CMYK is a dizzying celebration of sound, colour and movement.
Director Marv Newland and animator Kunal Sen meticulously
assembled and manipulated a vast collection of CMYK (cyan,
magenta, yellow and black) symbols and registration guides,
uncovered from the hidden flaps of common printed materials like
cereal boxes. Freed from their workaday origins, these colourful
objects become moving artwork.
CMYK est une étourdissante célébration du son, de la couleur et
du mouvement. Le réalisateur Marv Newland et l’animateur Kunal
Sen ont soigneusement assemblé et manipulé une multitude de
symboles et de codes imprimés CMYK (cyan, magenta, jaune et
noir) trouvés sous le rabat d’emballages ordinaires comme les
boîtes de céréales. Libérés de leur fonction habituelle, ces objets
deviennent une véritable œuvre d’art animée.
Coloured dots pulsate chaotically, crosshairs roll in a languid motion
across the screen and primary shapes perform a compelling dance
with ever-changing moods.
Des pastilles colorées palpitent chaotiquement, des fils croisés
se tortillent langoureusement à l’écran et des formes primaires
exécutent une danse enlevante aux inflexions capricieuses.
Newland worked closely with composer Lisa Cay Miller and
the Quatuor Bozzini quartet to create a score rich with soundimage phrases and universal dynamism. Experimental in nature,
collaborative in form, the film is an unrestrained riot of colour and
energy—spontaneous and spectacular.
Fruit d’une étroite collaboration entre Mar v Newland, la
compositrice Lisa Miller et le Quatuor Bozzini, cette partition
remplie de riches phrases mêlant son et image est porteuse d’un
dynamisme universel. Expérimental par nature, collectif dans sa
forme, CMYK livre une débauche de couleur et d’énergie aussi
spontanée que spectaculaire.
Marv Newland’s animated motion
picture career began in Los Angeles
with the creation of the short Bambi
Meets Godzilla (1969). In 1975, he
founded the animated film production
company International Rocketship
Limited in Vancouver. At Rocketship,
Newland directed and produced over
twenty animated short films including
Sing Beast Sing, Black Hula, Pink
Komkommer and Beijing Flipbook.
Newland has received international
acclaim for his films, which use unusual approaches, such as
twenty-two animators on a single film (Anijam), and a short made
entirely of postcards (Postalolio). His films have received festival
prizes around the world, including the Grand Prix at the Annecy
International Animation Festival. CMYK is Newland’s third film for
the National Film Board of Canada.

Marv Newland entreprend sa carrière d’animateur à Los Angeles
avec la création du court métrage Bambi Meets Godzilla (1969).
En 1975, il fonde le studio d’animation International Rocketship
Limited à Vancouver, où il réalise et produit plus d’une vingtaine
de courts films d’animation, dont Sing Beast Sing, Black Hula,
Pink Komkommer et Beijing Flipbook. Ses films obtiennent la
reconnaissance internationale et font appel à des méthodes
inhabituelles, notamment une collaboration avec vingt-deux
animateurs pour un seul court métrage (Anijam), et une production
entièrement composée de cartes postales (Postalolio). Partout
au monde, ses œuvres récoltent de nombreux prix dans les
festivals, notamment le Grand Prix du Festival international du film
d’animation d’Annecy. CMYK est le troisième film que réalise Marv
Newland pour l’Office national du film du Canada.
