Biography
Dr. Angang Hu was born on April 27, 1953 in Anshan City, Liaoning Province. Dr. Hu was
Ph.D. in Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, 1988. He did post – doctoral study at
Department of Economic, Yale University, 1991-1992. Dr. Hu had been to numerous world
famous universities as visiting scholar, researcher and professor over the years. Dr. Hu was
awarded Honorary Ph.D. by Far-eastern Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences early this
year.
Since 1985, Dr. Hu joined the China Study Group of Chinese Academy of Sciences as
one of the leading researchers and began to conduct China studies systematically. He is one of
the pioneers of this new field. At the beginning of 2000, Dr. Hu directed the Center for China
Study, one of the top think tanks for national decision making. He also worked as the chief
editor for China Studies Report, a circulated reference for senior officials.
In 1991, Dr. Angang Hu was awarded “Doctor with Special Contribution to China” by
the State Education Commission and Academic Degree Committee of the State Council. In
1995, Dr. Hu received sponsorship from “National Science Fund for Outstanding Young
Scientist” of the Natural Science Foundation of China and was awarded “Financial Aid for
Chinese Economic Research” from Ford Funds. Dr. Hu and his projects had received multiple
awards and prizes, such as two times first prize of the Science and Technology Progress
Awards by the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 2000, Dr. Hu’s project was awarded first
prize “National Science Fund for Outstanding Young Men” by the Natural Science
Foundation of China. In 2001, Dr. Hu won the 9th Sun Yefang Economic Essay Award (2000).
Dr. Angang Hu is a well-known Chinese economist and a leading researcher on China
Studies in both China and overseas. His research focuses on China’s macroeconomic
development and development policies. Dr. Angang Hu is a fruitful researcher. By September,
he has published a total of 43 books, among which 9 monographs, 20 collaborations as first
coauthor; 8 books published overseas with Chinese edition and 6 English edition books. Dr.
Hu has published nearly 200 articles in the core periodicals and key academic magazines in
China. His representative works are China State Capacity Report (1993), China Economic
Fluctuation Report (1994), China Regional Disparities Report (1995), Employment and
Development: China Unemployment Issue and Employment Strategies （ 1998 ） , China
Development Prospects（1999）, China: Fighting Against Corruption （2000）, China Strategy
Framework （ 2001 ） , Influential China Study Reports(2002), China’s Grand Strategies
(2002), China’s Second Generation Reform Ideology: Focused on System Building (2002),
