the seal on now. There we are. The imprint of the stamp will be formed in the wax. Now, if you wanted to break into this sepulchre, the stamp wouldn't show up again as it is showing very cleanly. So we're going to place the reliquary in a hearse because it has to be a vehicule which is equipped for this kind of transport. We can't do it in a car boot (trunk), in a van. You have to have a vehicule which does only that. It's the second exhumation that I've witnessed, in inverted commas because I didn't see anything, but I've already exhumed my grandparents and taken them back to their village of origin too. Yes I think it was in '92 or something like that and in those days you could transport the remains, the reliquaries yourself and so I carred them in the boot (trunk) of my car, a red Alfa Romeo, yes. Ah yes. 06/07/2006 14:11
