Bulletin de Veille de l’Océan Indien n°23 15 July - 22 July 2010 The aim of this bulletin is to report new health events occuring in foreign countries and presenting a potential risk for Indian Ocean populations. It does not intend to provide an exhaustive review of international alerts. The health events, collected from different official and non official sources are intended for the Indian Ocean. Despite our efforts to produce exact informations, some potential errors could occur : readers have to use these data with cautious. Neither the Indian Ocean Commission, nor the ORS and the CIRE is liable for the use that may be made of the informations contained in this bulletin. Philippines Dengue outbreak - 25 283 cases and 190 deaths since january 2010 - there is a 40% increase compared to 2009 - 18 055 cases in the same period in 2009 Risk of imported cases Malaysia sent, to avoid local transmission. Dengue outbreak - 2 478 cases and 11 deaths (7 deaths in all 2009) Advice for travelers about mosquito- Thaïland Dengue outbreak - 33 113 cases and 33 deaths since january 2010 - there is a 60% increase compared to 2009 Increased vigilance in countries where vectors (A.albopictus et A.aegypti) are pre- borne disease risk Measures to be taken : - protection against mosquito bite during the stay and 7 days after return - consult a doctor in case of sudden onset of fever in the week following the return trip Sri Lanka Dengue outbreak - about 20 000 cases and 148 deaths Myanmar Dengue outbreak - 990 cases and 6 deaths - 3 129 cases and 37 deaths in 2009 I N T E R N A T I O N A L Comments Thaïland (Phuket) Advice for travelers : healthy personal Hand foot et mouth disease outbreak - more than 70 cases - recent outbreak in China : enterovirus 71 has more often been associated with hand foot and mouth disease hygiene (regular hand washing, avoid close contact with infected persons) http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/tmp-pmv/2010/hfm-mpb07082010-eng.php India (Manipur) Japanese encephalitis outbreak - of the 40 samples tested 34 are positive - 3 deaths - viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes (Culex) - symptoms : high fever, headache, neck stiffness Japanese encephalitis is an endemic disease in Southeastern Asia. It is hyperendemic in the north of India, with outbreaks each year. Advice for travelers about mosquitoborne disease risk (protection against mosquito bites) Angola The wild poliovirus is still in Angola since Poliomyelitis outbreak - wild poliovirus type 1 - 15 cases since january 2010 - spreading risk into neighbouring countries 2007, where 8 cases were reported that year, and 29 cases each in 2008 and 2009. Advice for travelers : vaccinal recommandations http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/content/in-the-news/polio-outbreaks.aspx Malawi, Zimbabwe Measles outbreak - Malawi : about 50 000 cases and 166 deaths since january 2010 - Zimbabwe : outbreak under control Advice for travelers : All travelers should be up to date with their vaccines on all destinations Kenya Cholera outbreak - decreasing outbreak; no new reported case this week - total of 3 188 cases and 63 deaths since january 2010 Zimbabwe Choléra outbreak - decreasing outbreak Outbreaks under control I N D I A N O C E A N Comments Mauritius Influenza - out of 1 490 tested samples since january 2010 : 128 positive for AH1N1, 12 positive for B, 9 positive for AH3N2 and 331 positive (waiting for typage) - 2 deaths - vaccination of population since 2 weeks (monovalent vaccine) Active circulation of pandemic influenza Worldwide, overall pandemic influenza activity remains low. Active circulation of pan- Madagascar demic influenza virus persists in areas of Influenza - low flu syndrom number in Antananarivo : 0,9% consultations - out of 472 tested samples since january 2010 : 170 positive 72 A(H1N1)2009, 52 A unknown type, 28 AH3N2, 7 AH1N1 et 11 B - 2 confirmed cases A(H1N1)2009 during last two weeks : circulation of virus A(H1N1)2009 in Moramanga district the tropics, particularly in South and Sou- La Réunion theast Asia, the Caribbean and West Africa. Risk of imported cases Chikungunya outbreak decreasing - last confirmed case on 5th of July - Cumulative total of 103 confirmed cases and 33 probable cases Increased vigilance in countries where vectors (A.albopictus et A.aegypti) are present, to avoid indigenous tranmission.
