Observation – Interrogative Expressions in
Kathryn Steele Prof. Pamela Smart-Smith EDCI 5964 October 14, 2010 Lesson Plan – Observation – Interrogative Expressions in French, Salem High School French II STAGE 1: IDENTIFY DESIRED RESULTS: What will learners know and be able to do by the end of the lesson? A. Context/ Theme/ Topic/ “Big Idea”: Students will be able to ask descriptive questions to find out information in the target language. B. Objectives: Learners will be able to… • Identify interrogative expressions and questions. • Formulate personal questions using descriptive interrogative expressions. • Demonstrate a question-and-response conversation with a classmate. • Interpret descriptive questions and produce relevant responses to questions. C. Grammar/ Vocabulary: Grammar will focus on descriptive interrogative expressions and the grammatical formulation of questions. D. Goal Areas/ Standards: Virginia SOLs: FII.1: The student will exchange spoken and written information and ideas in French. FII.7: The student will develop a deeper understanding of the English language through study of French. Standards for Foreign Language Learning: 1.1 – Students engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions. 1.2 – Students understand and interpret written and spoken language on a variety of topics. 1.3 – Students present information, concepts, and ideas to an audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics. E. Learners: Students will have already had a lesson on basic yes-or-no questions using “Est-ce que.” Students will also have some familiarity, but less mastery, with descriptive interrogative expressions such as “Comment est-ce que,” etc. F. Materials: • PowerPoint presentation on interrogative expressions, with examples, created by Kathryn Steele • Transparency with oral activity questions, created by Kathryn Steele • Song lyrics with question words taken out and replaced with blanks; YouTube video of song “Comment Savoir,” adapted from the film Enchanted STAGE 2: DETERMINE ACCEPTABLE EVIDENCE: What evidence will show that learners have produced desired results? Informal assessments will be used for this lesson to determine that learners have produced desired results. Students will fill in the Kloze-style lyrics sheet with the appropriate question words after listening to the song once without the sheet and once with the sheet. Students will repeat question formulations during the PowerPoint presentation. Students will engage in conversation with their respective partners using the personal questions on the Oral Activity transparency. STAGE 3: PLAN LEARNING EXPERIENCES: What instructional activities are part of this lesson? A. What will learners do? • Students will take notes during PowerPoint presentation and will repeat question formulations when prompted. • Students will listen to the song “Comment Savoir” once without seeing the lyrics; then again with the fill-in-the-blanks lyrics sheet. Students will write the appropriate question words in the blanks. • Students will watch part of the YouTube video of the song “Comment Savoir.” • Students will participate in an oral activity with a partner where they ask one another personal questions and reply appropriately. Sample questions will be provided on transparency. B. What will I do? • I will present the PowerPoint on interrogative expressions in a clear and engaging manner, prompting students to repeat formulations as needed. • I will play the song “Comment Savoir” twice for the students, and will monitor their work on the Kloze lyrics sheets. • I will play part of the YouTube video for the song “Comment Savoir” for the students. • I will explain the oral activity and will monitor students partner-conversations, providing help when necessary. STAGE 4: REFLECT ON LESSON EFFECTIVENESS: How effective was this lesson? A. Did I achieve my lesson objectives? How do I know? I believe that my lesson objectives were achieved. Students took notes during the PowerPoint presentation and actively participated in oral activity practicing question formation. The students were able to ask and respond to one another’s questions effectively and accurately. B. What worked especially well and why? I think the students enjoyed the song activity at the beginning, as it was something a bit out of the ordinary and gave them an opportunity to listen to music in the target language. The paired oral activity at the end also seemed to work well in general, although there were a few students off-task. C. What would I change if I were to teach this lesson again? If I were to teach this lesson again, I might give the students print-outs of the slide notes beforehand so that they would not spend so much time writing things down; this will give them the opportunity to practice orally and develop comprehension. I will also monitor the oral activity at the end much more closely, making sure everyone is participating. « Comment savoir ? » - Adapté de la chanson « That’s How You Know » Comment sait-on qu’il vous aime ? Le voit elle dans vos yeux Comment sait-elle que tu l’aimes ? Lui montre-tu que tu l’aimes Est-ce que tu peux lui parler et lui dire que tu l’aimes ? A quoi sait-elle que tu l’aimes ? Lui montre-tu que tu l’aimes Est-ce que tu sais lui parler et lui dire que tu l’aimes ? L’amour est un cadeau qui n’est jamais garanti Et tu peux tout gâcher si jamais elle se dit Comment savoir s’il m’aime ? Comment savoir jamais ?
