ÉCOLE INTERNATIONALE DE THÉÂTRE JACQUES LECOQ WORKSHOPS APRIL JULY SEPTEMBER 2015 www.ecole-jacqueslecoq.com APRIL INTRODUCTION TO PLAYING From 31 March to 4 April Teachers : Anne Astolfe – Paola Rizza This workshop proposes a discovery of the Lecoq School’s approach to theatrical play. It will be a journey that leads from psychological replay - the observation of life, its rhythms and dynamics and silences from which speech springs – through to the event of the Neutral Mask, which raises and structures play whilst seizing the poetic dimension of life. The workshop will explore this through Improvisation classes, accompanied by Movement Classes dealing with physical Preparation and Movement Analysis. This workshop is for beginners (From 18 years old) intersted in a first approach to the school’s teaching. The classes are given in French 10 am to 12.30 am – 2 pm to 4.30 pm / 25h / 500€ JULY PLAY AND MASKS From 27 to 31 July Teachers: Paola Rizza - Eric Nesci Playing masks is an essential foundation in the life of an actor. The mask enlarges, shapes and defines the actor’s play whilst clarifying the dramatic themes engaged. The mask imposes a transposition of life that carries the actor beyond the everyday, raising the level of play by shaping the body’s movements and gestures. During the workshop we will play with different types of masks. The neutral mask, larval masks, expressive masks, utilitarian masks, and «American» latex masks. This workshop nourishes the capacity of the actor to bring to life masks, revealing their humanity. The workshop is composed of physical preparation, movement classes and improvisation classes. The classes are given in French 10 to 12.30 am – 2 to 4.30 pm / 25h /500€ SEPTEMBER THE MOVEMENT OF TEXTS From 1st to 5 September Teachers: Susana Lastreto et Jason Turner The movement of texts: Chekhov, Pinter. The question for the actor and director is always the same: where and how to start working with a text? This workshop proposes to play texts by exploring their movement and space. This will nourish the play of situations, shape characters and suggest spatial relations and dynamics through an approach that doesn’t start from an exclusively psychological view. The text moves, it proposes a space. Characters move, both impelled by others, and as active agents, in a reciprocal play of dynamic, moving forces. They are pushed and pulled; and push and pull each other, themselves and the space around them. The actor’s body, its dynamics and spatial relations, is at the heart of this approach of finding the movement, space and meaning of texts. We will work on Modern Classics: Chekhov’s The Seagull and scenes from Harold Pinter. The workshop will include warm ups, movement preparation, improvisation and group work. The classes are given in French 10 to 12.30 am – 2 to 4.30 pm / 25h / 500€ SEPTEMBER Clown and Burlesque : PLAYING COMEDY From 7 to 11 September Teachers: Paola Rizza and Jos Houben Exploring the territory of comedy and laughter comes at the end of the student’s journey at lecoq’s school. At this end point, the Red Nose, the smallest mask in the world, mirrors and contrasts to the Neutral Mask, the biggest mask, discovered at the beginning of their journey. In the territory of comedy, that gets bigger as the world becomes tougher, we will focus on clown and slapstick. We will look for the clown’s condition, which frees the actors to play on their own idiosyncrasies and weaknesses, placing the public in a superior position so that they can laugh at their shared humanity We will search for: being caught between the naiveté of childhood and the emotional gravity of adulthood; the attempt to find a fragile and brief balance in unbalance; the unceasing conflict between ourselves and the world. This will be our way in to the universe of comedy and gags, where laughter is provoked by imbalance, falls, mis-timing, accidents and the multiple mistakes and errors that humanity in heir to.
