PRESS RELEASE Flow. When movement shapes our towns EXHIBITION FROM 4 APRIL 2012 – 26 AUGUST 2012 Cité de l’architecture & du patrimoine TEMPORARY EXHIBITIONS GALLERIES TUESDAY 3 APRIL 2012 Press preview: 5pm General preview: 7.30pm The exhibition offers the visitor the opportunity to follow the development of urban design through the ages and explore the urban spaces and buildings which are a consequence of man’s movement across the land. The exhibition incorporates both real-world movement, dating back thousands of years, together with today’s virtual movement. Streets and squares, roads, motorways or railways, ports, caravanserail, stations and terminals, compact cities and sprawling towns – these are just some of the places and concepts, born out of our desire for movement, which punctuate the history of our land. City of the Future, Harvey Willey Corbett, 1913 The Cité de l’architecture & du patrimoine is dedicating 1,500 m² of space to its next large exhibition on urban mobility, adopting a chronological, thematic and playful approach to the subject. Open to the public. Our lives are made up of moments of activity and inertia, comings and goings, arrivals and departures. Space within towns and between towns is organized to support this constant movement. From the earliest days almost, towns were structured to allow for both the gathering of men, and their accumulated wealth, and, at the same time, to facilitate movement and encourage meetings and interaction. The exhibition takes the visitor on a playful and sensory journey, presented as a theatre set. Reconstructed roads, computer generated images, films, soundtracks composed by Louis Dandrel and Bernard Lubat, transport the visitor through time and space, leading him to reflect on his environment and future. While the 20th century was characterised by a sort of “transport war” strongly influenced by the myth that progress equalled speed, the start of this century represents a time to question our travel and movement patterns. The exhibition makes numerous novel suggestions about how man can organize his life of motion. In this exhibition, Jean-Marie Duthilleul illustrates how town development should achieve a subtle balance – a balance that needs to be constantly adjusted – between movement and stillness, between places you stay in and places you pass through. When you design a town, you are designing a system to accommodate groups of people and allow for interaction. Thus the town is the result of a constant dialectic between mobility and immobility. From 4 April - 26 August 2012 Games area for children (from 5 years upwards) Inside the exhibition, Circuler. Quand nos mouvements façonnent les villes, there is a games area, specially designed for children and families. You can enjoy this experience together, in one of two ways: either by playing as a family or by participating in a supervised interactive workshop. In the middle of this area, there is a large model of the town built entirely from LEGO. In the workshop, you will find a scale representation of this imaginary town with its numerous interconnecting and co-existing modes of transport. This is the starting point for older children (7+ years) to play “your own journey.” In this game, the first team to connect the greatest number of tourist destinations wins – but beware! Danger lurks! A large mural of the town extends along the wall incorporating about twenty LEGO mosaics, depicting all the different types of transport: pushchair, scooter, bike, moped, small car etc. Series of symposiums and conferences Symposium - Wednesday 23 May 2012, all day A debate focusing on key architectural projects which redefine circulation space in the urban landscape. The projects, presented by their architects, will be followed by a discussion on the challenges and resources of these multimodal spaces set against the demands of cities and their influence. Encounters - Wednesday 16, 23, 30 May 2012 from 7pm-8.30pm Three fabulous meetings and four conferences will be held over the course of the exhibition, providing a forum for exchanges between intellectuals and key players in the world of travel ( transport contractors, planner, builders) Conferences – Tuesday March 5, Wednesday 6, Thursday 7 and Friday 8 June 2012, 7-9pm Four fabulous conferences, exploring the opinions of authors who have contributed to the exhibition catalogue..
