GUIDE TO VOCATIONAL
TRAINING IN ENGLISH
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
The admission requirements are established under sections 12, 13 and 14
of the Basic Vocational Training Regulation.
Admission to a program of study leading to a Diploma of Vocational Studies (DVS)
(Reference: sections 12 and 14)
To be admitted to a program leading to a Diploma of Vocational Studies (DVS), a person must:
• hold a Secondary School Diploma or have prior learning that is recognized as equivalent in accordance with
sections 232 and 250 of the Education Act
OR
• be at least 16 years of age on September 30 of the school year during which he or she begins his or her vocational
training and, according to the specific admission requirements for the program established by the Minister,
have earned the required Secondary III, IV or V credits in language of instruction, second language and Mathematics
or have prior learning* that is recognized as equivalent in accordance with sections 232 and 250 of the Education Act
OR
• be at least 18 years of age upon entry into vocational training and have the functional prerequisites, that is,
successful completion of the General Development Test (GDT) as well as, according to the specific admission
requirements for the program established by the Minister, have the specific prerequisites in language of instruction
and/or mathematics
OR
• have earned Secondary III credits in language of instruction, second language and mathematics in the programs
established by the Minister and be taking, concurrently with his or her vocational training, general education courses
in Secondary Cycle Two programs established by the Minister and required for admission to the program leading
to a DVS and for the awarding of a diploma**
* For the purposes of admitting students to a vocational training program, the Attestation of Equivalency for Secondary V Studies (AESS), a certificate
issued by the Ministère de l’Éducation et Enseignement supérieur to persons who successfully complete the Secondary Studies Equivalency Tests
(SSETs), and the General Education Diploma (GED) are recognized as equivalent to the Secondary School Diploma (SSD).
** This option may not be available in all vocational training centres or for all programs.
Admission to a program of study leading to an Attestation of Vocational Specialization (AVS)
(Reference: sections 13 and 14 of the Basic Vocational Training Regulation)
To be admitted to a program leading to an Attestation of Vocational Specialization (AVS), a person must:
• hold a Diploma of Vocational Studies (DVS) related to the trade or occupation corresponding to the program selected
or have been granted recognition of equivalent learning*
OR
• practise a trade or occupation related to the program
N.B.: There are no admission requirements for the program Starting a Business.
RECOGNITION OF ACQUIRED COMPETENCIES
The learning acquired by a person by means other than those provided for in the Basic school regulations

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
A full-time student enrolled in vocational training is eligible for student financial assistance under
the loans and bursaries program of the Ministère de l’Éducation et Enseignement supérieur.

Other assistance programs may meet the needs of beneficiaries of employment assistance or employment insurance.

The recognition of acquired competencies (RAC) in vocational
and technical training is a process that allows adults to be evaluated
and obtain official recognition for competencies acquired
on the job or through real-life experience.
